Industrial Pumps

General
As an extension to its range of drives,
LEROY-SOMER offers users a range of
four large families of pumps which integrate
the most recent European standards and
respond to DOMESTIC, DRILLING and
INDUSTRIAL needs.

Single-stage surface pumps.

Multi-stage surface pumps.
Submersible pumps for 4" and 6" bore holes.
Pumps for public works applications.
For domestic requirements, refer to the
pumps catalogue ref. 91.

What you need

to know
Z+
Screen The flow rate is the quantity of water which
collects at the pump output in a given time.
This quantity is measured in cubic
metres/hour (m3/h) or in litres/minute (l/min).

WARNING :
Unlike flow rates, output pressures cannot
be calculated. For two sprinklers which
each need 1.5 bar simultaneously, the
output pressure will always be 1.5 bar.

The following table below gives load losses

according to the diameter of the pipe and
the flow rate.
Example :
Flow rate : 2 m3/h
Pipe diameter : 1" (26/34)
Pipe length : 50 m

LOAD LOSS
Any liquid carried inside a pipe is subject to
stresses and friction called "load loss". This
load loss is measured in metres of head of
water (MHW) and is associated with the
cross-section of the pipe, the flow rate and
the water temperature.
WARNING :
Load loss is a very important factor. It is
advisable to avoid using pipes which are
too long and which have a narrow diameter.
Note that scaling can occur in old pipes.
Choice of pipes
Use the following table to establish the size
of the pipe in relation to the flow rate.

For plastic pipes, multiply these values by a

coefficient of 0.7.
For right-angles, spring-loaded check valves,
foot valves and filters, calculate an additional 2
metres of pipe per accessory.

GSL : Geometric Suction Lift

This is the difference in level between
low water and the pump. It is expressed
in metres.
+ GDL : Geometric Discharge Lift
This is the difference in level between
the axis of the pump and the highest
point of distribution.
It is expressed in metres.

to know

EXAMPLE OF CALCULATION
(surface pump)
Required specifications :
- Flow rate : 2 m3/h
- output pressure : 1.3 bar = 13 m
Data :
GSL = 4 m ; SL = 7 m
GDL = 6 m ; DL = 60 m
Recommended pipe diameter : 1" 26/34
Load loss in the pipe per metre of
pipe :
90 mm = 0.09 m

Lowest
level of
water

Manometric suction lift

(MSL) :
- GSL + suction load loss
- 4 m + (0.09 x 7) = 4.63 m
Manometric discharge lift
(MDL) :
- GDL + discharge load loss
+ output pressure
- 6 m + (0.09 x 60) + 13 = 24.40 m
Total manometric lift (TML) :
- MSL + MDL
- 4.63 + 24.40 = 29 m
Therefore, a pump delivering a flow rate of
2 m3/h is needed for a total manometric lift
(TML) of 29 MHW.

+ P : Output pressure

To calculate the manometric lift, all values

must be measured in metres of head water
(MHW).
When doing this, the following conversion
must be taken into account :
1 bar = 10 metres of head water
WARNING :
Always check that the capacity of the
suction pump is greater than the MSL.
Note : MSL (manometric suction lift) =
GSL (geometric suction lift) + Pa (load loss
in the suction pipe).

SELECTION RECOMMENDATIONS
The curves and the tables indicate the
operating range of electropumps.

Nominal operating point of MIH 2-4 INDUS pumps (choose a

usage point close to this figure)

It is always advisible:
- not to use the pumps at their minimum
flow rate. This could lead to the motor
becoming overheated.
- to align the usage point with the nominal
operating point of the electropump : the
value in grey in the table corresponds to the
characteristics of the pump at its maximum
efficiency.
