Worksheet #1

Crossing the road the Roadstar way

Walking to school safely is a great way to see your friends and neighbours while you get some
exercise. Roadstar has some rules to help you on your journey including how to cross the road
safely.
When using any form of crossing, whether it is traffic lights, zebra crossings or a pedestrian
refuge island you must REMEMBER TO:
1. STOP at the kerb.
2. LOOK right, look left and look right again.
3. LISTEN for vehicles coming your way (cars, trucks and buses).
4. THINK before you cross the road.
5. Wait and CROSS the road when it is safe.
Crossing the road can be tricky. Always cross the road at a safe crossing point.Until you are 10
years old you should cross with an adult. If there is no marked crossing, dont cross near the
crest of a hill or a bend in the road. You wont be able to see all the cars coming!

Ask your parents

Question: when you walk or cycle to school with Mum or Dad, count how many roads you cross
together.
Answer:

There are four kinds of pedestrian crossings

Do you go for green?
Traffic lights
Traffic lights help make it safe to cross a road. Push the button, then step back from the kerb as
you wait for the green man or walk sign. When the green man or walk sign appears, check that all
cars have completely stopped and then STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK before you walk
carefully across the road. Do not start to cross if the red man sign is on or flashing.

Can you hear a whistle?

Supervised children's crossing
When you come to a supervised childrens crossing you should stop at the kerb and watch the
crossing supervisor. When the crossing supervisor blows their whistle twice breep breep - you
can cross the road. You should cross in a straight line between the red and white poles. If the
crossing supervisor blows the whistle once for a long time breeeeeeeeeep you must get off
the crossing quickly as it is not safe to cross.

Do you cross on a zebra?

Zebra crossing

A zebra crossing is marked white lines on the black road. If you cross on a zebra crossing, make
sure drivers can see you before you cross. STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK before and during
crossing the road - dont start to cross until the traffic has stopped for you. Walk dont run and
look out for traffic as you go.

Will you travel to an island?

Pedestrian refuge island
A pedestrian refuge island is a safe stopping point in the middle of the road. When you use a
refuge island, you only need to cross half the road at a time. Be sure to remember to STOP,
LOOK, LISTEN and THINK before you walk to or from a refuge island.

Roadstar's tip for cyclists

When riding your bike, get off your bike before crossing the road and wheel it across.
