Plein Air Writing Practice:
Nourish Your Writing through Silence

Plein air painters take brush and canvas to
the open air to catch the moment. We will
take pen and notebook to record our own
impressions—the sights, sounds, smells, and
textures of our surroundings, as well as the
landscape of our minds. Using timed writings,
we’ll capture “first thoughts” on paper, deepen
our connection to the natural beauty of the
Monterey Peninsula, and discover the truth
within each of us along the way. Class will be
held in silence except when reading our work
aloud.
Each session includes a silent, short walk
or easy hike and ample time for writing,
reading aloud, and nonjudgmental listening.
Please bring a pen and notebook and wear
comfortable walking shoes and clothing

An inside look into the writer’s life and the

world of making books. Hosted by award-
winning author Patrice Vecchione, this six-
week course will take you from glimmer of
inspiration to publication and beyond. We’ll
look at the practical sides of writing as well as
the soulful ones.

Three of the area’s finest writers will provide

an intimate look at the paths they took to the
books they’ve published. Here’s your chance
to peek into their lives and ask them about
inspiration, discipline and motivation. In
addition, two local publishers will take you
from finished work to the printed page.

to sit down with pen and paper and then want to take
that writing past one’s notebook? How do you know
when a piece of writing is finished?

For as much as a poem is a thing written down, it’s
first of all a heard thing, listening for the heart of
the matter. Not necessarily actual conversation but
wind through trees or a line from the morning’s
paper that won’t let go, the small things that call
your name. In order to write a poem the poet
listens within and without. We’ll read a number
of poems and write all day and in one of the area’s
most gorgeous and poetically infused locations,

Join in a facilitated exploration of questions
about women, power, and peace as you take
part in a Video Seminar featuring Eve Ensler,
Carol Gilligan, Rianne Eisler, Jane Fonda,
and Four Nobel Laureates. First organized
by The Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New
York (www.eomega.org), and V-Day the
global movement founded by Eve Ensler to
stop violence against women and girls, these
inspiring lectures highlight bold action steps
that women are initiating all over the world
in their families, communities, and the public
spheres to dignify and legitimize the values

We’ll make art from recycled, found and
salvaged items in the two-dimensional art
form of collage. Collage is the most democratic
of medias —you don’t have to know how to
draw! You’ll discover how to engage your
imagination, to think in new ways, to find art
where you may have not thought it could be.
Your creativity will expand and flourish. At the
end of the day you’ll leave with two finished
pieces. Holiday gifts, perhaps?

UNEARTHING THE PAST:
The Prehistory of Monterey Bay
Instructor: Dustin McKenzie
The coast of California was occupied by Native
Americans for at least 12,000 years. During
this long period, Native cultures adapted to
shifts in the natural and cultural environment
and achieved levels of complexity rare among
hunter-gatherers. Unfortunately, the media
infrequently reports on local archaeology
and our K-12 education largely dismisses
California’s past prior to the mission system.
The focus of this course is on the prehistory
of Monterey Bay, from initial habitation by
indigenous peoples to the massive changes
caused by Spanish colonization. We will
investigate data from a number of local
archaeological sites from the Monterey
Peninsula to Santa Cruz, and beyond. We will
visit a local site where we can see and feel the
past, discuss ethics, and problems through the
construction of archaeological knowledge.

Roxane tutors, facilitates writing circles, and has
assisted with creative writing workshops at the
Esalen Institute.
Karen Davis is Senior Film Programmer for the
Mill Valley Film Festival.  She teaches courses in
world cinema and cultural studies, and has been
on the faculty of several institutions, including
CSUMB and Vassar College.  She has also written,
produced, and directed numerous film and video
productions, primarily in the documentary genre.
Bruce Elliott is a retired Senior Biologist
Supervisor with the California Department of Fish
and Game.
Paulette Gissendanner has completed graduate
work in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. She
is a professor in the Music and Performing Arts

Pat Hanson, PhD and former National Writers
Union Chapter 7 Chair, finalized a proposal (with
input from the OLLI Passion to Print success team)
that is currently being shopped around by a New
York City agent. She is the sexuality columnist for
a new magazine: Crone: Women Coming of Age,
has taught Women’s Health Issues at Monterey
Peninsula College and is an adjunct faculty
member in Service Learning at CSUMB.
Fred Keeley is the current elected Treasurer of
Santa Cruz County. He represented the Monterey
Bay area in the California State Assembly from
1996-2002. He is a member of the Leadership
Council of California Forward.
Elin Kelsey, PhD recently toured Europe with
her brand new book for children, Hey! Not Your
Typical Book About the Environment. Her most
recent adult book, Watching Giants: The Secret
Lives of Whales was released in paperback by UC
Press in 2009 and was selected as a “Best Reads
for 2009” by Canada’s National Public Radio
Network (CBC).  Elin consults on international
environmental communication projects and is an
adjunct professor at Royal Roads University.

Wellington Lee is a writer and Salinas native.
Forty-five years after leaving Salinas he returned
in 2008 to complete a book on his grandfather,
Shorty Lee, known as the unofficial Mayor of
Chinatown, who first arrived and settled in Salinas
Chinatown exactly 100 years earlier in 1908. As a
journalist Mr. Lee has written numerous articles
for East/West, The Young China, and the Salinas
Californian, and newsletters for the National
Steinbeck Center, Monterey County Historical
Society, and Chinese Association of Salinas,
where he is on the Executive Board and Board of
Directors.  
Don Mautner has been a part-time lecturer
at CSUMB within the Environmental Science,
Technology, and Policy (ESTP) Division for the
last 8 years. He comes with a Bachelor’s degree
in Meteorology from San Jose State, a Master’s
degree from Naval Postgraduate School, and 30
years operational experience as a naval officer
oceanographer and meteorologist.
Dustin McKenzie has been involved in
archaeology along the central coast of California
for over 12 years. His personal research has
focused on hunter-gatherer fishing practices and
maritime adaptations from Monterey Bay to the
California Channel Islands. He has also conducted
archaeological investigations in the Mojave
Desert, the Great Basin, Mexico, Germany, and
Australia. Dustin currently teaches archaeology
and cultural anthropology at Cabrillo College.
William Minor has published three nonfiction
books on music: Unzipped Souls: A Jazz Journey
Through the Soviet Union (Temple University Press,
1995), Monterey Jazz Festival: Forty Legendary
Years (Angel City Press, 1997), and Jazz Journeys
to Japan: The Heart Within (University of Michigan
Press, 2004). The San Francisco Chronicle called
Monterey Jazz Festival: Forty Legendary Years the
“definitive story” of the event. Mr. Minor has been
interviewed by CNN, BBC and the Charleston
Jazz Initiative, wrote the liner notes for “The
Theolonious Monk Quartet: Live at the Monterey
Jazz Festival 1964” CD and served as a consultant
when the MJF celebrated its 50th anniversary.

SALINAS CHINATOWN:
ONCE AND AGAIN
Instructor: Wellington Lee
There has always been a Chinese presence
among the populace of Salinas, even before
it was incorporated as a city and county seat.
Why did the Chinese settle in Salinas? When
did they establish Chinatown? How have they
remained a close-knit and active community to
this day?
This three-part series begins with a lecture
142 Years of the Chinese in Salinas based on Mr.
Lee’s research and memorabilia from three
generations of his Salinas family. Part two
is a walking tour of his old neighborhood,
the starting point for the current Salinas
Chinatown Renewal Project. Beginning at the
Chinese Association of Salinas and Chinese
School, followed by stops at the Filipino
Cultural Center, Buddhist Temple, Republic
Cafe, Green Gold Inn, the tour will end at Bing
Kong Tong, all within walking distance of each
other.
The course wraps up with a one-day
symposium featuring Jack Tchen, co-founder
of the Museum for Chinese in America in New
York City, accompanied by a panel of scholars
and museum professionals. Members of the
Salinas Asian communities as well as students
from CSUMB will showcase the Asian Cultural
Center and Museum planned for the old
Chinatown neighborhood. This dialogue will
conclude with a wine and cheese reception.
MODERN SPIRITUAL MASTERS

Where is wisdom to be found? If you want to
know the truth about your health, wouldn’t
you go to the best doctor possible? And, if
you want to have your car repaired, wouldn’t
you want the best mechanic? Where would
you go to find wisdom? One place to start is
to study the great masters of the East and the
West. After all, they are the experts. In this
latest “Spiritual Masters” series we will study
two living masters. First, we will study the
Christian monk, Thomas Keating, one of the
founders of Contemplative Outreach and the
central figure behind the Centering Prayer
form of Christian meditation and prayer. Next,
we will study Pema Chodron, the American
grandmother and Tibetan Buddhist nun.
Chodron is a popular spiritual teacher as
well as a contributor to the growing Buddhist
movement in America.

CANINES OF THE WILD

The wild canine species of the New World,
past and present, span a fascinating variety of
predatory animal species. These range from
our familiar California taxa, such as three fox
species and the coyote, to more exotic forms
such as the two North American wolf species,
the dainty Arctic fox and such bizarre dogs
as an ant-termite hunting species and a crab-
eating fox.
Some of the known fossil forms are especially
impressive. One will find it a relief that the
huge Dire Wolf of the Pleistocene Epoch is
no longer with us. The biology of existing
American species will be reviewed as part of
this illustrated lecture.

The weather and climate of a region influence
our daily lives well beyond determining
what clothes we wear each morning. The

circulation patterns; leading to a critical look

INTEGRAL PHILOSOPHY

Is there a way of understanding life that
makes any sense in our rapidly changing
world? Do the seemingly conflicting ways of
understanding our world fit together? Science
has long looked for a “Grand Unified Theory”.
Is there such a theory in philosophy? Perhaps
there is! Integral Philosophy proposes to be
a “theory of everything”. It is not so much a
new system of thought as it is a new way of
organizing and understanding diverse fields of
thought. It makes room for everything and it is
therefore both universal and inclusive.

philosopher Ken Wilber and his work, which
is becoming known as Integral Philosophy. We

THREE WORLDS OF JAZZ:
A CULTURAL HISTORY

From its inception as a Mom and Pop Store
operation, through its evolution into a major
musical event with an international reputation,
the Monterey Jazz Festival has had the tenacity
to remain true to its original vision. In this
course, we will examine the Festival’s ability
to be what it set out to be via a set of carefully
designed principles, and what made and
continues to make it unique. We will listen
to the music presented over the years and
interviews with major musical artists who
made that music, yesterday and today. We
will also take a look at the Festival’s model
educational program.
By way of cultural comparison and contrast,
we will explore jazz in the former Soviet
Union and Japan and discuss the initial appeal
and adoption of jazz, attempts to fuse it with
indigenous music, training and performing
opportunities for musical artists, and what
makes the music of each culture unique.

International Social-Issue Films

Always a highlight for the fall season,
don’t miss out on one of OLLI’s most
popular offerings. Now in its 11th year, the
International Film Festival presented by the
Monterey Bay Chapter of the United Nations
Association (November 4 - 7, 2010 at the
Golden State Theatre in downtown Monterey)
presents an excellent selection of international
documentary films focusing on important
global issues including war and peace,
human rights, world health and economics,
environmental concerns and intercultural
understanding. This course offers a preview
of Festival films (selection to be announced)
as well as an opportunity to share, discuss,
and evaluate the move-going experience with
others (admission to two days of the Festival is
included in course registration).
Three pre-Festival class sessions will provide
background, context, film excerpts, discussion
and screenings of other seldom-seen social-

varied habitat types for wintering locations
south of our U.S. - Mexican border (for some
species as far as Argentina). We will also savor
a bit of migration afield, in a favorite songbird
and waterfowl habitat just south of Carmel.
Our field trip will begin after lunch and will
find us at the Carmel River Reserve on the
south bank of the Carmel River. There may
be cool on-shore winds so carry along a light
jacket. Please wear footwear suitable for
walking on dirt trails (there are no hills to
climb).

Never before has California’s electoral
landscape been as captivating as in 2010.
Heated races for Governor, U.S. Senator and
Attorney General along with divisive battles
over critical ballot measures promise to make
this election season one for the ages. Noted
California officeholder Fred Keeley returns
with an insider’s view of the 2010 California
Elections, providing a fascinating look at what
really takes place during a statewide election.
This six-part series will include lectures as
well as guest appearances by seasoned pros
directly involved in the candidate and ballot
campaigns. First, attendees will gain an
understanding of the impact of the recent
Primary on the General Election. Then,
the course will cover the ins-and-outs of
the unfolding General Election with an
emphasis on the race for Governor and other
constitutional offices as well as the measures
that will appear on the November ballot.
This presentation is an introduction to the
major physical and geological features, and
the chemical, and biological processes of the
earth’s oceans. Special emphasis is placed on
developing an integrated look at the physical
processes (wave, tides, tsunamis, etc.), and the
resultant worldwide ocean circulation patterns.
Explored are the unique chemical properties
of water and seawater that support all life on
earth.
Part 2: Monterey Bay, A Case Study
This second half of the introduction to the
earth’s oceans presentation describes the
uniqueness of the Monterey Bay ecosystem
and the diversity within the kelp forests.
Also addressed are some of the impacts of
human activities, such as fishing, agriculture,
aquaculture, and urban development on the
local Monterey Bay environment. Emphasis is
placed on local science and policy issues within
the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
