Appeasement is giving in to the demands of a hostile subject in order

to keep peace. This can happen even if the demand is unreasonable or

unfair just out of fear. Appeasement can occur during war, when somebody
is trying to maintain peaceful at all costs. After being appeased, the
aggressor can do two things: They will either keep their word, or they will
take what they were given and more, and ultimately lie to the subject
attempting to keep peace. I have not found one example in history where
appeasement really worked. Even if it didn't make the aggressor more
aggressive right away, the impacts of it seemed to last and eventually leave
the aggressor wanting more than they had asked for to start. For this
reason, I believe that appeasement always makes the aggressor more
aggressive.

One example of appeasement was the Munich Agreement, when Hitler,

Mussolini, Daladier, and Chamberlain signed the Munich pact, giving the
Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia to Germany. British Prime Minister, Neville
Chamberlain agreed to this to achieve peace, as Hitler demanded it. But,
Hitler took much more than he had asked for. Soon, Germany took control
over all of Czechoslovakia, and a ton of its resources. By the time Britain
declared war on Germany, the Germans had already taken control over
Norway and Denmark. In this situation, Hitler took advantage of the
appeasement, and became even more aggressive.

Another example of appeasement was when France and Britain signed

a treaty with Germany which allowed them to rebuild the German military
and exceed their Naval limits, set in the Treaty of Versailles. They did this
because neither country had recovered from World War One, and although
they didn't want to allow Germany to break the Treaty of Versailles, they
wanted to prevent more war. It ended up backfiring, as Germany built up its
military and World War Two began.
A final example of appeasement in World War Two when Germany
invaded the Rhineland (remilitarization of the Rhineland), which was also in
violation of the Treaty of Versailles. German military forces entered the
demilitarization zone, which was a region in western Germany, bordering
Belgium, France, and part of the Netherlands. This also violated the Locarno
Treaties. Hitler thought that western powers, Great Britain and France,
wouldn't intervene, and he was correct. While they didn't exactly hand Hitler
the power to keep peace, they just let him invade Rhineland.

While appeasement may seem like a good idea because it attempts to

keep peace and compromise, it has proven to end up disastrous. If the

subject asking for something makes you fearful, then they are probably very
aggressive, and will continue to want more. Appeasement is what started
World War Two. Germany invaded Poland, something nobody gave them
permission to do. To conclude, appeasement is meant to prevent things like
wars, but often does the opposite, which is why I believe that appeasement
makes an aggressor more aggressive.
