Dear sisters and brothers:
The theme of this weeks readings repeatedly remind us to go humbly before the Lord. Blessings come to those who emulate the prophets who
came before us, despite the terrible consequences
they suffered for telling the truth.
Be humble, we are told, and tell the truth
anyway.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus details
the significance of humility and its relationship to
the prophets that preceded him. He tells us that if we
are indeed those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, who are merciful, who are peacemakers
and who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, abused for being Christs followers, then we
will receive the great rewards of heaven as did the
prophets of old, whom history recounts were maliciously attacked and brutalized by tyrants who
wielded over-weaning earthly power and authority.
Regardless of principalities and dominions,
we must remind ourselves of the promise of heaven
and recognize that our Lord has greater power still.
Therefore, before we crow too loudly about our own
skills, purposes and their outcomes, as Catholics we
should embody the above and recall what St. Paul
admonishes us to do: Whoever boasts, should boast
in the Lord.
Fr. Pedro Umaa, OFM
