SILVER LAKES GARDEN CLUB

MINUTES FROM JAN. 18,

2017
1. The meeting was called to order at 3pm by Peggy Shereda.
Attendance was taken and is attached.
2. Margaret W read the minutes from Nov. 13, 2016. They were approved
by Jolene and seconded by Chautzie.
3. Chautzie gave the Treasurers Report in Joanne's absence and a copy is
attached. We have a current balance of $3855.25.
4. Reports:
a. Bake sale: Peggy reported in Joyce's absence. Our first two sales
gave a profit of $161 and $163, respectively. Fancy cakes and pies
continue to sell best and the aprons really show up nicely. Walking
through the crowd with a tray of desserts was very successful and
may want to be tried again. The schedule was distributed and filled
in for the rest of the season.
b. Watering Schedule: new schedules were emailed to all members
and extra copies were distributed. Bags have been upgraded. Each
one has a flexible hose, nozzle and sprayer for fertilizer. Please open
the water spigot slowly so the hose doesn't rupture. If you are not
available when scheduled, please let your leader know and she can
decide if you need to get a replacement or not.
c. Social/Membership: we had a wonderful welcome back social at
the Bisonic home on Tuesday. Thank you Kathy and Committee.
Fakahatchee State Park was presented as a tour option for March
7th. The cost is $25. A sign-up sheet was passed around. Kathy gave
a demonstration of a garden club website that she has developed.
All members are encouraged to become familiar with it as it will be
a great way to communicate garden club information. The web
address is: www.slgardenclub.weebly.com.
d. Education: Gail reported that the committee has four programs
planned for this season. The first, on container gardening, was
presented on Tuesday and 70 people attended. Future programs are
on Feb. 14, Feb. 24, and March 14. She also reminded us of the
gardening books that are available on the marked shelf in the
library.
e. Public Relations: Jolene discussed some ideas for keeping the
Garden Club in the forefront.
f. Memorial Garden: Gloria reported that 18 bricks were added last
season. The forms have been updated and are easier to follow. They
are on the SL website and will be given to Nicki in the office. There
will be an article in Coffee Notes soon reminding people of the
program.
g. Raffle: Peggy thanked Joan for running the raffle this year in Mel's
absence. The raffle grossed $755 and the winner was John Stansell.

h. Major Event: Diane Schmaus reported that our event is on March 4

and will be an elegant dinner show starring Las Vegas Legends by
Jimmy Mazz. She discussed ideas for food and decorations and
several members volunteered to help. Much more to come!
5. Old Business:
a. Trash cans: Margaret stated that the trash cans should be
delivered this week and passed around a picture of what had been
ordered. Dominique will think of how we can label them as donated
by the Garden Club.
b. Front Entrance: Peggy stated that the Board has approved phase
one of the project which will begin next summer. There is a large
rendering of the plan on an easel at the Silver Club House.
c. Doris Marderness was presented with a family membership to
Naples Botanical Gardens as A thank you for tending our flowers
this summer. She was most appreciative.
6. New Business:
a. Work groups for planting: Volunteers were asked for to purchase
and plant the flower boxes at the guard and starter shacks. Gloria,
Kathy, Margaret R., Maggie and Vicki offered and will do them soon.
Margaret and Peggy will see what else needs to be done and get a
work group together.
b. Wall art at pools/ sale: a vote was taken regarding replacing or
using the Mexican pieces. The majority would like to see a change.
Margaret, Peggy, and Jane will go shopping and see what is
available. If something is found, we will have a sale soon.
c. Aprons, bags, and hats: everyone is excited about the articles that
Dominique has, so generously, provided. She has donated her time
and talent, only charging what she had to pay. Members picked
either a ball cap or visor. Don't forget to wear them when you water.
Those not in attendance can get one at the next meeting.
d. Next meeting: Monday, January 30 at 4pm at the Diamond Club
House. If this day and time works, we will meet every other week at
that time and should be able to keep meetings to an hour!
7, The meeting adjourned at 5:07 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Peggy Shereda
