CE201IU Mechanics of Materials 1

International University- VNU.HCM

1. Name of course: MECHANICS OF MATERIALS 1

2. Number of Credits: 2
3. Level: 2nd year student
4. Time allocation:
- Lecture: 2 hrs/ week
- Lab: none
- Homework, Assignment: 2 hrs/ week
5. Prerequisites: Calculus 2, Engineering Mechanics Statics.
6. Course Description:
Internal loading, axial force, shear, moment, and torque in structural members; stress,
strain, and stress-strain relations; mechanical properties of material; strain energy; torsion
of circular shafts; bending of singly symmetric beams.
7. Overall Educational Objectives/ Learning Outcomes:
-To develop an understanding of the relationship between loads applied to a deformable
body and the internal stress, strains and deformation.
-To develop analytical and problem solving skills.
-To show proficiency in the matematics and basic sciences riquired to solve structural
engineering and mechanics problem.
-To demonstrate the ability to organize, approach, and solve engineering problems that
are multi-step problems in which the solutions are not visible at the beginning of the
process.
8. Student responsibility
Student is expected that you will spend at least 4 hours per week studying this course.
This time should be made up of reading, working on exercises and problem, group
assignment and attending class lectures and tutorials. University regulations indicate that
if students attend less than 80% of scheduled classes they may be refused final
assessment. Regular attendance is essential for successful performance and learning in
this course, particular in view of the interactive teaching and learning approach adopted.
9. Course Assessment Policy:
- One midterm exam: 30%
- One comprehensive final exam: 50%
- In-class quizzes, class participation and learning attitude: 20%
10. Textbooks and Other Required Materials:
R.C. Hibbeler, Statics and Mechanics of Materials, SI edition, Prentice Hall, 2008.
