Assignment: Peer Review of Instructional Modules

Course: ITEC 67444
Module #6 - Sharon Doughten
1. Summarize the experience including:

The module for Food Guides contained six objectives that were very clear on what the student
was going to learn. Each section was clearly labeled and easy to navigate. The overview link
contained a list of what was needed to be read, what was to be listened to, and what the
assignment was. Instantly I could see that there were two quizzes in a section named Then do
This, a discussion, and an assignment that was to be completed by the due date of November
17, 2013.
The first item in the module; History of USDA Food Guides is an excellent historical change of
nutrient levels and intake of food to show students how the thinking of food has changed over
the years. The next section on the Food guide review Quiz #1 was short and to the point. I like
how it gave me immediate feedback on my score for the three question quiz.
The MyPlate audio was a very clear recording and well done multimedia feature. One problem
within the presentation was that some of the graphics were covering other graphics. Overall the
content of the information was very useful and full of essential details.
The MyPlate work folder had eight sections to work on that at first looked rather intimidating for
time but turned out to be just right. After I saved the grading rubric for the assignment I
discovered more directions contained within the document on how to complete the assignment.
The 1st video SuperTracker audio was very low. I had to turn my volume controls way up to
hear it and had me nervous that the sound would suddenly jump up. Overall the video was very
descriptive and useful for me to see how the SuperTracker works. The 2nd video also had the
same volume level problem. Very pertinent information was provided by the instructor. I like
how the video added different foods and showed how to hunt it down on the list and then add it
in. The 3rd video also had the same volume level problem and also contained useful information
on the software.
The Grain pdf page was very informational on size of common objects to size of a proportion.
The comparison of everyday objects allows for even young children to visualize size when it
comes to how much to eat and or not eat. Healthy oils took me about five minutes to read
through. I have a personal involvement on the topic of good and bad oils; this is a high priority
for all people to understand!
The Protein link was very useful in describing the different types and sources of proteins.
I then had to sign up for the USDA ChooseMyPlate.gov website. This took three minutes and I
had to choose what emails I could receive. I chose none as it I know it will send me too much
information. Perhaps the students should be warned about the choices of emails that may be
exposed to if they choose to receive them.
The MyPlate match Quiz #2 took me less than a minute and gave me instant feedback on my
score that I like when taking online tests.
I was not sure what to do with the SuperTracker assignment so I wrote the instructor to see what
she wanted me to do. She wrote me back and informed me of the government shut down might
have caused issues and that she was updating the assignment.
This module would be for a more advanced student in a Physical Education licensure program,
Nursing or nutrition class as it provided detailed information on dietary concerns. I have worked
extensively with this material before and still find it worthwhile to know!

Steve Walters - Peer Review Module #6 - 2

a. How long did it take to complete the module?

It took about 45 minutes to go through the module with the videos and quizzes. The
SuperTracker assignment took me 30 minutes to complete.
b. How long did it take to read the instructional materials

It took me about 5 minutes to read through all of the instructional material.

c. How long did it take to watch any multimedia

MyPlate audio was about 6 minutes long.

1st video SuperTracker less than 5 minutes
2nd video 5 minutes
3rd video took just over 2 minutes
d. How long did it take to complete the different activities

Quiz one took less than a minute.

Quiz two took less than a minute
e. Number of emails sent/received

I sent two mails and received two back regarding the SuperTracker assignment and the
government shutdown issue.
f.

Number of times that you posted to the discussion board

I posted one time to the discussion board.

g. Any technical issues experienced

The only technical issue I had was the volume was recorded very low on the three videos
regarding the SuperTracker info.
h. Anything else that you feel is relevant.

This module was well designed and I always find nutritional education as pertinent and
intriguing.
2. Evaluate module and provide your own qualitative feedback:
a. Provide a summary of your experience.

I enjoyed going through the module. It reminded of the hard work I completed in my physical
education licensure program as well as in my daily life when I learned the details of nutrition from
my bodybuilding days. The material was pertinent, current and vital for people to be exposed to
live healthier lives through eating more correctly.
b. How long did it take to complete all of the instructional materials?

The module took me about 45 minutes to go through. The SuperTracker activity took me about
30 minutes to complete. The readings of the pdf files carried in length but no more than 10
minutes total.

c. Did the instructor provide feedback regarding completed course assignments?

The instructor did not provide feedback but through the quizzes I was given immediate feedback.
The SuperTracker software also gave me immediate feedback for reflection on my dietary and
activity levels.
d. What did you think about the actual instructional strategies used?

I liked the way the material was presented. However, a student who is new to this material may
find it dry and unpalatable. I would also like to have had a checklist to check off what items I
completed. I am spoiled by the BB checklist and have found it to be an invaluable tool when
taking online classes. So far I have only seen it used in just one course to date!
e. Were the reading materials relevant? Interesting? Enjoyable?

The reading materials were interesting and enjoyable to read because there was not only
pertinent information to the topic of nutrition but a direct relationship to a daily activity we
participate in, eating.
f.

Were the multimedia instructional materials relevant? Interesting? Enjoyable?

The Jing videos were very helpful in seeing how to process information in SuperTracker. To
show a student where to input their information can be imperative to their success as opposed to
just telling them or letting them experiment, especially with SuperTracker.
3. Evaluate from the perspective of the student:
a. Did you find the instructional materials relevant? Interesting? Enjoyable?

I liked the information on nutrition. I would have liked to been able to hear the Jing presentations
better, the volume was set too low when recorded. But overall the videos were extremely helpful
in knowing what SuperTracker was going to look like and how it was going to work. The
instructors voice might be own words when I go about filling in the data. The quizzes were easy
but only because I have a background in nutrition.
b. Were the instructional activities enjoyable to complete?

I enjoyed taking the quizzes. The SuperTracker was fun in that it gave me instant numbers and
values on my intake of food.
c. Can you apply the instructional materials to other courses?

The instructional materials can only used for this module. I could probably use the information
in a math class because of the heavy math of adding and subtracting. I could even see using the
material in a marketing course that deals with promoting healthful eating habits. The material
could also be used in public health courses that deal with eating your way to a healthier way of
living.
d. Did the instructor show relevance of the instructional materials to the real world?

The material was very relevant to the real world since every time I eat I can recall the
information on what it is I am eating and what the food nutrient values are to my body for who I
am.

e. What did you enjoy the most? The least?

I enjoyed all parts of this module. I was at first a little apprehensive at the work load when I first
saw the module but then realized it was not so bad. Nutrition can get very detailed and involved
with certain types of tracking software that require a minute by minute accounting of a day to
predict caloric needs and usage.
I did not like the SuperTracker because it does not allow for adjusted portion sizes not on the list.
The software is fairly broad based for most people who eat normal food. There are a few foods
not listed in the list that I eat.
4. Evaluate based upon criteria from Quality Matters Rubric: 40 Points / (40 Points)
a. Course Overview and Introduction: Complete 1.1, 1.2, 1.5, & 1.7
1.1 Instructions make clear how to get started and where to find various course components.

3 Points

1.2 Students are introduced to the purpose and structure of the course.

3 Points

The instructions were very clear on how to get started with the module. There was no question
as what to do in what order. Every part of the module was labeled clearly and made sense.
The purpose of the course was made clear in that our health is related to what we eat.

1.5 Prerequisite knowledge in the discipline and/or any required competencies are clearly stated.

1 Point

1.7 The self-introduction by the instructor is appropriate and available online.

1 Point

This could be debated in whether or not a student needs prior experience in knowing what
foods they eat. Many people are clueless as to what they eat day to day and what it is
composed of until they make a daily diary.
The instructor had a good introduction and was available as to who she is and what she is
instructing.
b. Learning Objectives (Competencies): Complete 2.2
2.2 The module/unit learning objectives describe outcomes that are measurable and consistent with the courselevel objectives.
3 Points

The measurability of the module is clear through the use of two quizzes and the
SuperTracker assignment. The objectives of the module are clear in the first entry.
c. Assessment and Measurement: Complete 3.1 & 3.2

3.1 The types of assessments selected measure the stated learning objectives and are consistent with course
activities and resources.
3 Points

The two quizzes met the measurement of student knowledge. Both tests were very short
but right on track with the concept of the material presented.
3.2 The course grading policy is stated clearly.

3 Points

There is no clear grading scale for the module. The only items I can tell that would be
graded would be the two quizzes and the SuperTracker entry and submission.

d. Instructional Materials: Complete 4.1, 4.2, 4.5, & 4.6
4.1 The instructional materials contribute to the achievement of the stated course and module/unit learning
objectives.
3 Points

The instructional materials contributed nicely to the achievements of the stated module
objectives and learning objectives by reinforcing the value of good nutrition and the
positive effects it can have for healthier living.
4.2 The purpose of instructional materials and how the materials are to be used for learning activities are clearly
explained.
3 Points

The instructional materials were very clearly explained especially the use of SuperTracker
through a well laid out pdf file describing exactly what to enter and where to place the
information. The videos also were a big help for students in knowing where to click and
what to enter to get proper results.
4.5 The instructional materials present a variety of perspectives on the course content.

1 Points

The instructional materials only presented one perspective on the material. When dealing
with dietary issues the perspective is very narrow in what is right and what is wrong based
on choices.
e. Learner Interaction and Engagement: Complete 5.1 & 5.2
5.1 The learning activities promote the achievement of the stated learning objectives.

3 Points

5.2 Learning activities provide opportunities for interaction that support active learning.

3 Points

The activities in the module highly promoted the achievement of the stated learning objectives
by directly involving me with the topic of food. I had to recall and respond to available
information and then reflect on the feedback given by SuperTracker.
The activities I participated in within this module were highly supportive of the material being
presented. The SuperTracker involved a high degree of activity as I had to hunt for foods and
quantities consumed.
f. Course Technology: Complete 6.1 & 6.3
6.1 The tools and media support the course learning objectives.

3 Points

6.3 Navigation throughout the online components of the course is logical, consistent, and efficient.

3 Points

The tools used in this module were consistent with the content. The use of audio and video
inserts was supportive of the material. The use of pdfs also supported the students ability to
retain the knowledge.
I was able to proceed from one item to another in a clear progression with no divergent issues
in the material being presented. The module was smooth and directed at the topic of nutrition.
g. Learner Support: None for peer review
h. Accessibility: Complete 8.3
8.3 The course design facilitates readability and minimizes distractions.

3 Points

The only real distraction to the module was the low volume setting on the three videos about
SuperTracker. Everything else was ideal for the online environment of learning.
