We will set up a temporary Hybrid Laboratory mainly in the Studios at Prague College, and
we will create with all participants a 2 weeks evolving and creative environment to develop
audiovisual identities for the 3D Underground City.
Artists, designers, architects, interdisciplinary researchers, IT, and students will design, create
and implement 2D, 3D, 4D models to be used to build Underground City 3D experimental
architecture models, prototypes for the future UC 3D virtual environment.
Participants will mainly use 3D modeling tools and the 3D game engine Unity3D, presented
during the Prague evaluation workshop. They will use as well audiovisual techniques,
programming principles and interfaces to design, broadcast and interact within 3D
interactive multiuser environments.
rd
The 3 Prague workshop is connected to the Phase 3 and 4 of the UCXXI project and will
focus on the creation of the Underground City 3D platform. The laboratory will propose an
experimental and collaborative environment to help the preparation of Transart Festival, 9th to
th
20 September 2010, where will be presented publically the first results of the Underground
City 3D platform.
The action is proposed by Libat and Prague College and it will be directed by Pascal
Silondi, Marie Silondi, and Aurélie Besson. The action will start Saturday 03.07.2010 to
end Saturday 17.07.2010.
The workshop will mainly take place in the Studios at Prague College and will involve
international participants interested in 3D multiuser environment creation (professionals and
students) invited by the Co-organizers.
1. Definition of the current project phases:
Basic virtual city infrastructure will be defined, synthesizing different already realized studies
(Faculty of Mining, Zagreb) and using existing digital data provided by laser measuring of the
ex-coal mine (VIAS, Vienna).
An interdisciplinary European expert team will be established to develop proposals for some
spatial/urban units with streets, squares, parks, buildings, to design fundamental 'public'
buildings like museum, theatre, City Hall, gallery, cultural centre, to propose and integrate
various means of transport such as lifts, railways, cycle and walk tracks, as well as some other
infrastructure, for preparation of the 3D model construction Phase.”
3D artists and programmers in a close relationship with architects and designers will create the
first 3D model of the Underground City XXI based on real dimensions and situation of the ex-
coal mine, using advanced CAD techniques and results of the previous mine studies and
measuring. They will collaborate in experimentation and integration of architectural studies,
installations and utopistic architecture projects as well as in adaptation of gained
proposals/ideas to be optimally integrated in the future 3D virtual environment.”
Programmers will directly collaborate with expert team to enhance the potential of virtual 3D
environments and provide an advanced multi-user server platform. Server for computer aided
architectural design within real-time multi-user 3D platform will be provided, enabling
users/community members to visualize and communicate their proposals.
The UCC XXI platform will provide community communication tools (chatting, forums, message
boards and clubs), extensive multi-user functions (members and profile management) and
integration of web 3D formats (3D, 2D, audio, video and streaming media).
Regarding technology UC XXI platform will prefer networked 3D rendering engines, with
performance comparable to 3D games engines, which support character animation (avatars),
enhancing social experiences as well as web 3D content visualization.
Programmers directly co-operating with expert groups and artists will integrate 3D models
developed during the Phase 3. into multi-user environment shared and distributed on the
Internet.”
2. Definition of the action:
The 2 weeks are designed as a concrete continuous Laboratory. It’s an Interactive Media
evolving and creative environment where artists, interdisciplinary researchers, IT, and
students involved in 3D multiuser environment creation are invited to present, discuss and
share ideas, knowledge, knowhow, and to create 2D, 3D, 4D models that will be implemented
into the Underground City 3D multiuser environments using mainly the Unity3D game
engine.
It’s an experimental time when all participants will search collaboratively how to build bridges
between data streaming, arts and technologies with a focus on creating 3D multimedia
worlds shared and distributed on the Internet,
Participants will create 3D models and visual identity for the Underground City digital
environments using advanced 3D modeling and image manipulation tools. These models will
be integrated into initial 3D models of the ex-coal mine tunnels rebuilt and adapted last
months by P.Silondi and J.Grosz, based on data originally provided by VIAS (laser
measurement), Inge Schiller (laser measurement), and Platforma 9.81, (CAD plans).
• Communication systems
Definition and 3D design of the Communication systems, like streets, squares,
parks,
• Means of transport
Definition and 3D Design of means of transport such as lifts, railways, cycle and walk
tracks, as well as other infrastructure.
• Design, creation and integration of the City navigation/orientation systems like
message boards, plans, orientation signs, panels, boards, maps, radars, etc.
The Workshop will take place mainly in the Studios at Prague College, every day from 10.30 to
20.00 (and more if needed). The workshop is based on a non-linear Schedule.
Respecting the multi-layered architecture of the expected Underground City 3D platform we
will explore and interconnect those main topics regarding our interests, curiosity and needs.
