Industry Oriented Research Project
To Reduce Water Consumption and Optimize
Efficiency of Thermal Power Plants
by Using Air Cool Condensers

This Project is funded by the

Royal Academy of Engineering under
the Higher Education Partnership India Program.

The project is funded through the Higher Education Partnership India programme, an initiative under the
Newton-Bhabha Fund and run by the Royal Academy of Engineering in partnership with FICCI .
As per the World Bank World Development Indicators ,during year 2014 , in the world out of total energy
22433 TWH , 8726 TWH constituting 39% was generated using coal and in India , out of total energy of 1118
TWH , 800 TWH constituting 72% was generated using coal in UK , out of total energy of 311 TWH , 101
TWH constituting 32 % .
As per report of United Nations Department of Econ9omic and Social Affairs (UNDESA ) 90% of global
power generation is water intense and by 2035 global energy consumption will increase by 50% and
increasing water consumption by 85% . Today 15% of global water withdrawals are for energy production .
As on today , 2.8 billion people live in areas of high water scarcity . (Source : IEA 2012 and UN 2012) .
These huge amount of water withdrawal by power sector impact the ecosystem and on the water resources
of the region. Withdrawal of water has been significantly reduced at the expense of 5-10% of plant-level
efficiency by using Air cooled condenser. But , problem with air cooled condenser is also because of adverse
wind condition which affect the fan work, which in turn decreases the overall efficiency of power plant. In
addition to this performance of air cooled condenser is sensitive to operating conditions, such as ambient
temperature, wind, rain, hail, or solar radiation and turbine back pressure.
The Industry defined research project attempts to findout ways and means of reducing water consumption
and optimizing efficiency of thermal power plants by using Air Cooled Condensers. In this project,
researchers with the aid of ANSYS, MATLAB and STADPRO will try to develop model design of ACCs.

Advanced Technology Institute

The Advanced Technology Institute is an interdisciplinary research centre
dedicated to advancing next-generation electronic and photonic device
technologies.
Our strategy is based on having selective and focussed programmes of
research, each of critical mass, which embrace in their investigations the full
spectrum of fundamental science through to applied engineering. We are
proud of our record of excellence, and proud of the practical benefits our work
has brought to the wider World. We believe our contributions to academia,
industry and society as a whole will place us as one of the leading research
laboratories in advanced technologies on an international basis.

From our contributions to the design of the first strain layer laser in the mid 80's to rapid thermal annealing
and production of SIMOX for semiconductors in the 90's to nano-materials and nano-technologies in the last
decade; our researchers have been at the forefront in helping to solve some of the most challenging
problems in industry today. We are also examining such issues as the fabrication of cheap renewable energy
sources, and work with industry to deliver high quality output wherever it is required.
Presently, there are some 160 researchers working in the ATI.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is a delivery partner for the UK Government's Newton Fund . The Newton
Fund is part of the UK's official development assistance . Its aim is to develop science and innovation
partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare of developing countries .
The Newton Fund was launched in 2014 and originally consisted of 75 million each year for 5 years . In the
2015 UK Spending Review , it was agreed to extend and expand the Fund . The Newton Fund was extended
from 2019 to 2021 and expanded by doubling the 75 million investment to
150 million by 2021 ,leading to a 735 million UK investment to 2021 , with
partner countries providing matched resources within the Fund .
Under its remit as a delivery partner of the Newton Fund , the Academy has
partnered with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry
(FICCI) to enhance research and innovation capacity within Indian
engineering universities through the Higher Education Partnership ( HEP)
programme . The HEP Programme will improve engineering education within
universities in India through supporting bilateral industry-academia linkages ,
using the premise that increased linkages between industry and higher
education can improve quality and foster innovation within the pedagogy and
practice of

engineering .This will then enhance the employability of

graduates and encourage technology transfer into industry .
