Understanding Mapping: First Draft
Writing is different to each individual and to each writer. In my
opinion writing is a way to portray thoughts and emotions into a visual
form that orders can decode and interpret through their own means
and understanding. It is a past time of conveying an individuals voice
to the masses. For my writing 225 course I was tasked with reading a
article and dissecting the article in order to find how the author of the
article defines writing by looking at the semantic aspect, biographic
aspect, affinity aspect, and the choral aspect.
After reading Charles Bazermans Writing Expresses and
Shapes Meaning to be Reconstructed by the reader , I grasped that by
understanding writing readers can access thinking that leads to free
writing, planning, mapping and that these build a foundation for
understanding more complex subjects. For the semantic aspect of
mapping I chose four words that were used ten or more times. These
words were share, write, mean, and express. The word share was used
ten times in the present and past tense forms. The word write was
used thirteen times in the verb, past and present tense form. Express
was used thirteen times in the present and past tense forms. The last

word I decided to map was mean which was used fifteen times in
various forms. Looking at these words I can understand why these
words were constantly repeated since the writer was trying to explain
the importance of writing to the reader.
After the semantic aspect I looked the Bibliographic factor of
mapping. My article was hard to find any bibliographic info on since the
article was so short and part of a collection of articles.. However, the
author did reference other articles such as Text is an Object Outside
of Ones Self that can be improved and developed, Writing is informed
by Prior Experience, Revision is Central on Developing Writing, and
Metacognition is Not Cognition. Unfortunately I was not given the
names of the authors of these articles so I had to make do with just the
titles.
For the affinity-based portion of my mapping I depended on the
Internet after reading reviews on some of Bazermans work I found out
that he is a world-renowned author when it comes to the subject of
writing. He has collaborated with writers such as David R Russell for
Landmark Essays on Writing across the curriculum, Paul A Prior
What writing does and how it does it, As well as releasing A
Reference Guide to writing across the curriculum through Parlor Press.
The affinity aspect of the paper and Charles Bazermans previous
works are of importance because they prove that he is not unfamiliar

to writing. He shows that he has experience collaborating with other

writers to talk about writing.
For the Choral aspect that revolves around happenings of that
time I chose aspects that I found significant such as the Death of
famous Blues artist B.B. King, the release of Kendrick Lamars critically
acclaimed album To Pimp A Butterfly. Lastly but not the least the
heart wrenching death of Jon Snow in Game of Thrones.
