Programme Structure and Description

Attendance System

1) Admission and Progression

All registered students are eligible to enter the Programme. Their entry level depends on their
linguistic ability. The in-house placement test will determine the English language level of each student
and his or her placement is decided accordingly. This means that not all students will be required to
take the three levels. Some may progress through the Programme much faster than others depending
on the results of the Placement Test.

2) Programme Structure and Description

Three English language levels are offered and students are placed according to their linguistic
ability. In each level, students will learn and practice the four language skills: writing, reading,
listening and speaking, along with study skills, in an integrated manner. Students will take 12
hours of general English and 8 hours of technical English every week.

Note:

Students will have the chance to further their knowledge and improve their level using the
resources available in the Centre, like the library, and through active participation in students
activities. Students are also strongly advised to make use of learning resources outside the Centre,
such as public libraries, the internet, and the media.
The Programme is offered on a semester basis. The academic calendar is divided into 2
semesters each semester consist of (16 weeks). Students can refer to their Course Tutor for further
details on the academic calendar of the Centre.

3) The Assessment System

The English Foundation Programme applies the following assessment system

The Continuous Assessment (course work) is allocated 50% of the cumulative grade. This is
divided as follows: 2 progress tests (20%), Mid-semester test (20%), and an oral exam (10%).
The final level exit exam is allocated 50 % (12.5 % for each skill).
The Cumulative Grade is calculated as follows: Cumulative Grade (CG)= 50% Course Work + 50%
Level Exit Exam (LEE) = 100%.
To pass a level, a student must pass both the Level Exit Exam and the Cumulative Grade. The pass
grade is 50% and above .
