oure probably accustomed to either giving or receiving some type

of annual performance review. Its an opportunity to evaluate what
youve done well and where you can get better, and no matter how
good you are at your job, theres always room for improvement.
The Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport Show in
Indianapolis is like my annual review. Its an opportunity to see and talk to
the whole industry, and to get direct feedback from the people this magazine
is designed to help: You. Its the one time of year when everyone is together,
and I really appreciate hearing your thoughts on the magazine and the
industry as a whole.
This will be my sixth trip to Indy. The first time, I was fresh to Cleaner
and was just taking it all in. In the subsequent years as Ive grown to know

and understand the industry better, Ive been able to get more out of the show.
The more I learn, the more interesting it becomes.
This year will be a little different. COLE Publishings role with the show
has changed. As most of you know, the show is in new hands, but Cleaner and
the other COLE publications will still be well represented.
In years past, I was responsible for the daily program and much of my
time was consumed with getting that off to press each day. For me personally,
the good news is I wont be on a daily deadline this year. Instead, Ill be
focused on seeing whats new and talking to more of you.
I can remember how impressed I was with the size and scope of the show
floor on my first trip to Indy, but at this point I realize its not the trucks and
equipment that make it so impressive. Its the people. Im looking forward to
talking to as many of you as possible, getting your feedback, listening to the
issues youre facing, and hearing your stories. Of course, Im excited to check
out all the new tools, trucks and equipment, too, but its really your stories
Im interested in.
We wont be right up front running it all like in years past, but well be
available throughout the show in the COLE Publishing booth (#2371) out on
the exhibit floor. Our whole editorial staff will be on site, ready to answer your
questions, and more importantly, hear your stories.
If you havent already, take another look at the January issue of Cleaner
and check out the WWETT Product Preview. Itll give you a look at some of
the new tools and equipment you can expect to see on the floor. The level of
technology and innovation is remarkable.
I hope youre gearing up for Indy and are excited to take in everything
the show has to offer. Im looking forward to it and I hope to see you there.
Have a great time at the show, and enjoy this months issue. C

BETTER BUSINESS

Build an Abundance Mentality

Promoting teamwork and recognizing a job well done will motivate employees and help grow your business
By Richard J. Bryan

ave you ever worked with people who had a scarcity mentality? In
other words, they believed that if someone else was successful,
there was less opportunity for them. Their whole belief system was
one of winning at all costs, at the expense of friends, colleagues,
customers and even family members. They had a win/lose outlook on
business and life in general.
Typically, this sort of approach is less successful in the long run because
it is not conducive to building long-term relationships. Other people
are turned off by this compulsive will to win, regardless of who loses in
the process.
It is far more productive if, as a manager or small-business owner, you
can promote an abundance mentality in the workplace. This helps you
and others find creative solutions in problem-solving, and it is far more
motivational for employees, ultimately leading to business growth. How do
you do this? Try adopting these four simple steps in your business:

Become a coach and mentor

Dont be so quick to criticize members of your staff if they get something
wrong or fail at a particular task; instead view it as a coaching opportunity.
If you can become more of a coach and mentor rather than a task-oriented
leader, you create an opportunity to grow your people and let them learn
from their mistakes. This also makes the team of people working for you
more self-sufficient and stronger, enabling you to focus on other strategic
priorities.
Seek creative solutions
Encourage your employees to come up with creative solutions to issues.
This will empower them to discover new and better ways of doing things that
can directly impact the bottom line.
For example, Peter, a longtime owner of a car dealership, was amazed
at how much money he saved when his employees offered to paint the
white lines that marked out the 500
car spaces on the site. Normally,
this simple task would have cost
thousands of dollars each year by
employing outside contractors to
paint the lines every six months.
However, with his own staff doing
the job, not only was it completed at
half the cost, but they also did a far
better job because they took more
pride in the task at hand.
Encourage risk-taking
Persuade your team to take
calculated risks and learn from
their mistakes. By doing this you
send a signal that you want them
to think bigger and help grow the
business rather than just sticking
with the status quo. This can deliver
results and create a culture in which
looking for new and better ways of
doing things is not only encouraged
but rewarded.
Remember that the first attempt
at doing this may not result in the
best solution, but this approach

14

Cleaner February 2017

does encourage creative thinking rather than worrying about being right
and playing it safe. Allow time for both you and the team to get accustomed
to this approach.

If you can become more of a coach and mentor

rather than a task-oriented leader, you create
an opportunity to grow your people and
let them learn from their mistakes.
Give praise and recognition
It is amazing how something as simple as giving regular, positive
feedback can be so effective as a strategy for growing your business. What is
even more amazing is how few organizations do this well.
Bob, the general manager for a successful retail store, had more than 50
salespeople working for him. He maintained that his team was motivated by
winning the Salesperson of the Month award, not because of the financial
bonus they received, but because of the peer recognition and praise from
their manager and colleagues. It is a huge motivator for our team, he
said. So ask yourself: What ways can you find to give genuine praise and
recognition to your employees?
The bottom line
A CEO of a multibillion-dollar software company put it best when asked
about the many things his organization had achieved during the past 10
years. He was quick to praise his management team and said, We take it as
a given that you need to have the skills and the experience to come and work
as part of our team. Then we look to hire those who have a positive outlook
and an attitude of abundance. This is what helped us to grow revenues and
profits even during tough times.
If you can lead in a way that encourages collaboration, you will build
an abundance mentality that promotes teamwork and what is best for
your company and its customers. More creative ways of doing things are
discovered and a win/win philosophy becomes the norm. C

AllJetVac vacuums water from the sewer line, puts it through a five-step
filtering process and then re-uses the same water to jet sewer lines. Its

COLORADO CONTRACTORS INVESTMENT IN NEW

TECHNOLOGY AND MARKETS DRIVES EXPONENTIAL GROWTH

26

Cleaner February 2017

Embracing new, relatively unknown technology is a

high-risk, high-reward proposition for many contractors.
Using that technology to bid on a job thats exponentially
bigger than anything a contractor has ever
attempted before ups the ante even more.
That was the situation Larry and Chrystalla Larson faced in 2009, and as they learned, nothing ventured truly means nothing gained. By taking a large but calculated risk, the owners of C&L
Water Solutions in Littleton, Colorado, parlayed an investment in UV-cured fiberglass pipe lining
technology into a game-changing bid on a huge project that drastically altered the then-struggling
companys fortunes.
The project centered on lining roughly 20,000 feet of sewer mains and service lines at the
Denver Federal Center, a sprawling facility close to downtown Denver. The companys bid was $1.4
million quite a step for a company that had never submitted a bid worth more than $100,000,
says Chris Larson, the couples son and vice president of operations.
My parents felt we were biting off more than we could chew, Larson recalls. But I felt very
strongly that we had to bid on it. We were spinning our tires at the time and close to bankruptcy
after taking out $1 million in loans to invest in equipment. There was a lot on the line.
Larson was confident the company could handle the job because of its array of services, which
at the time included lining, excavating and pipe bursting. We could do everything required within
the scope of the contract, and they preferred to work with one contractor instead of four or five,
he explains. So we won the contract on the basis of our flexibility and having all that technology
in our back pocket.
It eventually turned into about a $2.3 million contract, he says of the two-year-long project. We made way more money in that two years than wed made in many more years before
combined. And all that additional revenue bought us time to grow the marketplace (for UV-cured
fiberglass lining). It was a game-changer.

STARTING OUT SMALL

Bidding on such a large project wasnt even on the Larsons radar when they founded C&L
Backhoe Excavating in 1979. The couple started out with just a Ford rubber-tire backhoe, using
their basement as an office and their garage for a warehouse. In 1985, they moved the business
to a 3,000-square-foot building. And in 2000, they moved into a newly built 19,000-square-foot
building, a reflection of the companys steady growth.
A focus on a market niche performing small sewer and water repairs for local municipalities spurred the companys growth. By the mid-2000s, the Larsons had built up a customer base
that included 40-some municipalities in the Denver metropolitan area.

They literally got in on the ground floor, says Larson, who helped
his parents at work while growing up and joined the company in 2007 after
graduating from the University of Denver with a degree in real estate and
construction management. His brother, Jason, vice president of technology,
came on board in 2009. No one else was doing that kind of work, he recalls.
Everyone else was focused on the construction boom. At the time, a lot of
the surrounding Denver area was being developed.
A request from a longtime customer in 2006 jump-started the companys
move toward service diversification. The municipality urged the Larsons to
offer trenchless pipe rehabilitation, because its engineers felt it was a superior
method for sewer and waterline repairs. After much research, Larry Larson
determined that a fiberglass CIPP liner made by Saertex GmbH Co., combined with UV-curing technology from ProKASRO Mechatronik GmbH, was
the best technological route to take.
My dad wanted to do something no one else was doing: differentiating
himself in the marketplace, Larson says. And very few companies in the
U.S. were lining sewer mains this way. In fact, we were one of the first ProKASRO customers in the United States.
Why opt for a UV-curing technology and fiberglass liners? For starters,
a fiberglass liner is thinner than the more commonly used felt liner. As such,
it maximizes pipes total hydraulic capacity. In addition, the lining can be
inspected before it cures because the so-called light train curing system

(picture a chain of small,

an inspection camera
that enables installers to
spot flaws before theyre
too difficult and costly to
eliminate.
With a felt liner,
you dont know what you
Chris Larson
have until you inspect it
after its cured, Larson
explains. Theres more leeway with UV-curing technology. On one job, for
example, the inspection camera showed a small Hot Wheels truck under the
liner that a kid mustve flushed down a toilet, after we started lining the pipe.
But we were able to deflate the liner and remove it before finishing the job.
UNEXPECTED OBSTACLE
But the companys plan hit a snag: Using felt liners for pipe lining was
dramatically cheaper than UV methods. And since most public works projects use a low-bid procurement process, fiberglass lining was a tough sell,
Larson says.

<< LEFT: Allen Hamm (foreground) and

Tom Spiegel insert a fiberglass reinforced
pipe liner into a sewer line.
>> RIGHT: A ProKASRO UV light train lit
up in its storage sleeve in the lining truck.
The light train cures the fiberglass liner.

But it wasnt impossible. Convincing municipalities to consider using a more expensive pipe lining
method required doing a lot of demonstrations, or
lunch-and-learns, as Larson calls them. It was a
foreign concept to a lot of people, so we had to prove
the technology was viable and get engineers to understand the advantages so they would write it into
their bid parameters, he says.
Landing the Denver Federal Center job was instrumental to the companys success. For starters,
the companys revenue has more than quintupled
since then, from roughly $3 million to $15 million in
gross revenue. Over the years, that influx of cash enabled the company to invest in additional equipment,
which it used to enter new markets. Furthermore, it
allowed the Larsons to figure out a more profitable
pricing structure.
We didnt have any historical data to help us
out there, Larson points out. But eventually we
started drumming up business with other municipalities and built up some momentum. If not for that
big job, I dont know where wed be today.

30

Cleaner February 2017

Aided by the revenue boost, the company branched out into other service offerings, including grouting, lateral lining (using an LMK Technologies felt-lining system),
manhole rehabilitation, pipe bursting and
sliplining. Thats been our market niche
projects where municipalities prefer to use
one contractor that can do everything, Larson says. We bid on projects that need two
or three of our services and when we do that,
its hard to compete against us.
The company also carved out a niche for
taking high-risk, high-reward jobs that most
contractors dont want to handle. As an example, Larson cites one job that involved relining a culvert located under a highway. The
only problem: One end of the culvert jutted
out of a steep slope. That required workers to
rappel about 30 feet down the side of the cliff
and improvise a bit to get the liner through
the culvert.
Were not a very big company, but we
get paid well because we know how to do
high-risk projects, he notes. Plus, were
vertically integrated, which allows us to be
more price competitive. We have our hand
in a lot of technology jars, which is the main
reason we rebranded the company by naming
it C&L Water Solutions.

IT ISNT PERSONAL, ITS BUSINESS

The Larson family parents Larry and Chrystalla and sons Chris and
Jason used to openly debate and dispute ideas and strategies proposed
during monthly managers meetings at C&L Water Solutions in Littleton,
Colorado. And in the heat of battle, things often got a little, well, personal.
The biggest problem that arises while working with family members
is that theres no line between business and family, says Chris Larson,
who in a year or so will join Jason in running the company their parents
founded in 1979. For whatever reasons, its easier to forget there should
be respect and mutual appreciation.
I sometimes find myself disagreeing with my brother before the
third word about an idea or proposal comes out of his mouth, Chris adds
wryly. Its so much easier to disagree with family members faster than you
would with, say, an employee. In short, Chris says its a challenge to keep
business impersonal, set aside sibling rivalries, and deal with disputes that
arise when old and new ideas clash.
To avoid damaging public conflicts, the Larsons developed a simple but
strategic work-around: Meet once a month in a setting outside the company
and hash things out ahead of time, before the monthly staff meetings. So,
instead of settling things out in the open, they try to work through issues
among themselves first, as systematically and dispassionately as possible.
We do things like go through next months goals and work schedule,
and talk about purchasing decisions, he explains. That way, everyone

is on the same page when the managers meeting comes

around.
A lot of the disagreements stem from the fact that
Larry and Chrystalla are more conservative than Chris
and Jason when it comes to business issues such as
growth, equipment purchases and job bids. While the parents are fairly
comfortable with the way the business runs now, the sons want to invest
in new software and equipment that will drive increased productivity and
steer the company toward new markets, for example.
They get really nervous when they see their 37-year investment in
this business handled aggressively, he notes. Thats where we usually
butt heads.
But as time goes on, Chris says he actually finds that its easier to see
his parents point of view. I guess that as my brother and I get more mature
maybe even more like our parents and as we handle more of the
business itself and see what it really means to go into debt for $100,000
to buy a new piece of equipment, it gives us a greater appreciation for their
side of things.
Whats the best advice Chris can give other families that work
together? Never take each other for granted. Always treat each other with
respect. Dont handle differences in front of other employees. And when
things get heated, take a break and talk later when cooler heads can prevail.
Theres nothing wrong with disagreeing, he points out. We
encourage debate. People are passionate about their opinions and we
want that. But families are more prone to attack each other personally
because we know how to press each others buttons. So its important to
remain respectful.

EQUIPMENT MATTERS
The companys services eventually fit into three distinct divisions: service and repair work, which includes leak
detection and pipeline inspections; excavations for pipeline
repairs; and trenchless pipeline rehabilitation. And as services expanded, so did the companys fleet of equipment.
On the companys service side, equipment includes
two sound leak detection devices (leak correlators) made
by SubSurface Locators, two SuperFreeze pipe-freezing
systems made by RIDGID, one RIDGID SeeSnake inspection camera, a line locator made by Radiodetection, holiday
detectors made by Tinker & Rasor, and an adhesion tester
made by Defelsko Posi-Tester (for testing how well lining
systems adhere to their substrate).

WERE NOT A VERY BIG

COMPANY, BUT WE GET PAID
WELL BECAUSE WE KNOW HOW
TO DO HIGH-RISK PROJECTS.
PLUS, WERE VERTICALLY
INTEGRATED, WHICH ALLOWS
US TO BE MORE PRICE
COMPETITIVE.
Chris Larson

In the pipe lining end of the business, the company

relies on four CCTV trucks equipped with camera systems
built by Aries Industries; four winches made by TT Technologies; an Aries grout truck for lateral and mainline grouting;
two LMK lateral pipelining systems; four lateral reinstatement systems made by ProKASRO and Schwalm Robotic; two US Jetting 4018
trailer jetters (4,000 psi at 18 gpm); one Mongoose trailer jetter made by Sewer Equipment (4,000 psi at 18 gpm); three ProKASRO-equipped UV-curing
trucks; six 8-inch Godwin, a Xylem brand pumps, used primarily for sewer
bypass work; two pipe bursting systems built by TT Technologies; air compressors made by Ingersoll Rand; and two Clemco Industries sand-blasting pods.
For excavating, the company owns five mini-excavators and track excavators made by Link-Belt (a brand owned by LBX Co.) Caterpillar and Volvo; five
rubber-tire Caterpillar backhoes; three Bobcat skid-steers; two Volvo front-end
loaders; five Mack, Kenworth and Peterbilt dump trucks with dump bodies
made by Ox Bodies Inc.; two forklifts made by Caterpillar and Kalmar; six Load
King flatbed and low-boy trailers; and two SpoilVac trailer-mounted vac units
made by VACMASTERS.
Looking ahead, a succession plan calls for Larson and his brother to become majority owners of the company in about a year or so, with their parents
still maintaining an ownership stake. Larson says hes both excited and nervous
about the change, and that he and Jason are looking forward to slower, more
controlled growth after the exponential growth of the last seven years.
Consistency is the name of the game, he says. We were fortunate
enough to achieve explosive growth. It came along totally unplanned a textbook case of opportunity meeting preparation. But if we grow slower now and
can better control it, Im OK with that.
Does Larson feel pressure to maintain the familys business legacy? Not really, he says. We have a long-term plan in place. A key driver for us is maintaining our core values: Providing high-quality service and putting our people and
customers first. We dont need 15 core values or principles. We just focus on
our people keeping them safe while at the same time keeping our clients
happy and providing the highest-quality work possible. C

MONEY MANAGER

9 Ways to Cut Costs and

Raise Your Bottom Line

Erik Gunn is a magazine writer

and editor in Racine, Wisconsin.

Ask your team of financial experts for money-saving advice to improve profitability
By Erik Gunn

he best get-rich-quick schemes drop the last of those three words.

If you want to add to your bottom line, dont go for windfalls see
where you can nip and tuck your budget here and there.
Were just a little bit into the new year, but its not too late to
wipe the slate and figure out how you can trim overhead costs that eat away
at your monthly profits. So as a present to yourself and your bank account,
we offer a Top 9 list of ways you can save money without hurting your core
business.
1. Talk to your accountant. If that person doesnt know where youre
leaking money, get a new accountant. (And if you dont have an accountant at
all or at the very least, a tax preparer get one. Youre the owner and the
manager, not the accountant. The peace of mind that comes with knowing
the books are straight and youre right with the IRS is worth the expense.)
2. Review your insurance policies. Especially if you havent looked at
them in a while. If your agent is independent, not tied to a particular insurance
company, that person can be a great source for ideas about trimming your
premium costs. One caution: Be very candid
and clear about

your real needs. Theres no point in crippling your business if disaster strikes
just because you thought you could live with that extra-high deductible
and it turns out you really cant.
3. Call your lawyer. We think of attorneys as inevitably high-priced,
but they dont have to be. Discuss alternative fee arrangements. What can
she or he do to help you economize reasonably without giving you cut-rate
service? More than you might think. You could even consider bartering
your attorney gets the home septic tank pumped and you get X hours of legal
consultation. (Keep good records, though.)
4. Shop around, shop around. This tip is two for the price of one.
For your business line of credit or equipment loans. A new bank might give
you a break for your line of business. But look carefully at the terms
youre offered, and talk to other business owners already banking
there about the level of service theyre getting. Incidentally, if you dont
bank at a credit union, see if theres one in your area. The terms and
the service are often better at these locally owned, cooperatively run
businesses.
For your credit cards. The advice here differs depending on whether
you carry a balance or pay in full every month, but either way a little
comparison can go a long way. Do you pay in full every month? Focus
on the annual fee and choose a card where its low or nonexistent. Or
do you tend to carry over a balance on your card from one month to
the next? Then watch the interest rates and hunt for the lowest you can
find. And as for rewards programs make sure theyre rewards youll
actually use: Always read the fine print.
5. Time your banking. This can work in two directions, depending on
your specific action.
You want your deposits to go in as early in the day as possible: If your
account pays interest youll get just a little bit more. More banks now enable
you to make deposits by smartphone through a special app. Just take a
picture of the check with your phone and in a few keystrokes the deposit
is credited to you. From the envelope to your account in minutes. How
convenient is that?
On the other hand, if youve got a bank loan on your office property or
a piece of equipment, time the payment toward the end of the billing cycle.
Thats because, unlike credit cards, bank loan interest doesnt accrue day by
day during the month. So you can have longer use of the funds or can even
earn a little interest on them. Be sure to pay on time, though late fees or
penalties would wipe out any savings.

6. Quit the Paper Chase. Paper filling it out, filing it, storing it
might not be the biggest part of your business, but can you make it an even
smaller amount?
Digital storage on hard drives gets cheaper all the time. The same goes
for SSD, solid-state drives, which are smaller and less prone to failure. And
online storage, should you decide to go that route, is easier and cheaper all the
time. Theres Google Drive, Dropbox, and services from Amazon, Microsoft
and others with free or low-cost storage in the cloud on an internet server
rather than taking up space in your office. But be sure you are confident
that the option you choose is as secure as possible.
Consider equipping your service drivers with iPads or other tablets.
Those can do what paper does (fill out a work order, say) but faster. And
they can create invoices instantly. (If you take credit cards, you can then get
paid almost instantly.)
7. Pay attention to your advertising. Always try to evaluate effectiveness
against cost when it comes to paying for publicity.
Take a look at the work youve handled over the last three months
where did it come from? A lot of small service businesses ask how customers
learned about them you could even put a question like that on the invoice.
While youre at it, which social media do you use and how well do
they deliver customers to your door or website? Scope out your competitors,
too where are they advertising? Can you determine whether its helping
them or not? Can you use a similar strategy if it is? Some publicity is always
necessary, but the best way to seek it is always changing. Keep studying your
preferred strategy to make sure its still working.
8. Hold the phone. Whether landline or mobile, telephone service
is another potential source for savings. If youre paying your employees
cellphone bills because theyre using them for work in the field, see if you
can get a group discount for using the same provider. The effectiveness of this
tactic depends on what coverage is like in your particular area, but its always
worth checking.
9. Join the clubs. Whether its through a national, regional or local trade
association, you may qualify for discounts on a wide range of necessary costs
cellphone service, insurance or other employee benefit programs.
Your local chamber of commerce can similarly benefit you with discount
deals on services of all kinds. They also offer opportunities for crosspromotion. Yes, any of these groups has an annual fee, so youll need to take
that into consideration. It could still cost you less to join than the value you
get in discounts or the goodwill and referrals that might come your way.
GET TO WORK
So thats just one list of nine ways to save. Some might not work for you,
but others probably will and bit by bit, those small savings can add up to
real money. C

The Past and Future

of Vacuum Excavation
Technology has advanced from the gold rush to underground construction
By Jason Proctor

acuum excavation has long been an essential practice on job

sites across the globe. Every underground construction operator,
large or small, seeks to keep crews safe and projects profitable.
In a modern, competitive industry, finding the right machine to
balance these needs can be difficult.
From damage prevention to fluid cleanup on horizontal directional
drilling projects, vacuum excavation saves operators time and helps improve
safety. Understanding the transformative history of these machines will
arm todays contractors with an appreciation for the technology and provide
insight into how theyre transforming todays underground construction
industry.

44

UNDERGROUND ORIGINS
The history of vacuum excavation stems from the use of hydroexcavation
as far back as the late 1800s, when pressurized water was used for mining
purposes in the U.S. Breaking up soil using pressurized water created a cleaner
and safer way to dig. From there, hydroexcavation expanded as a method used
on underground construction sites throughout most of Canada and the U.S.
Beyond hydroexcavation, the modern vac machine can be traced back to
cleanup duties and sewer applications beginning in the 1950s. As technology
progressed and new innovations took hold, vacuum trucks became a fixture
on HDD sites where they proved effective in cleaning up drilling slurry and
fluids exposed at the entry and exit pits on these HDD projects. This method

over the past couple decades as more clients seek a safer alternative to traditional excavation techniques.

aided operators by improving their visibility of buried utilities and providing an

efficient method of fluid disposal.
After their introduction, vacuum excavators found continued heavy
usage in Canada through the 1990s and into the present. The industry began
to grow significantly in the late 1990s as several equipment manufacturers
began entering the market with both truck- and
trailer-mounted models to fit a growing demand
for hydroexcavation in a variety of locations across
North America.

Additionally, the machines evolved to fit smaller job site needs as

well. Compact units featuring smaller tanks improved ease-of-use and
maneuverability in tight work areas while other, larger models kept operators
productive on bigger, more time-intensive projects.
Beyond mechanical updates, today air excavation has found a new

INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS
At the turn of the 21st century, the demand
for vacuum excavation led to new designs focused
on improving performance on a variety of job sites.
Reduced noise, for example, supported the excavators
growing use in residential neighborhood projects.
Innovations within nozzle technology focus on
increasing digging capability while reducing damage
to underground utilities. Larger tank capacities kept
machines on job sites longer and provided greater
hauling capacity, improving contractor profitability.
For example, some municipal operators improved time
savings by nearly 50 percent with larger tank sizes.

Hydroexcavation machines have evolved to fit smaller job site needs. Compact units

prominence. For years, many contractors dismissed the effectiveness of air

excavation. Due to the increased time and cost savings from not having to
dispose of spoils, the productivity and efficiency of air excavation has proved
significant for many operators. Unlike hydroexcavation, which requires access
to water, air excavation keeps machines running and operators profitable
without costly trips to acquire water or dispose of spoils.
And, just as the applications for vacuum excavation have evolved, so have
the safety regulations. While there is not a consistent set of regulations for all
states or countries today, several regulations are focused on responsible digging
practices. In the U.S., mechanical excavation is prohibited within a safe zone
on an underground construction job site, creating an opportunity for the use of
vacuum excavation for damage prevention.
Vacuum excavators have been used for damage prevention since the
1980s, however, this role for todays vacuum excavator took off around 2010
as efforts were being made to avoid damaging existing underground utilities.
This concentrated effort is spearheaded by the Common Ground Alliance,
which reported 363,176 underground events in the U.S. and Canada in 2015.
New innovations and machine designs continue to aid vacuum excavation
contractors in revealing hidden utilities and preventing damage to utilities on
the job.
TRENDS AND PREDICTIONS
The market for vacuum excavation is expanding in all directions. Every
customer has a unique need thanks to the versatility of these machines and
advancements in newer technology. As more vacuum excavators are used
for damage prevention and utility location around the U.S., market demand
is accelerating the need for these machines. The Pipeline and Hazardous
Materials Safety Administration found that since 2005, excavation damage is
the leading cause of pipeline accidents. This has created additional incentives
to use vacuum excavators for utility locating of all sizes.
Today, manufacturers are focused on enhancing operator safety in their
machine designs. Operating a vacuum excavator has long required physical
demands, including a need to connect and hold various hoses throughout a job.
Recent developments are focused on improved ergonomic designs to help keep
operators safe and comfortable on the job site.
In addition to operator safety improvements, damage prevention is
increasingly critical in areas around the country. Underground construction
operators will continue to rely on vacuum excavators to pothole and safely
locate hidden utilities, and to help minimize cross bores. And as fiber build-out
and utility expansion continues, vacuum excavators will play an integral role in
uncovering, digging and cleaning up these jobs. C

is no reason for fatalities or injuries in trench accidents.
Sometimes accidents just happen, but there are those
times when people take shortcuts or even worse, ignore safety. For
company owners, there are good reasons to consider the business
ramifications of following safety rules. Here are three recent
examples, all announced in October, of companies that ended up
paying large fines; two of the cases involve no injuries.
Two workers were killed and another seriously injured in May
in Boise, Idaho, when a trench about 11 feet deep caved in. The
contractor had provided no cave-in protection or even a ladder for
the employees working in the trench doing underground utility

STRONG REPUTATION
Hedge is adamant about their work ethic and their
reputation. As he explains to his employees, they are not
trying to be aggressive with marketing because they want to be able to fulfill
the needs of existing customers and maintain a workload that keeps them
busy but still allows them to provide quality service. They are not the cheapest
guys in town, but they stand behind every job they do and hold themselves to
exceptional standards.
Can I go out and get more work by pushing? Yes, he says. But we have
to be able to back it up properly.
Ive seen companies get into trouble if they think that with $250,000
worth of new equipment they will go out and be successful. Weve had the
experience that builds integrity. We got our gray hair by learning the business
and taking our share of problems along the way. Its not an easy business. Weve
had our parcel of issues and weve worked through them and fixed them, never
leaving a customer in the lurch. If we ever broke something, we fixed it, and we
have learned over the years.

hen Rick Hedge graduated from Florida

State University in 1998, his gift was a
trailer jetter. There was no question as
to where he would put his skills and
education to work.
Hedges father, Dick, purchased a
small drain cleaning company in Fort Myers, Florida, in
1982. The company was named Trenchless Solutions.
As we grew throughout south Florida and began
incorporating the newer technology into our services,
we wanted to provide our growing expertise to other
plumbing companies as well as to the residential market
and small commercial such as mobile home parks,
apartment buildings and restaurants in our area, says
the younger Hedge, who has been president of the
company since 2008.
Trenchless Solutions became The Plumbers
Plumber, and the refocused company was at the
forefront of pipe bursting in 1998. The company was
one of the first customers trained at the TRIC Tools
facility in Alameda, California. In 2004, the company
moved into relining.
With their years of experience, The Plumbers
Plumber is perfectly suited to fill a trenchless rehabilitation
niche within the plumbing industry, assisting companies
that want to fully serve their customer base without
having the responsibility at their own door.
At least 40 percent of the incoming calls come
from referrals sent their way by other plumbing firms
who simply ask that they take care of the customer.
They do not typically subcontract, and the company has
established a good relationship with other plumbers by
assuring them they are not out to steal business or step
on any toes. They are careful not to solicit any further
business after referral jobs, and their aboveboard process
has served them very well.

Rick Hedge
If a potential customer is looking for a bargain price, they are informed
that the job is priced to provide quality. They are also assured that if there is a
problem down the line, Plumbers Plumber will come back and fix the issue.
Hedge, who in addition to two degrees from Florida State University and a
Florida State Certified Plumbing License, is a State Certified General Contractor
and a Florida State Certified Home Inspector.
The company occasionally takes on municipal work, and Hedge was
recently asked to serve as a manager/superintendent for another firm doing a
major relining job because of his reputation and experience.
JOBS AND SOLUTIONS
When I go out to a job, I have a toolbox of all those technologies at my
disposal, so I dont go in and say, We will reline this, he says. It is not always
in the best interest of the customer. I always ask, what is the best interest of
this customer? What do we want to accomplish and what is the problem? Often
we will go out where the referring plumber will tell us what the customer needs,
but we go out and find he doesnt need to spend that much money on the

58

job. Would a complete job be good? Yes. Would a simpler

solution help solve an immediate problem? Sometimes it
will. We want to treat the customer as we would a family
member or a good friend.
Hedge says in some situations he recommends pipe
bursting over relining with small-diameter pipes because it
doesnt restrict the inside diameter, which in his opinion
can reduce functionality.
The solution in each case, however, is what will best
suit the customer, as well as consideration of the layout and
conditions they find.
Sixty percent of the companys business comes from
trenchless work, and the balance in jetting, drain cleaning

and some basic plumbing. Plumbing calls run the gamut

from changing a faucet to installing a water heater and even
re-piping a house if necessary. But their target is trenchless.
Taking these other calls has helped keep the lights on, but
what they really want are the dirty, tough jobs.
Much of their work is handled from inside the building. Sometimes they will cut a small hole in the floor of
a bathroom in a home to access the line, or they can go
through the toilet.
When we first started relining I thought the customer would be opposed to opening a small hole in the house
to access the line, as we dont have basements in homes
here, he says. As I got older and more experienced, we

THE RIGHT TOOLS

The company operates with a fleet of Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota trucks.
When a job calls for excavation, the company relies on a Komatsu PC 27.
Plumbers Plumber now relies on LMK Technologies and Perma-Liner
systems, and Source One Environmentals PipePatch for smaller CIPP repairs.
The company uses cameras from RIDGID, and they have a PipeHunter
Jet Eye trailer jetter, 4,000 psi/18-25 gpm.

Hedge says every time they start a job, he recalls the cleanliness and
neatness of training demonstrations, but its never quite that perfect out in
the field. He does, however, strive to maintain those standards in every job.
We have learned the hard way that inaccurately measuring anything
on a relining job is not a good thing, he says. We triple check each other.
If I triple check someone, they should not be offended. We have a checklist
and report sheets. When you mess up on one of these jobs it is 99 percent
human error.
The variables in the job include measuring the types of epoxy you
are using, the size of the pipe you are dealing with the elbows, the Y
connections coming into the pipe, the ground conditions, the weather all
must be addressed in order to have success.
With a small but manageable crew, Hedge says they will do one relining
or pipe bursting job at a time, because they want it to be right.
Dont get behind and do not rush anything.

HANDS-ON
Hedge is a hands-on guy who is right there in the trenches with his
technicians, and he demands perfection. Technicians are trained to set up
jobs, but before the work begins, Hedge comes in and makes sure everything
is perfect.

THE TEAM
Like many of his counterparts, Hedge says finding qualified technicians
who meet all his criteria is a challenge.
In order to find a qualified technician you have to pay them very well,
and in order to do that you have to charge the customer accordingly, have the

says he wants someone who is
mechanically inclined, knows how to
pay attention, use his hands and knows
how to use a wrench someone with
a positive attitude who isnt afraid to get
dirty. He says its important that he be
able to trust his technicians, because
they are given a lot of responsibility.
I want to treat them as I want to
be treated, and I trust them, he says.
In some cases I may overly trust, but
this is a relationship. We are partners.
When we are doing a job I get into the
hole with them, just like my dad did.
We are building something important.
Sometimes things dont go as you
would want them to go, but my goal is
to lead by example, and sometimes, as
the head of the company, you have to
be the boss. C

MONEY MACHINES

A Cable for Every Clog

Multiple drain cleaning machines ensure contractor can handle anything clogged lines can dish out
By Ken Wysocky

money
machines

hen buying equipment, Mark Vice

the owner of Fayette Drain
& Sewer in Fayette, Alabama
relies on a very simple but effective
philosophy: Buy only machines that youre sure can
turn a profit.
I dont buy anything unless its going to make
me money, says Vice, whos been cleaning drains
and providing plumbing service in and around
Fayette since he founded his company in 2000. And
I always make sure I have enough work to support
that piece of equipment.
So far, thats been the case for Vice, whos
heavily invested in drain cleaning machines made
by Duracable Manufacturing. The company owns
nine Duracable machines; each of his three service
trucks carry three different-size machines: a DM55
(for 3- to 6-inch-diameter pipes), a DM30 (for 2- to
3-inch pipes) and a DM10 (1 1/4- to 2-inch pipes).
Most of his work centers on clogged sewer laterals
and plugged drainlines in restaurants and residential
homes, he says.
Of course, contractors cant make money or
keep generating repeat business with breakdownprone equipment. Thats exactly why Vice invests in
Duracable machines, which he first started using in
1996 while working for a drain cleaning franchise.
In fact, he says he owns a 30-year-old Duracable
machine thats still going strong.
I really dont know about other drain machines
Fayette Drain & Sewer lead service technician Justin Simmons (left) and service technician David Beard show off
the full complement of Duracable drain cleaning machines that each of the companys service vans carry.
because Ive always run Duracables, says Vice,
whose company employs 12 people and also offers
septic tank pumping and septic system installation
services. But I think theyre the best for durability. They almost never break

down. If something does go wrong, its usually just a small electrical problem.
MACHINES: Nine Duracable drain cleaning machines
They dont require a ton of maintenance, either, he adds. We just use
FUNCTION: Cleaning commercial and residential drainlines
them every day and they keep holding up.
FEATURES: Open-cage reels, lightweight and wide wheels for increased
maneuverability and mobility, telescoping handle

not only hurt profitability and productivity, they also make a contractor look
unprofessional, Vice says.

66

Cleaner February 2017

The machines durability became more and more important as the

company grew, because Vice was no longer able to oversee every job and
help out with problems. You need more reliable equipment when other
guys are working without you around, he explains. My guys are trained
plumbers, not electrical repairmen theyre not
equipped to fix the machines. So now its even more
important than ever that we use reliable machines.
Technicians want to know that when they flip the
switch, the machine is going to turn on and be ready
to go to work.

When youre cutting roots, you

need something strong that wont
slip around if the cable gets in a
bind. When you get into tough
spots with these machines, they
keep the rpms high enough to
get you through it.
Mark Vice
In addition, Vice says the compact machines are
designed for portability and maneuverability, yet are
heavy enough to provide the stability required when
a cable hangs up in a drain. When youre cutting
roots, you need something strong that wont slip
around if the cable gets in a bind, he notes. When
you get into tough spots with these machines, they
keep the rpms high enough to get you through it.
Two things Vice avoids are closed-face reels
(except on smaller machines) and the automatic
cable-feed option. While he admits a closed reel
minimizes on-the-job mess, Vice also points out that
they can retain water in the bottom, which can lead
to rusty cables. With an open-cage reel, most of the
water has dripped off by the time a technician loads
it into his service vehicle.
Manual feed gives a technician a better feel
for whats happening inside the pipe. Vice says an
experienced drain cleaner can tell if hes run into
roots or mud in the bottom of a broken pipe; he
compares it to the way a veteran angler knows what
hes got on the line by the way a fishing pole bends.
I can even tell what kind of pipe Im running into
PVC versus Orangeburg, for example, he says. I
think an automatic feeder slows you down, and you
cant feel or judge as well whats going on because its
taking the stress of the cable for you.

The Duracable machines also generate a great return on investment,

typically paying for themselves within months of purchase. Even at $3,000
per machine, Vice points out that at $95 per service call, for example, it
doesnt take long to recoup the up-front investment.

Why buy three different-size machines? Vice believes too many

inexperienced drain cleaners think they can get away with buying one
medium-size machine and using it for handling everything from sinks drains
to sewer pipes. But what they end up with is a machine thats too big for sink
drains and too small for unclogging sewer lines. Its essential to use the
proper snake for the proper drain size or youre not going to do a very efficient
job, he explains.
Vice says the Duracable machines contribute substantially to his
companys profitability.
Our name is Fayette Drain & Sewer. Were a service company, and a
high percentage of our service calls stem from clogged drains, he says. The
drain cleaning business is great for generating profits because you can show
up on jobs and not incur any expenses for repair parts. All you need is a
trained technician and a truck.
And durable, reliable drain cleaning machines. C

WATER & WASTEWATER EQUIPMENT, TREATMENT & TRANSPORT SHOW

FEB. 22-25, 2017 | Indiana Convention Center, Indianapolis, Indiana

SPOTLIGHT

Rausch Gets Portable

New system packs truck-mounted features in a portable package
By Kyle Rogers

ausch USA has traditionally focused on high-end truck-mounted

inspection systems. The 2016 Water & Wastewater Equipment,
Treatment & Transport Show marked the launch of a new product
line for the company: compact portable units. Rausch USA
showcased its new Mobile Pro inspection system and was prepared to take
orders from any interested customers.
This has been designed to target customers we didnt really have a
product for in the past, says Jeff Rager, field applications manager for Rausch
USA. We kept most of the same features we have in our larger truck-mounted
systems, but put it all in a more compact and portable design.

crawler (6- to 78-inch-diameter pipe). The control unit mounts to the Cubix
300 motorized cable drum, which comes with 1,000 feet of 0.303-inch
cable. It has an LCD display with status and distance counter and is fully
synchronized with the camera and crawler. Handles on both sides of the
cable drum allow for mobility along with the units relatively light weight of
110 pounds, including the 1,000 feet of cable.
Its easily maneuverable for one or two people, and can be installed in
basically any type of platform, Rager says.
For example, it can be mounted in a variety of situations, in a trailer, on
UTVs, or moved among other vehicles like pickups or vans even when

A lot of our customers are

excited to see it. I was talking to
one of our current customers
who has a truck unit, and he

Jeff Rager
space is at a premium because of other equipment.
The cable drum unit is 16.75 square inches and
18.9 inches high.
Its made for portability if thats what the
customer is looking for, says Rager. A lot of our
customers are excited to see it. I was talking to
one of our current customers who has a truck
unit, and he was saying it was something he could
use when he has to do easement jobs.
Along with the more compact portable
Adam Baker, left, vice president of sales for Rausch USA, shows WWETT Show attendees the companys new Mobile Pro

to Rausch USAs high-end systems.
This is for smaller municipalities and
contractors who may have the need for inspections but dont have the budget
The Mobile Pro control unit has a built-in 12-inch LCD monitor and
to go with full-blown systems, Rager says. It opens the door for the smaller
digital video recorder. The crawler and camera are controlled with two
market. Everybody really liked the products we had, but we essentially just
multifunction joysticks. Its designed for mainline inspection not laterals
had the top of the line. We only offered a higher premium product and we
but that mainline functionality covers a wide pipe diameter range. The
were missing out because we couldnt fit everyones budget. The Mobile Pro
system can be paired with the companys KS 60 DB camera and C 100
is going to fit more budgets, but it also still has the features and functionality

of our other products that have worked so well. What are sometimes add-ons
for a portable unit come standard with the Mobile Pro.
Rager highlights the 1,000 feet of cable as an example.
Thats a lot of cable to include in a 16-square-inch unit, he says.
The WWETT Show served as an appropriate venue to debut the Mobile
Pro, Rager says, as the new portable unit could not only be showcased to a
large number of people, but also be a gateway to introducing them to the
companys other offerings.
Thats what our dealer network is really excited about, Rager says. The
Mobile Pro is a product they can show to people and open the door should
someone want something bigger. It at least shows them the capabilities of the
crawler and camera. 717/709-1005; www.rauschusa.com. C

PIPELOGIX GIS MODULE

BILLING SOFTWARE
INVOICE2GO
Invoice2go is a mobile app that allows business owners
and contractors to send professional invoices on the spot,
accept credit and debit card payments, track unpaid invoices,
and view business performance at a glance from a smartphone,
tablet or computer. By bringing the entire invoicing process
seamlessly into one app, it helps business owners avoid the
manual process of chasing, collecting and banking checks to
keep cash flow in order. www.invoice2go.com.

RITAM TECHNOLOGIES SUMMIT

SERVICE REMINDERS
Summit Service Reminders from
Ritam Technologies can help keep a business in front of customers with reminder
and thank-you cards, email and text-message reminders, as well as 24/48-hour text notices. This minimizes scheduling snafus and helps keep businesses front and center with customers.
800/662-8471; www.ritam.com.

GPS
CUES GRANITENET
GraniteNet infrastructure inspection and
decision support software from CUES can be
used in the field on tablets or via a web browser
to review and analyze inspections. It uses the
cloud for media storage while enabling simple,
precise data collection with integrated GIS
mapping and GPS, helping contractors lower operating costs and increase
efficiency across departments. 800/327-7791; www.cuesinc.com.

ENVIROSIGHT ROVVER X
LASER PROFILER
Attaching in seconds to the ROVVER
X inspection crawler, the laser profiler accessory
from Envirosight helps geometrically profile the
inside of buried pipelines. Captured profile data
is readily analyzed to verify proper pipe installation, plan relining projects,
determine remaining pipe life, monitor erosion and corrosion, quantify
defects, and analyze partial collapses. The accessory attaches without tools

82

Cleaner February 2017

and requires no electrical connections. A hinged mounting system makes it

easy to deploy in tight spaces, and twin carbon fiber arms ensure extra rigidity.
It can profile lines up to 18 inches in diameter when mounted directly to the
ROVVER X crawler. Larger lines are addressed by mounting the accessory to
a skid that is pulled by the crawler. Profile data can be transferred seamlessly
to WinCan inspection software, the laser module of which can trend diameter
and deformation frame by frame to generate a solid model, ovality graph
or color plot. It operates up to 16 hours on a single AA battery. 866/9368476; www.envirosight.com.

With the addition of the PipeLogix

GIS Module added to ArcMap, supervisors
can view all surveys performed on an
asset. The toolbar filters survey data in
the master database to highlight pipes
with selected conditions, grades or score
values, allowing the user to link to the video or survey. Survey conditions can
be exported to a shape file or a geodatabase feature class. When opened in
ArcMap, this layer displays the condition along the length of pipe. Selecting
the condition will link to the video and jump to the correct footage for viewing.
Seeing the problem and its location can make it easier to schedule repair
and cleaning crews. It is compatible with ArcGIS 9.3 through 10.3. 866/2993150; www.pipelogix.com.

RIDGIDTRAX
RIDGIDtrax is an app that enables
underground utility mapping in real time. Simply
connect the app via an Android or iOS device with
Bluetooth to a SeekTech SR-24 line locator and
RIDGIDtrax will display GPS position and depth of
the target utility. Users can use the app to identify
the type of utility and display multiple utilities on
the same map. The finished map can be saved and
viewed inside the app or exported to a .KMZ file for
use with Google Earth. 800/769-7743; www.ridgid.com.

ROUTING
POINT OF RENTAL SOFTWARE
MOBILE WORKFORCE
Mobile WorkForce from Point of
Rental Software offers smart features to
increase route efficiency, automate service
schedules, streamline communication, and
eliminate wasted time and fuel. GPS integration allows route, delivery and
service information to be uploaded wirelessly, storing the complete history in
the contract in real time. Visual tracking of vehicles keeps dispatchers informed
at all times and prevents misuse of assets. It is designed to allow drivers to take
pictures of the equipment on site, record the customers signature, clock in and
out, send out delivery and pickup notifications, access dispatch routes and
more, in real time without requiring full access to the system. 800/944-7368;

PRODUCT NEWS

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT
N700 Series reels from Hannay offer
variety of customization options
By Craig Mandli
A sewer and drain cleaning technician never knows what hell
be up against in an emergency situation, so its important that his
equipment be versatile enough to handle whatever comes his way.
Narrow N700 Series hose reels from Hannay Reels are designed
for lubrication, assembly, washdown and more, handling a large range
of applications.
The N700 is definitely our most versatile reel system, says
Jennifer Wing, marketing manager for Hannay Reels. It is terrific as
a cleanup tool after work on sewer lines, or for almost any washdown
situation from grease traps to septic and holding tanks.
The spring rewind wheels, which handle 1/4- to 1/2-inch-I.D.
hose, feature both a narrow frame and compact mounting base. The
units handle standard pressures to 3,000 psi, but are available up to
10,000 psi by special order.
The great thing about the N700 is the level of customization,
says Wing. It can be applied to either high- or low-pressure
applications, and is designed according to customer-defined specs.
The customization options allow it to be mounted in several different
places on the truck.
Temperatures can range from -60 to 250 degrees F on base
models, or up to 400 degrees F as an option, making it a fit for hightemperature washing applications. A non-sparking ratchet assembly

with a declutching arbor prevents

damage during reverse winding.
The reel also has a four-way roller
assembly.
Its spring rewind means that
you dont need power to use it,
says Wing. That feature adds even
more versatility to the unit.
Hannays N Series has been
available for 30 years, but now offers more customization options.
Wing says the reels have long been top sellers for the company, due in
large part to those options, along with their durability.
These reels hold up to a lot of demand, she says. They get a
lot of jarring when mounted to the truck, but theyre built strong to
withstand that. The spring rewind is extra-durable for a lot of winding
and rewinding.
In the end, according to Wing, the units versatility and durability
sells it. They have great internals, and the idea that they are built to
spec is huge, she says. You arent designing your truck or changing
the way you operate to suit your reel. Instead, the reel is built especially
for you. 877/467-3357; www.hannay.com.

HI-VAC HYDROEXCAVATOR

The X-8 hydroexcavator from Hi-Vac Corporation has been redesigned

for increased power and capacity. A new debris tank with a dished front head
allows operators to legally load up to 8 cubic yards, helping avoid overweight
tickets. The total payload capacity is 24,000 pounds and there is an onboard
scale located at the operator station. The unit also features a 4,000 cfm, 27-inch
Hg blower and a cyclone separator capable of 10-micron filtration. 800/7522400; www.x-vac.com.

GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY SYSTEMS UTILITYSCAN PRO

The UtilityScan Pro ground-penetrating radar from Geophysical Survey

Systems is designed for identifying and marking the depth of subsurface
utilities. The unit detects metallic and nonmetallic targets including storage
tanks and PVC pipes. Features include real-time data collection, multiple depth
calculation methods, GPS integration and non-destructive testing configurations.
It is available in several cart and antenna configurations. 800/524-3011;

ISUZU CLASS 6 MEDIUM-DUTY TRUCK

PIPEHUNTER RED DAWG NOZZLE

STONEAGE WIRELESS TRACKED STRIKER

The 2018 Isuzu FTR is designed for high efficiency in the medium-duty
truck market. The Class 6 truck has a 25,950-pound GVWR and Dana axles
with capacities of 12,000 pounds in front and 19,000 pounds in the rear. The
FTR will have wheelbase lengths from 152 to 248 inches, accommodating
bodies from 14 to 30 feet long. The turbocharged Isuzu 5.2L engine provides
215 hp and 520 ft-lbs and the Allison six-speed automatic transmission
features power take-off capability. 877/478-9828; www.isuzucv.com.

The Red Dawg Low-Pro pipe cleaning nozzle from PipeHunter is available
in 1/2- and 3/4-inch sizes. The unit features three forward-facing jets and six
rear-facing jets, which are all replaceable. The simple design of the nozzle helps
prevent hang-ups and allows it to enter lateral clean-outs with ease. 800/3731318; www.pipehunter.com.

The Wireless Tracked Striker from StoneAge is an automated

shotgunning system for hands-free surface preparation. The system enables
safe, precise shotgun cleaning on blast pads, walkways and platforms, inside
vessels, boilers and other difficult-to-access locations. The modular design
adapts to a wide range of applications with plug-and-play accessories. And
the remotely steerable tracked base allows for continuous cleaning without
needing to reposition. 866/795-1586; www.stoneagetools.com. C
