From the reading for this week, on pages 40 52 (Academic Writing), go through all of the highlighted
and/or underlined terms within these pages and discuss how they will specifically be used in your second formal
essaythe Website Analysis Essay. Please list all of the terms on this sheet, providing the explanation of how
you will specifically use each of them following each listed term (also, please type this one).
These are the terms I will be using for my Website Analysis Essay on thefire.org:
1. Thesis: The thesis in my paper will provide a general idea of what the FIRE organization is all about.
Since the rest of my paper will evaluate their message deeply, my thesis on the other hand will only be a
summarization of the message that the FIRE organization is trying to convey through their website and
work, in one sentence.
2. Topic sentence: Each paragraph of my essay will have a topic sentence. As my goal of writing this essay
is merely to inform my audience about the fire organization then having a topic sentence that gives a
preview of what my paragraph will be about could help my audience have a better understanding of
what they are about to read. For example, if I am about to discuss a court case involving the FIRE org
then I will have my topic sentence include that.
3. IMRAD: Even though the IMRAD form of organization is mostly used for science related papers, I
would organize my Web analysis in a similar way since its also in a way, a research paper. The
introduction will introduce the audience of the fire.org and their message to clear out any questions they
might have about it, then come the methods that they use to convey their message whether its protesting,
fighting court cases and etc, also the results will talk about the progress and accomplishments of the
organization and finally a discussion about it.
4. Transitions: I will have effective transitions in my paper that will in some way connect every piece of
information to each other and also back to the main point/message of the organization. This way I can
make sure my essay does not look like a bunch of facts put together about some website.
5. Claims: Using the videos from the youtube channel of FIRE and other information I can gather from the
website and articles on the first amendment and FIRE I will make my claims.
6. Evidence: Since claims and evidence go hand in hand I will support my claims with evidence by citing
the authorities I get my examples and statistics from.
7. Counterarguments: Some universities might disagree with the message FIRE is conveying and since
my essay is strictly objective and informative I will take in consideration any counterarguments of
universities and through different court cases and mention those as well.
8. Define: In order to have a clarity in my essay, so the readers understand the website and the content in
the website better, Ill have to do some defining. For example, FIRE refers to foundation for individual
rights in education. I will need to refer and define the terms I use in the essay so the readers can have a
better understanding.
9. Context: Besides the topic sentences of my paragraphs I will always give the context of the website and
once I have given the general idea, then I will dig into a deeper understanding.
10. Document: Last but not least, my documentation will be in correct MLA format and to avoid any
accidental plagiarism Ill make sure that any words or any sort of idea/information I get from others, I
will cite it.
