GRANDPARENTS TRIVIA

This past Sunday, September 9, 2012, was the 33rd annual National Grandparents Day. In
honor of the event and just for a little fun, weve rounded up 25 of the coolest, little-known
facts about these people that play such a huge role in shaping who we are: our
grandparents, and the little (or not so little!) ones they live to please: their grandchildren.
1. According to Grandparents.com, 72 percent of grandparents say they think being a
grandparent is the single most important and satisfying thing in their life. Note to
grandparents: And we think you do a pretty darn good job at it, too!
2. Grandparents are getting younger: The average age of a grandparent in the U.S. is
48. Most become grandparents in their forties (37 percent) and fifties (43 percent).
3. In 2010, 5.4 million children under the age of 18 lived with a grandparent
4. Todays grandparents are more active than ever! Nearly half (43 percent) exercise or
play sports, 28 percent volunteer regularly and 18 percent dance.
5. 75 percent of grandparents are online. Theres no question that seniors can be
reached on the Web!
6. More than half of grandparents (56 percent) share photos online. Hmmmwhat are
the chances theyre sharing photos of their fabulous grandchildren?
7. Almost half of grandparents (45 percent) are on the social networking scene. Anyone
have Grandma as a Facebook friend?
8. Ten percent of grandparents have a tattoo. Thats right, a tattoo. Can you imagine
the grandparents of a few decades ago with tattoos?
9. Six percent of grandparents have a blog. (This is one of our favorites, given that
were big fans of content marketing. We love to see the older generation embracing
the wonders of the Web!)
10. Grandparents are contributing to the care of their grandchildren in a big way.
Thirteen percent are primary caregivers for their grandchildren, and 72 percent take
care of their grandchildren on a regular basis.
11. Grandparents are big spenders. They control 75 percent of the wealth in the U.S.,
and theyre not afraid to use it, spending $52 billion each year on their
grandchildren.
12. 1.7 million grandparents are married, out of 56 million grandparents residing in the
U.S., according to About.com. Hey, the golden years dont mean you cant find love!

13. By the year 2015, nearly 60 percent of grandparents will be Baby Boomers.

Grandmas kitchen; 86 percent of grandparents bake cookies for their families.
20. More than half (55 percent) play video games with their grandkids.

PRIME NUMBER TRIVIA

The numerical digits we use today such as 1, 2 and 3 are based on the Hindu-Arabic numeral
system developed over 1000 years ago.

Different names for the number 0 include zero, nought, naught, nil, zilch and zip.

The smallest ten prime numbers are: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29.

2 and 5 are the only prime numbers that end with a 2 or a 5.

The golden ratio of approximately 1.618 between two quantities such as lengths often appears in
nature (tree branching, uncurling ferns, pine cone arrangements etc) and has been used
throughout history to create aesthetically pleasing designs and art works such as Leonardo da
Vincis Mona Lisa.

Fibonacci numbers are named after Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa (better known as
Fibonacci) who introduced them to Western Europe after they had earlier been described by
Indian mathematicians. They are related to the golden ratio and proceed in the following order: 0,
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, .... Can you see the pattern?

The number Pi (the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle) cant be expressed as a
fraction, making it an irrational number. It never repeats and never ends when written as a
decimal.

The name of the popular search engine Google came from a misspelling of the word googol,
which is a very large number (the number one followed by one hundred zeros to be exact).

A googolplex is the number 1 followed by a googol zeros, a number so ridiculously big that it
cant be written because there literally isn't enough room in the entire universe to fit it in!

You might have heard the word infinity before or seen its symbol that looks like the number 8
placed on its side. Infinity means a limitless quantity or something that goes on forever. While its
not really a number like 1, 2 or 3, infinity is often used in math as part of equations and formulas.
