PROBLEM SOLVING

a)Based on different points of reference, there are three

different functions can be written:

1. y

-2 0 2
x

( 0, -0.5)

-1 ( 2, -1)

General Form :
ƒ(x) = -ax² – 0.5
(-1) = -a(2)² – 0.5
a = 0.125
Hence, ƒ(x) = -0.125x² – 0.5
2. y

0 2 4
x

( 2, -0.5)

-1

General Form :

ƒ(x) = -a (x – b)² + C
ƒ(x) = -a (x – 2)² – 0.5
1 = -a (0 – 2)² – 0.5
a = 0.125
Hence, ƒ(x) = - 0.125 (x + 2)² – 0.5
3. y

-4 -2 0
x

( -2,- 0.5)

-1

General Form :
ƒ(x) = -a (x + b)² + C
ƒ(x) = -a (x + 2)² – 0.5
- 1 = -a (0 + 2)² – 0.5
a = 0.125
Hence, ƒ(x) = -0.125 (x + 2)² – 0.5
b) The area to be painted :

-2 0 2
x

( 0, -0.5)

-1 ( 2, -1)
Y = -0.125 x² – 0.5

²
Area = ∫ - 0.25 χ² – 0.5 dx
²‫־‬
²
= - 0.125 χ³ – 0.5 χ
3
²‫־‬
= - 0.125(8) – 0.5 (2) – - 0.125(-8) – 0.5(-2)
3 3
= -1 – 1 – 1 +1
3 3

=-1–1-1 –1
3 3

= - 8 = - 2.667 = 2.667 meter²

4. FUTURE EXPLORATION

a) (i) The cost of concrete :

Structure 1 :

4m

0.5 m 1m

Area of surface = 2.667 m²

Volume of concrete

= 2.667 m² Χ 0.4 m
= 1.0668 m³
Cost of the concrete
= 1.0668 m³ Χ RM 840.00
= RM 895.44

Structure 2 :

4m

0.5 m
1m

Area of the surface

= 2 (0.5 + 1.2) = 3 m²
2
Volume of the concrete
= 3 m² X 0.4 m = 1.2 m²
Cost of the concrete
= 1.2 m³ X RM 840.00
= RM 1008.00

Structure 3 :

4m

0.5 m
1m

Area of the surface

(0.5 + 1)1.5
=2 + ( 1 x 0.5)
2

= 2.75 m²
Volume of the concrete
= 2.75 m² X 0.4 m = 1.1 m³
Cost of the concrete
= 1.1 m³ X RM 840.00
= RM 924.00

Structure 4 :

4m

0.5 m

2m

Area of the structure

=2 (0.5 + 1.1) + ( 2 x 0.5)

2

= 2.5 m²
Volume of the concrete
= 2.5 m² X 0.4 m = 1.00 m³
Cost of the concrete
= 1.00 m³ X RM 840.00
= RM 840.00
Structure 4 has the minimum cost (RM 840.00)

As the president of the Arts Club,I would like to choose

the structure 4 because it is simple and plain.I like the
shape and the cost also cheap and affordable then the
others.

b)

4m

0.5 m
k(m) Area to be painted (m²)
(correct to 4 decimal places)
0.00 3.00
0.25 2.94
0.50 2.88
0.75 2.81
2.00 2.50
2.25 2.44
2.50 2.38
2.75 2.31
3.00 2.25
3.25 2.19
3.50 2.13
3.75 2.06
4.00 2.00

(ii) It is find that whwn k increase, the value area

to be painted decrease.

But when k approach to 4,the value of area to be

painted approach to 2.
a) (ii) Which structure to be choosen ?

Structure Cost Comments/ shape

1 RM 895.00 Artistic and attractive

2 RM 1008.00 Too common and

geometrical
3 RM 924.00 Artistic but too much
vertices
4 RM 840.00 Simple and plain
b)Expression of the area (A) to be painted in terms of k

4–k
4m 2

0.5 m
1m A = 0.5 k

A2 =
( 0.5+1) . (4– k)
2 2
Area, A = A1 + 2 A2
= 0.5 k + 2(0.5 + 1) . (4 – k)
2 2
= 0.5 k + 1.5 (4 – k)
2
A = 3 – 0.25 k

Lim ( 3 – 0.25 k ) = 3 – 0.25 (4) = 2 m²

k 4

When k 4, the shape of the concrete becomes

a rectangle 4 m X 0.5 m.
2.OBJECTIVES

2.1 To form 3 different functions of the curve of the concrete

structure.

2.2 To find the area of the concrete structure to be painted.

2.3 To estimate the cost of concrete in difference structures.

2.4 Determine which structure has the minimum cost.

2.5 Determine the structure to be chosen based on cost and other

aspects.

2.6 To observe the relation between k and area to be painted.

2.7 To express the area to be painted, A in terms of k and the value of

A when k approaches the value of 4.

2.8 To predict the shape of A when k approaches the value of 4
