MANUAL 750-01 V.1.6

WARNING... The left side of the DW750 main board carries 120 vac.
Always unplug unit before touching this area.
The DW750 is shipped to you fully assembled will all options installed. Upon receipt,
check the package for shipping damage and report any to your carrier.
The DW750 is shipped with the enclosure set up for desk or bench use. In this position
the support bracket can be moved to the up position for comfortable viewing angle on a
bench or desk or can be folded down to allow the indicator to lay flat. If theft security is
desired the bracket can be removed from the DW750,
mounted permanently to the flat surface using the wall mounting holes, and the indicator
remounted to the bracket.

For wall mounting the DW750, the bracket can be relocated to allow the enclosure to sit
flush on the wall. Simply remove the 2 screws which hold the mounting bracket to the
enclosure body, remove the bracket and reverse it so that the mounting holes in the
bracket protrude above the back of the enclosure, and replace the screws. The assembled
indicator can now be mounted securely to the wall.
To connect the load cell to the DW750, begin by making sure that the unit is
UNPLUGGED. Remove the front plate by un-screwing the four side screws which hold
the front plate to the enclosure body.
WARNING...be careful of the connector between the keyboard and the enclosure
body. Do not pull the front plate straight off. Instead, carefully pivot the front plate off
as if a hinge existed on the front bottom edge.

-3-

Feed the load cell cable through the strain relief and connect it to the terminal block as
shown below. The cable connections are also written on the printed circuit board for
reference.
DW750 EXTERNAL SENSE JUMPERS
If external sensing is to be used for long cable runs, remove the jumpers J4 and J5. The
DW750 is configured at the factory for no external sensing. (J4 and J5 are jumpered
together.)
NOTE: A jumper can be stored by placing it on either one of the associated pins
without shorting the two pins together. This keeps the jumper readily available if the
jumpers are required in the future.

OPERATION
Begin operation by plugging the DW750 power cord into a suitable AC outlet. A
GOOD, SAFE, GROUNDED, CLEAN, 3 PRONG ac power plug is required. For the
safety of the operator and the equipment, it is very important that the indicator be
properly grounded. The DW750 is equipped with EMI, RFI and surge protection, but in
areas with frequent lightning activity additional protection should be provided.
When the DW750 is plugged in it will perform a display check and a series of built in self
tests. The display will read "888888" and all annunciator lamps will light. This display
will hold briefly to allow the operator time to visually verify all display segments.
After completion of the internal self tests the display will read "SYS", "tESt", "good". If
the test locates an error, the DW750 will display an error message. (See DW750 error
messages for message list).
If the DW750 is powered up with jumper J1 in parameter lock position (see "parameter
setup" ), the unit will display all decimal points and wait for the operator to press the
ZERO key to begin operation. In the parameter lock mode,
the indicator will always zero the scale on power up, so be sure the scale is empty.
The DW750 will now display the GROSS weight.

-4-

KEYBOARD FUNCTIONS

The GROSS/NET key is used to toggle the indicator between gross and net weight
modes.
Simply press the GROSS/NET key to toggle between weight modes. In order to display
a net weight, the indicator must have a tare weight in memory. This key is also used for
piece counting. See the "Piece Count Operation" section for details on counting parts.
The TARE/RECALL key is used to display the current scale tare weight. The tare weight
will display as long as pressure is applied to the key.
The ZERO key is used to reset the empty scale reading back to zero. The indicator will
wait for motion to clear before zeroing the weight. During parameter set-up, the ZERO
key is used to select from the various options for each parameter (see "Parameter Set-up"
section for details).
The TARE key is used for auto-tare or keyboard-entered tare. For auto-tare operation,
place an empty container on the scale platform and press the TARE key. The indicator
switches to net weight mode, stores the tare weight, and displays a reading of zero.
For a keyboard-entered tare, enter the tare weight on the numeric keypad and press the
TARE key. The entered tare will automatically be rounded to the nearest scale
graduation and the net weight will display. The entered tare weight is stored in the
indicators memory as the current tare weight.
The lb/kg key is used to switch weight units between pounds and kilograms. Pressing this
key will automatically convert stored tare, accumulated weights, and setpoints to the
appropriate pound or kilogram values.
The PRINT key is used to output scale information to a printer or to a computer. During
parameter set-up, the PRINT key is used to select the displayed value and to continue on
to the next parameter (see "Parameter Set-up" section for details).
The ID key is used to enter or review ID numbers. See the section on "ID/Accumulation
Operation" for details on using the key for this function. During
parameter set-up, the ID key is used as a "reset" or "exit" key (see "Parameter Set-up"
section for details).
The ACCUM key is used for net weight accumulation under a selected ID. See section
on "ID/Accumulation Operation" for details on using this key.

-5-

The SET 1 key is used to enter or review setpoint #1. See the section on "Setpoint

PARAMETER SETUP
If the DW750 is sealed with the parameter set-up jumper set in the parameter lock mode
(jumper J1 pins 1 to 2), the DW750 will not allow any parameters to be changed. To
modify parameters:
a. The calibration seals must be broken.
b. The J1 jumper unlocked (pins 2 to 3).
NOTE: Always disconnect power before making a jumper change.
Before entering parameter set-up, first make sure that the indicator is displaying net weight, gross weight, or piece count. Press "8", "6", "2", "4",
followed by the PRINT key on the DW750 keypad. The DW750 will
display the first parameter and its current setting.
The parameters are stored in non-volatile memory. If ac power is disconnected or lost,
the parameter settings will be re-loaded upon power-up. The following keys are use to
set/change parameter settings:
ZERO - This key is used to toggle between various choices available for each
parameter.
PRINT -This key is used to save the selection chosen. Also, current parameter
selections may be reviewed by pressing the PRINT key only.
ID-This key is used to "exit" the parameter set-up mode. The DW750 will
automatically exit the mode when all parameters have been set or reviewed. If the operator wishes to exit without stepping through all the
parameters, he may exit at any time by pressing the ID key. If the ID key is
pressed before a parameter has been saved by pressing the PRINT key, any new
change will not be saved in memory.
lb/kg- This key is used when building the custom ticket format. Press the lb/
kg key to reset LN(LiNe), COL(COLumn), or LF(Line Feed) to 0.

PARAMETER EXPLANATION
Fine Span Digital Adjust
If a small calibration span error is found (due to load cell drift or calibration error), this
parameter is used to adjust the calibration span without performing a complete recalibration. By entering a value other than zero for this parameter, the Full Scale Span is
changed by the number of graduations entered.
Example: if a 2000 lb base is off by 1 count at 1000 lbs (1/2 full scale), the full scale
adjustment required is 2 graduations. If more than 2 graduations (full scale) adjustment
are required, complete re-calibration is recommended. If this is not possible, larger
adjustments can be made by repeating the procedure the required number of times. For
example, if 3 1/2 full scale graduations of adjustments are required, simply enter
parameter setup 2 times, using adjustments of 2, and 1.5 .
NOTE: When using Fine Span digital adjust, be sure that the error noted is SPAN error.
Inaccurate test weights, zero shift, or platform problems may appear as span error.
Correcting for these types of errors with Fine Span digital adjust can actually induce
larger errors.
Zero trACking.
Zero tracking is used to automatically zero the scale periodically. This procedure
compensates for the zero drift found in most bases. The weight is auto-zeroed
anytime the weight value is within the entered number of graduations from zero.
A value of .6 graduations is recommended for most applications, while 1 and 3
graduations are used for truck, livestock, and other applications. Setting the value to 0
disables zero tracking. The time between each auto-zero reading can be set to 1 or 2
seconds using the tdEL parameter.
Zero tracking dELay.
This parameter sets the time between each auto-zero when zero tracking is enabled. Use
1 sec for normal use. The 2 second setting is used for special applications such as a slow
speed fill operation.
Motion bAnd Width.
The value of the motion band parameter sets the amount of change in the weight value
which will cause motion to activate. The value is set in fractions of a graduation. Use .4
graduations for normal use.
In addition to lighting the motion annunciator; zero, print, and tare all require motion to
clear before the operation is completed. If the DW750 is used in an application where a
lot of vibration is expected, such as a livestock scale, a larger value of motion band width
may be needed. The "tightest" value is .2 graduations while 0 disables motion detection
entirely.

- 10 -

digital Averaging.
Digital averaging is used to compensate for mechanical vibration, electrical noise, and
unstable weight. The value entered is the number of consecutive weight readings which
are averaged continuously before the weight is displayed.
A larger value will cause a more stable weight reading (the display will be less sensitive).
A smaller value will allow the weight reading to settle quicker. The
standard configuration for Digital Averaging is 4 readings. This value stabilizes the
weight reading with negligible effect on the settling time.

CALIBRATION
KEYBOARD CALIBRATION PROCEDURE
When connecting the DW750 to a load cell for the first time, the settings of the gain
jumper and zero pots must be initialized.
If the mV/V rating of the scale being used is known, set the gain (J6) jumper inside the
DW750 to select the mV/V output closest to the scale mV/V output. To calculate the
output of a multiple load cell base use the following formula:
Scale
(load rating of the scale) x (mV/V output of each cell)
mV/V = ---------------------------------------------------------------------output
(number of load cells) x (load rating of each cell)
If the Scale mV/V output is centered between 2 gain jumper settings, choose the higher
value setting. If the mV/V rating of the scale is unknown, set the jumper
for 3 mV/V(no jumper).
To initialize the zero pot:
a. Turn the zero pot CLOCKWISE 20 TURNS.
b. Then return the zero pot 10 TURNS COUNTER CLOCKWISE
If the scale is being re-calibrated to the same base, the gain jumper and zero pot settings
should remain adjusted (within tolerances) from the previous scale calibration. No
additional adjustments (zero pot or gain jumper) will be needed to complete the
calibration procedure.
If the DW750 is sealed with the calibration jumper set in the calibration lock mode
(jumper J1 pins 1 to 2), the DW750 will not allow the operator to enter parameter setup.
To enter parameter setup and calibrate the scale:
a. The calibration seals must be broken.
b. The J1 jumper unlocked (pins 2 to 3).
c. The unit re-calibrated.
After calibration is complete, the calibration jumper J1 must be set to short pin 1 to pin 2
and the DW750 must be recertified and re-sealed to conform with NTEP standards.
The DW750 and load cell base must be allowed to warm up for at least 15 minutes prior
to calibration to assure accurate results. Connect the load cell as described in the

- 12 -

"Installation" section, put the DW750 into gross weight mode, and allow the unit to idle
for 15 minutes.
Enter parameter setup mode. (see "Parameter Setup" section for instructions on entering
Parameter Setup Mode ). Set the values for Scale Capacity and graduation size. If the
indicator is to be used as an NTEP approved instrument, set the graduation size for
10,000 counts maximum. If the DW750 is calibrated at greater then 10,000 counts and
then the J1 jumper moved to the lock (legal for trade) position, the graduation size will
default to 10,000 counts. Press PRINT key until the indicator displays "CAL no"
(calibration) parameter.
Press ZERO key until the indicator displays "CALyES". Press the PRINT key to start the
calibration procedure.
If calibration was selected, the display will flash "CLEAr SCALE". The operator should
remove all load from the scale whenever a "CLEAr SCALE" message is
displayed. When scale is empty, press the PRINT key.
The display will read "StEP 1". This message tells the operator that the DW750 has
entered the first step of the keyboard calibration procedure. No response is
required of the operator untill the next message appears.
NOTE: Version 1.2 replacement of older eprom will require parameter modification but
not recalibration.
After approximately 30 seconds, the display will read either "Z ___" or "CAL Lb". If the
"Z ___" message appears, the Zero pot must be adjusted. Carefully remove the front
cover of the DW750 to expose the main circuit board. Turn the Zero pot until the
displayed value reads zero ("Z 0" or very close). Press the PRINT key again to continue.
The display will again read "StEP 1" while the indicator verifies the first step of the
keyboard calibration function.
WARNING: Be very careful whenever operating the DW750 with the front cover off.
On the left hand side of the main board, by the display, is the fuse, transformer, and other
115 volt ac components. DO NOT work in this area with the unit plugged in. The
circuitry to the right of the display is 12 VDC or less which is considered safe (although
care must still be taken not to short out or damage the unit)
When the "CAL Lb" message is displayed the operator should enter the value of the
weight to be applied for calibration AND apply that weight to the scale (cal weight >
25% full scale is recommended). After applying the calibration weight to the scale press
the PRINT key again.
The display will read "StEP 2". This message indicates that the second step in the
DW750 keyboard calibration has been entered. During this phase the indicator decides

- 13 -

whether additional course adjustments of zero and gain are necessary. No operator
response is required until the next message is displayed.
After approximately 30 seconds, the indicator will display either "g ___" or the next
parameter selection will be displayed ("SA"). If the calibration procedure is complete,
the next parameter selection will display. In this case, no additional steps are required for
keyboard calibration.
If the display reads "g ___", it indicates that the jumpers for gain adjust are incorrectly
set. The optimum value here is 100. If the value displayed is BELOW 100, adjust the
gain jumper setting to the next LOWER mV/V value(i.e. 2.0 mV/V > 1.5 mV/V). If the
value displayed is ABOVE 100, adjust the gain jumper to the next HIGHER mV/V
value(i.e. 2.0 mV/V > 3.0 mV/V). After the correct adjustment has been made, press the
PRINT key.
NOTE: To acheive additional gain for scale bases with less than .75mV/V output,
gain adjust pins 1, 2, 4 may be jumpered together. For even more gain, jumper all gain
adjust pins together.
The display will flash "CLEAr SCALE". Clear the scale and press the PRINT key again.
At this point the indicator will re-start the calibration procedure with
step 7.

connected in order for the indicator to work properly.

ID/ACCUMULATION
The indicator has the capability of storing up to 10 ID/accumulation entries in its
ID/accumulation table. Before accumulating, at least one ID must be entered into the
table. If an ID has not been entered into the table, the indicator will display "no id" when
the ACCUM key or the ID key is pressed. Enter an ID consisting of six numeric
characters or less on the numeric keypad and press the ID key.
The operator may also enter an ID into the ID/accumulation table by entering the ID on
the numeric keypad and then pressing the ACCUM key. If a valid accumulation weight
is present on the scale, the indicator will record the ID and then accumulate the net
weight under that ID. The scale weight reading must go to zero and then weight must be
re-applied each time before accumulating.
When the ACCUM key is pressed, the indicator will display the current accumulation
value until pressure on the key is released. The indicator will test for motion, and when
clear of motion, will display "ACCuM" momentarily when accumulating. If the scale has
not returned to zero since the previous accumulation, the indicator will not display the
"ACCuM" message and will not accumulate.
To display the current ID, press the ID key only.
To enter an additional ID, or to make a previously entered ID the current ID, simply enter
in the ID number on the numeric keypad and press the ID key or
the ACCUM key.
To delete the current ID table entry, press the "0" key and follow by pressing the ID key.
Once a table entry has been deleted, a new entry must be made in that table location or a
previously entered ID must be made current, in order to accumulate again.

- 18 -

To zero out the accumulated net weight for a particular ID, press the "0" key followed by
the ACCUM key.
SETPOINTS
The DW750 is supplied standard with two setpoint cutoffs.
To store the cutoff value for setpoint #1:
1. Enter in the cutoff weight on the numeric keypad. The entered weight
will automatically be rounded to the nearest scale graduation.
2. Press the SET 1 key.
3. If the entered value is greater than a previously entered value (if any)
for setpoint #2, the indicator will display "SP Err", else the value will
be stored in device memory.
To store the cutoff value for setpoint #2:
1. Enter in the cutoff weight on the numeric keypad. The entered weight
will automatically be rounded to the nearest scale graduation.
2. Press the SET 2 key.
3. If the entered value is less than a previously entered value (if any) for
setpoint #1, the indicator will display "SP Err", else the value will be
stored in device memory.
To recall either setpoint value, press and hold the corresponding SET key.
Each setpoint has an annunciator lamp labeled "SET 1" or "SET 2". The corresponding
lamp will turn on when the setpoint output is on (+5V).
Setpoint values are stored in non-volatile memory. If power is lost to the indicator,
setpoint values will be re-loaded upon power-up.
The setpoint outpoints can be configured for normally off (output is 0Vdc till setpoint
reached) or normally on (output is +5Vdc till setpoint reached) using
the "Spt on" parameter. See parameter setup for details.
Cutoff wiring to a pair of external solid state relays (optional), is done according to the
following drawing.

- 19 -

The setpoint 1 and setpoint 2 outputs source 5 VDC at 50 mA max. when the setpoint is
"on". The outputs are pulled to digital GND through a 1K ohm resistor when the setpoint
is "off".
WARNING: Never allow a direct short from either SET1 or SET2 to GND. This
can cause serious damage to the DW750 and unsafe heat buildup.
NOTE: Never try to drive a load directly from the setpoint outputs. An optically
isolated, zero cross relay is recommended.

PIECE COUNTING

If DW750 is sealed with the parameter setup jumper set in the parameter lock mode
(jumper J1 pins 1 to 2), the piece count feature will be disabled. Otherwise, to count
pieces:
1. Insure that the scale is at zero.
2. If using a container (pan, box, scoop, etc.) place the container on the
scale and ZERO the scale or tare (auto-tare or keyboard-tare) the
container
3. To setup the indicator for piece count mode, place sample pieces on
the scale platform and enter the sample number into the numeric
keypad. Press the GROSS/NET key. The display will show "COUNT" for 1
second and then the sample quanitity will be displayed on the left side of the indicator
display. As pieces are added, the displayed quanitity will update. Both the "lb" and
the "kg" annunciator lamp will be turned off when the indicator is in the piece count
mode. The piece count is always left justified on the DW750 display.
4.

In order to display weight again, simply press the GROSS/NET key one

time.

ERROR MESSAGES
Description
oL - Overload. Displayed when the scale value is greater than rated capacity of the scale.
Scale over-capacity calculation also takes
into account push-button zero and tracked zero.
SPErr - Setpoint Error. Displayed when error occurred during entry of setpoints.
Setpoint 1 must not exceed value of Setpoint 2.
trErr - Transmit Error. Displayed when the indicator is unable to complete transmission
of data through RS-232C port. Consult factory representative if this error occurs.
EESE - Non-volatile Memory Write Error. Consult factory representative if this error
occurs.
EErE - Non-volatile Memory Read Error. Consult factory representative if this error
occurs.
rAErr - RAM Memory Error. Consult factory representative if this error occurs.

- 22 -

no id - ID Error. This message is displayed if ID key or ACCUM key is pressed without

an ID present in the currently active ID/accumulation table record. See
"ID/Accumulation Operation" for details.
tdErr - Transmit Error. Displayed when indicator is unable to complete transmission of
data through RS-232C port. Occurs only if using hardware flow control. When
attempting to output characters to its serial port, the DW750 will test for "on" (positive)
on CTS. If the signal is not detected within approximately 4 seconds, the indicator will
"time out" with this error.

RS-232 INTERFACE
The DW750 is equipped with a bi-directional RS-232C interface. The Printer/ Setpoint
interface connector on the DW750 is designed for a simple interface to most serial RS232C compatible printers. If you purchase the printer/setpoint interface cable (option),
simply connect the 8 pin Circular Plastic Connector to the DW750 and the 25 pin d-type
to the printer.
For custom interfaces the pinout and description is shown below.

- 24 -

The format of the RS-232 data transmitted and received by the DW750 is as follows:
Baud Rate
Start Bit
Data Bits
Parity
Stop Bit

300, 600, 1200 (selectable in parameters)

1
will work at 7 or 8
none
1

Be sure the format of the DW750 data matches the format of the printer or computer
being used. The baud rate can be changed by entering parameter setup, pressing the print
key until "br1200" is display, and using the zero key to select the required baud rate.
If the DW750 transmits data faster than the printer or computer can process it, data can
be lost. In this case hardware flow control can be used to stop DW750 data transmission
whenever the printer or computer requires it. To use hardware flow control, connect the
CTS line (pin 5 on the DW750 connector) to the other device's RS-232C compatible flow
control output (usually DTR or RTS). Enter parameter setup and press the PRINT key
until "FC off" is displayed. Press the ZERO key until the display reads "FC on". The
DW750 will now transmit characters only if the CTS pin is in the on (positive) state.
HIGH STATIC AREA GROUNDING TECHNIQUES
CAUTION: The ground lug on the power cord MUST BE LEFT INTACT. Failure to
achieve an acceptable ground may cause a signifcant deteriation of RFI and line noise
immunity causing instability and or damage in the instrument.
CAUTION: Certain materials may cause or generate significant static charges when
loaded into hoppers or onto the scale.
Scale bases and all other conductive fixtures attached to the scale base must be
electrically bonded together and attached to a GOOD EARTH GROUND.
Failure to provide an adequate path to ground for static discharges will cause
damage to the instrument.
Units damaged due to inadequate grounding ARE NOT SUBJECT TO
STANDARD WARRANTY CONSIDERATIONS.
This Sterling Instrument has been designed utilizing the maximum possible
protection available against RFI, EMI, and Static.
Caution must be taken in high static environments to insure proper operation of
this instrument.

- 25 -

This instrument will stand a static charge up to 15,000 volts using a proper earth
ground. If discharges above this magnitude are exceded it is the responsibility of
OTHERS to make sure that proper bleeder ground are installed as per factory
specifications.
PLEASE NOTE: ANY DEVIATION FROM FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS
ON PROTECTIVE GROUNDING PROCEDURES WILL VOID THE WARRANTY.
