SCOPE
This SOP describes procedures for evaluating an anti-reflective coatings ability
to adhere to a substrate and its susceptibility to crazing. It also describes how
to test adhesion of a hard coating or an anti-reflective coating on an organic
lens. This test is an attempt to replicate normal wear during the life of a
prescription lens.

DEFINITIONS
3.1
Coating - any coating designed to decrease the reflection of a lens
surface.
3.2
Hard Coating - coatings intended to increase the abrasion
resistance over that of the substrate.
3.3
Crosshatch - the creation of cuts through a coated lens surface that
are at 90 to each other.

AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY

5.1
5.2

It is the Lab Managers responsibility to assure the individuals performing

the test are properly trained in the methodology.
It is the responsibility of the individual performing the test to be
familiar with the methodology prior to testing.

6.0 PROCEDURE (THERMAL SHOCK TEST)

6.0.1 Test Specimen Any AR coated substrate of the proper dimensions.
6.0.2 Condition the lenses according to COLT SOP # M-22-14.
6.1 METHODOLOGY (PREPARE THE WATER)
6.1.1 Wash Lenses according to SOP # M-22-15.
6.1.2 Inspect all lenses to ensure that they do not have any obvious
defects that might influence test results. -Before proceeding: note
any defects such as stains, smears, streaks or cloudiness, etc.
6.1.3 Fill the 3500-ml beaker with 1750 ml of deionized water.
6.1.4 Weigh out 78.8 grams of sodium chloride and add to the deionized
water.
6.1.5 Weigh out 14.6 grams of sodium phosphate and add to the
deionized water.
6.1.6 Place the beaker on the stirrer hotplate and while heating the
solution, stir until dissolved.
6.1.7 Once the salt has dissolved bring the solution to a boil.
6.1.8 Deionized water may need to be added throughout the test to
maintain 1750 ML of salt solution.
6.1.9 Fill the second beaker with deionized water.
Note: The temperature of the water needs to be maintained
between 18 24C throughout the test.
7.0

PROCEDURE (CROSSHATCH TEST)

7.1
METHODOLOGY
7.1.1 Wash all lenses.
7.1.2 Inspect lenses to insure that they do not have any obvious blemishes
that might influence test results. Pretest photos may be necessary.
-Before proceeding: note any evidence of defects, stains,
smears, streaks or cloudiness.
7.1.3 Place the lens to be tested, with the concave face down on the
work surface.
7.1.4 If necessary, make sure of the correct blade alignment by
pressing the tool on the work surface.
7.1.5 For better reproducibility (linked to the hard coating
thickness), make a grid 5-10mm in from the edge.
7.1.6 Make a total of six incisions towards the edge of the lens.
7.1.7 Make six additional incisions perpendicular to the first ones: grid
formation (avoid letting the incisions go outside the square).
7.1.8 After making the grid, remove the dust and particles with

compressed air, as they might upset the adhesion of the

adhesive tape on the lens.
7.1.9 Check that the grid contains no chips and that the incisions are even.
If the cutting tool makes too many chips, make sure that the blades
are sharp and properly aligned; and then make another grid next to
the first one.
APPLYING THE ADHESIVE TAPE (CROSSHATCH TEST cont.)
7.1.10 Unroll the adhesive tape and cut off the part previously exposed
to air.
7.1.11 Slowly remove a length of Scotch Brand #600 tape approximately
three inches in length.
7.1.12 Apply tape over the cross hatched pattern on the front side of the
lens allowing one end of the tape to extend past the end of the
lens by at least inch.
7.1.13 Press several times with the flat or rounded end of the spatula
from the inside toward the outside of the lens so that no air bubble
may be trapped between the tape and the lens. Use the flat end
of the spatula to for the convex side and the rounded end for the
concave side.
7.1.14 In ninety (90) seconds +/- thirty (30) seconds; HOLDING THE
LENS FIRMLY, grasp the extended end of the tape with your
other hand and pull rapidly to the opposite side of the lens as
close to an angle of 180* as possible.
7.1.15 Repeat the operation (cutting, applying, tearing off the tape) two
(2) more times.
8.0

ASSESSMENT AND CALCULATION

-note any evidence of defects, stains, smears, streaks or cloudiness
-For crosshatch test; assessment shall follow the method outlined in
exhibit A.
8.1

REPORT

THE FOLLOWING STEPS REFER TO THERMAL SHOCK TEST

Note: the temperature of the water needs to be maintained
between 18-24* C throughout the test.
9.1.1 Before the lenses are immersed in the salt solution record the
temperature of both the boiling salt water and the deionized water.
9.1.2 Set one timer for 2 minutes and the other for 1 minute.
9.1.3 Place the test lenses in the lens holder and as soon as the saltwater
comes to a boil, submerge the test lenses and start the 2-minute
timer
9.1.4 After 2 minutes (-0/+5 seconds), remove the lenses, submerge
them in the deionized water and start the 1-minute timer.
9.1.5 After 1 minute (-0/+5 seconds) remove the lenses.
9.1.6 Remove the lenses from the lens holder and gently dry with a soft
cloth.
9.1.6 Using the high intensity lamp, examine both concave and convex
sides of the lens for any effects.
9.1.7 Record any effects. Refer to exhibit A.
9.1.8 Repeat 7.1.1 through 7.1.7 five more times for a total of 6 times.
9.1.9 Photos are taken after the final immersion (12 minutes) if effects
are seen.
9.2 REPORT
- THERMAL SHOCK TEST
9.2.1 Report the effects for both the front and the back surfaces for
each lens according to the classification charts in Exhibit A.
9.2.2 Digital camera photographs will be taken for all lenses
showing an effect.
