ThisIndianStandard(FourthRevision)wasadoptedbytheBureauofIndian
Standards,afterthedraftfinalizedbytheWaterSupplyandSanitationinBuildingSectional
CommitteehadbeenapprovedbytheCivilEngineeringDivisionCouncil.
ThisIndianStandardwasfirstpublishedin1957andsubsequentlyrevisedin1963,
1971and1983.Inthisrevision,requirementsofwatersupplyforresidenceshasbeenlisted
basedonpopulationofthecommunity.However,forLowerIncomeGroup(LIG)and
EconomicalWeakerSectionofSociety(EWS),thevalueofminimumrequirementofwater
supplyhasbeenretainedas135litresperheadperday.Firedemandinbuildingshasbeen
cateredto,bygivingreferencetoasuitablestandard.
Thiscoderepresentsastandardofgoodpracticeand,therefore,takestheformof
recommendations.

1SCOPE
1.1
Thisstandardlaysdownbasicrequirementsforwatersupply,drainageandsanitation
forresidential,commercial,industrialandothertypesofbuildingsinurbanareasincluding
railwayplatforms,busstationsandterminals,seaports,airportsandmarketyards.
1.2
Thisstandarddoesnottakeintoconsiderationtherequirementsofwaterfor
industrialplantsandprocesseswhichhavetobeprovidedforseparatelydependingupon
individualrequirements.Italsodoesnottakeintoaccountovercrowding,bothcasualand
permanent,andisbasedontheassumptionthattheaveragesizeofafamilyis5,and9m2
floorareaisoccupiedbynotmorethantwopersons.Itdoesnotprovideformunicipal
watersupplyrequirementssuchasforstreetcleaning,etc.

3GENERALREQUIREMENTS
3.0
Allbuildingsshallconformtothefollowinggeneralrequirementsinregardtowater
supply,drainageandsanitation.
3.1
Allpremise[IllegibleTextOmittedonPage1]forhumanhabitation,occupancyor
[IllegibleTextOmittedonPage1]providedwiththesupplyof[IllegibleTextOmittedon
Page1],neitherconnectedwithunsafewater[IllegibleTextOmittedonPage1]subjectto
thehazardsofbackfloworbacksiphonage.
3.2
Plumbingfixtures,devicesandappurtenancesshallbesuppliedwithwaterin
sufficientvolumeandatpressuresadequatetoenablethemtofunctionsatisfactorilyunder

allnormalconditionsofuse.
3.3
Plumbingshallbedesignedandadjustedtousetheminimumquantityofwater
consistentwithproperperformanceandcleaning.
3.4
Devicesforheatingandstoringwatershallbesodesignedandinstalledastoprevent
dangersfromexplosionthroughoverheating.
3.5
Everybuildinghavingplumbingfixturesinstalledandintendedforhuman
habitation,occupancyoruseonpremisesabuttingonastreet,alleyoreasementinwhich
thereisapublicsewer,shallhaveconnectionwiththesewer.
NOTEAneasementisarightwhichtheowneroroccupierofcertain
landpossessesassuchforthebeneficialenjoymentofthatland,todoand
continuetodosomething,ortopreventandcontinuetopreventsomething
beingdone,inoruponorinrespectof,certainotherlandnothisown
(definitiontakenfromIndianEasementsAct,1882).
3.6
Eachfamilydwellingunitonpremisesabuttingonasewerorwithaprivatesewage
disposalsystemshallhave,atleast,onewaterclosetandonekitchensink.Itisdesirable
thatabathroomwithataporshowershouldbeinstalledtomeetthebasicrequirementsof
sanitationandpersonalhygiene.
3.7
Allotherstructuresforhumanoccupancyoruseonpremisesabuttingonaseweror
withaprivatesewagedisposalsystemshallhaveadequatesanitaryfacilities,butinnocase
lessthanonewaterclosetandoneotherfixtureforcleaningpurposes.
4WATERSUPPLYREQUIREMENTS
4.1WaterSupplyforResidences
Aminimumof70to100litresperheadperdaymaybeconsideredadequatefor
domesticneedsofurbancommunities,apartfromnondomesticneedsasflushing
requirements.As

inaccordancewithTable1.
5DRAINAGEANDSANITATIONREQUIREMENTS
5.1General
Thereshallbeatleastonewatertapandarrangementsfordrainageinthevicinityof
eachwaterclosetorgroupofwaterclosetsinallbuildings.
5.2Residences
5.2.1
Dwellingswithindividualconveniencesshallhaveatleastthefollowingfitments:
a.Onebathroomprovidedwithatap,
b.Onewatercloset,and
c.Onenahaniorsinkeitherinthefloororraisedfromthefloorwithatap.
