In God We Trust

By Michelle Hohmeier

In God We Trust. Four small words that have such great meaning. And yet, we all
take these words for granted. If we only took them to heart, where would our
country be? The Founders took them very seriously. And even though politicians
today will say this country was not founded on Christian principles, the evidence to
support America as a Christian nation is all around us.

It’s printed on our currency, at least for now. In God We Trust. It’s said in our
Pledge of Allegiance. One Nation Under God. The Lord and His followers are
mentioned and depicted on many of our national buildings in Washington, as well as
many state capitals. His words are engraved on our most precious monuments.

The United States Supreme Court, who ruled public buildings cannot display the Ten
Commandments and restricted prayer in schools, themselves pray before each
session with “God save the United States and this honorable court”. As they
have repeatedly taken God from the American people by their judgments, the
people should be soliciting a response to the question of their honorability. As this
same group of intelligent and so-called just people continue to make laws contrary
to God’s law, one must ask how they consider themselves qualified to sit in those
chairs with God’s servant of the law, Moses, carved above them?

Prior to the last fifty years, the Supreme Court of the United States has long held a
tradition of asking for the Lord’s guidance in their endeavors. When the first
Supreme Court was formed and held their first session, their first order of business
was to celebrate communion together and then they prayed for four hours.

The first Supreme Court Justice, John Jay, stated on October 12, 1816 referring to
the election of our representatives,

“Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers and it is the
duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation, to select
and prefer Christians for their rulers.”

For those in positions of authority in our country today to say we were not founded
on Christian principles is as blasphemous as denying Jesus Christ is God.

Even later in our history, Chief Justice Joseph Story, who served on the Court from
1811 to 1845 proclaimed.

“It yet remains a problem to be solved in human affairs whether any free
government can be permanent where the public worship of God and the
support of religion constitute no part of the policy or duty of the state in
any assignable shape.”

These men knew all too well, a government left alone to its own interpretation of
law will not survive long.

There are many other public buildings and monuments with references to scripture
and God. The Liberty Bell has Lev. 25:10 inscribed in it, which says,

Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the
land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you …

There is a portrait of Moses hanging in the United States Congress and in the
Library of Congress are statues of Moses and the Apostle Paul each with biblical
references below them. Micah 6:8,

“He has told you, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of
you, but to do justice to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God”

And Psalm 19:1,

“The heavens are telling of the glory of God and their expanse is declaring
the work of His hands”

The Lincoln Memorial holds this verse,

“Judgments of the Lord are righteous.”

And we cannot forget the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,

"Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God"

So how is it that our government today is telling the American people we have no
right to worship God publically or even in some cases to speak His name. It’s really
not that surprising when students aren’t even allowed to wear t-shirts bearing our
own flag so as not to offend. Or they are forbidden to say the Pledge of Allegiance in
school.

What happened in recent decades to push our country so far from where it has
come? It’s an absolute mockery to the men who died so that we could celebrate our
freedoms.

The ACLU and other such organizations are pressing hard to abolish all religion from
our country. Since the majority of the American people proclaim to be Christians, it
is time for those Christians to voice their outrage against such organizations, for
those liberal groups, who are contradictory to the fiber of this country and its
beliefs. Do the Christians of this country want the shame and dishonor to continue
and become the law of the land? That is doubtful. Why is it that we allow this to
happen? Simply because we have been told over and over again that the
Declaration and Constitution are antiquated documents that no longer have any
meaning.

Resist what you’ve been told. The people forcing this line of reasoning upon us are
simply a minority trying to coerce evil upon our land. These documents are not
useless as they would have you believe. In fact, recently as the Reagan
administration, God was revered in this nation. In fact, on October 4, 1982,
Congress as a whole (House and Senate) made a resolution as follows:

Whereas the Bible, the word of God, has made a unique contribution in
shaping the United States as a distinctive and blessed nation of people,
whereas biblical teachings inspired concepts of civil government that are
contained in our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the
United States, whereas that renewing our knowledge of and faith in God
through Holy Scriptures can strengthen us as a nation and a people, now
therefore be it resolved, that the President is authorized and requested to
designate 1983 as a National Year of the Bible in recognition of both the
formative influence the Bible has been for our nation and our national
need for study and applying the teachings of the Holy Scriptures.

In the mid 1850’s, seventy years after the Constitution was established and most
signers were gone, Congress published their understanding of the Establishment
Clause, or First Amendment.

Had the people during the Revolution had a suspicion of any attempt to
war against Christianity, that revolution would have been strangled in its
cradle … the universal sentiment was that Christianity should be
encouraged, but not any one denomination. Any attempt to level and
discard all religion would have been viewed with universal indignation …
In this age, there can be no substitute for Christianity. That, in its general
principles, is the great conservative element on which we must rely for the
purity and permanence of free institution. That was the religion of the
Founders of the Republic and they expected it to remain the religion of
their decendents.

Again, later in 1863, the United States Senate resolved that,

Devoutly recognizing the supreme authority and just government of

Almighty God in all the affairs of men and nations and sincerely believing
that no people can prosper without His favor …

How much more plain can it be that we, the United States of America, are truly a
Christian nation? And we should not be bullied by our government or other
organizations into believing otherwise.
There are many quotes from those in our distant past and our more recent past,
who understand the importance of preserving our Christian heritage. Although,
President Obama and those in Congress do not seem to comprehend that concept
or care. As a Christian nation, we need to liberate ourselves and our churches from
this oppressive, atheistic, socialist regime.

We were once revered by other nations. Today we are reviled. And it is not because
we are a Christian nation. It is because we have lost our way.

While speaking to the United Nations, Cyrus Vance asked Charles Malik what was
wrong with the United States? Malik’s response was, “You have taken Jesus
Christ out of your universities.” Amazing to think those outside our country can
clearly see what is causing the demise of our once great nation. Why is it those
inside our own government can’t see what they are doing?

Alexis de Tocqueville visited the United States in 1831 and was amazed at the new
nation. His observations were that of a God fearing country of well educated people.
He even commented,

“The Americans combine the notion of Christianity and liberty so

intimately in their minds that it is impossible to make them conceive one
without the other.”

Let us return to that time. Let us pray that God makes it clear to us how dependent
our liberty and freedom is on Christianity. Let’s pray the words of Micah are not true
for our land as he says,

There’s not a decent person in sight. Right living humans are extinct.
They’re all out for one another’s blood, animals preying on each other.
They’ve become experts in evil. Corrupt leaders demand bribes. The
powerful rich make sure they get what they want. The best and brightest
are thistles. The top of the line is crabgrass … Don’t trust your neighbor,
don’t confide in your friend. Watch your words, even with your spouse.
Neighborhoods and families are falling to pieces. The closer they are –
sons, daughters, in-laws – the worse they can be. Your own family is the
enemy. Micah 7:2-6 (Message)

Frightening words. Micah was speaking of the end times just before the return of
Christ, but these same words could so easily be applied to our lives, right now, in
this place we call America. I pray the light of the Lord Jesus Christ shine upon us,
but fear without some effort on our part, He will let the United States fall as brutally
as Rome.

Will the Christian Americans stand together and oust those in Congress that
continue to malign and blaspheme the Lord? It is time to proclaim the power and
Glory of God. Wake up America, for soon your freedoms may be gone.
Remember the words of David from Psalm 56:3-4.

When I am afraid I will put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise. In
God I have put my trust. I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to
me?
