610A - The Arm of Flesh
Be strong and courageous, be not afraid, nor dismayed for the King of
Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than
with him.
With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and
to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah,
King of Judah.
II Chronicles, Chapter 32
In these two verses you have summed up all of our lesson of last night, all of the lessons that
we've had through the week, through this week, and all of everything that I can hope to bring out
as realized consciousness in all the days to come with our students. It is all summed up right there.
The people of Hezekiah were of course threatened because the King of Assyria was on the
warpath, and with great forces, great forces, so much so that it looked as if Hezekiah and his
people would be overwhelmed. As a matter of fact, the King of Assyria had sent word that there
was no use of your trusting in your God. All the other peoples in these countries had trusted in
their God, but I and my father have overcome them all. Your God can't help you, and they had
proved that that was true in all these other casesthe God of these people had not been able to
help, and the King of Assyria and his forces had prevailed.
And so it was just before the battle that Hezekiah called his people together, and here is the
import of his message. With him, with the enemy, is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord, our
God to help us, and to fight our battles. All of these other cases where the people had prayed in
some way or other to God, they had also used and depended on material resistance, material
force, material power, so that they divided their allegiance between their faith in God and good
strong armies.
And of course in the end, they were all defeated, because as General Wainwright said a few
weeks ago, as is published in Collier's Magazine, when he was asked if he believed in God, he
said, Certainly, God is always on the side of the biggest battalions. Now, as long as armies or
nations fight on that basis of belief, you can see that ultimately they will be defeated. They will
have their peace for a long, long while, because with their superior forces it is natural that with
both sides depending on the same power, the one with the greater amount of it will win.
That has been true in our national experience. Up to the present time the United States has
never lost a war, and they have always presented to their enemies greater material power than the
enemy was able to muster. This time I read in the paper that we are to lose our first war. We are to
ask for a truce. We are to give the enemy that which they had in the beginning, and what they've
asked for right along, and so, with our lack of superior force, it will be a stalemate. Well, that may
be a forerunner of other things that lie before us.
In this passage, however, we have an entirely different note than merely presenting to the
enemy bigger armies, bigger fortresses, bigger planes, and bombs than they have. Here you have
an entirely new note presented. With him is an arm of flesh. With him is material force and
material power. With him is all of the strength of man, but he doesn't mention his army. With us is
the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And as the story goes on here later, most of
you are probably familiar with it; the armies of the enemy disintegrated right in their own face,
they even killed their own king. They just fell back on themselves and broke up. And this fellow
who presented no arm of flesh, but presented the Lord our God, he was victorious.

1951 Second Portland Series

To us, as truth students, there is no more important piece of scripture than this, because we
are dealing with exactly the same situation in our individual experiences that Hezekiah met for his
people, as a national experience, and probably one of these days we will be faced nationally with a
situation where someone will have to rise up and say, We have won victory with our armament,
now we have known defeat with our armament, perhaps we too might fall back on the Lord our
God instead of the arm of flesh.
But not to anticipate, let us come back to our own individual experiences. In this world you
can fight your battles with the weapons of the world. You can fight disease with medicines and
with surgery. You can fight sin with will power or psychology or a lot of human thought, and you
can fight lack and limitation by struggling in the human world to work harder or longer hours or
save more money. You can use the weapons of the world in your personal experience, in every
direction, or you can say, No, the world has only an arm of flesh to send against me.
That is, they have germs and they have infection and they have contagion. The world has
unemployment or depression. The world has the wrong or the right political forces, as the case
may be. The world has temptations of the flesh. The world has all of the hypnotism of this misuse
of newspapers and radios and television, all of these things meant for our destruction, all of these
things aimed at our destruction, and we have the choice of fighting them, or we have the choice of
resting. Resting. It says the people rested themselves upon the word of Hezekiah. Just think, they
rested upon words in the face of armies with armament. They rested upon the word. Now we can
rest uponnot wordswe can rest upon the wordthe word. Let us take the word as it comes
to us from the greatest Master of history, Christ Jesus, and find that He that is within me is
greater than he that is in the world. That is just a paraphrased statement of this one of Second
Chronicles: With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord, our God.
Within us, within this kingdom of God, within us is something greater than infection,
contagion, hate, enmity, jealousy, resentment, fear, lack, limitation, depression, temptation, so
forth and so on. Within us is that which is greater than any of these so-called forces in the world.
Those who see this in a measure, must begin withI don't like the term, but I'm going to
have to use self-discipline, in this sense, that whenever a temptation assails us, the temptation to
feel pain, the temptation to be sick, discouraged, fearful, doubtful, lacking, limitedwhenever
these temptations assail us, we must refute it with the realization that that is only the arm of flesh.
That is only a material danger, whereas I have within me that which is greater than that which is in
the world, and I will rest in that word. I will rest in the consciousness that He that is within me is
greater than he that is in the world.
Material sense always matches error with error, evil with evil. It fights fire with fire. Material
sense always uses the weapon of the enemy; only it tries to use it a little more vigorously. Spiritual
sense says put up thy sword. Those who live by the sword will die by the sword. Can you imagine
that? Put up thy sword. Those who live by the sword will die by the sword. Stop fighting
materialism with more materialism. Stop fighting matter with matter. Stop fighting lack of money
with the desire for more money. Rest in the word.
We have been given a scripture that embodies within itself such treasures of truth, really the
pearl of great price, running all the way through from the Old Testament into the New Testament.
And of course, those who study the testament, the wisdom or scripture of other nations will find
the same scripture, the same pearls embodied in other scripture that we have in this. But we have
it here. We have it all, and we need only turn to it for the words or the word or the consciousness.
Now spiritual sense will tell you quickly that the moment you relax in the word, the moment
you no longer set up a defense, you no longer have an enemy. Somewhere in the New Testament
the Master caught the vision of that when he said, Resist not evil. Most people are very busy
resisting evil, and thinking of it as virtue. He said, Resist not evil, and he confirmed it in his

610A - The Arm of Flesh

hour of danger by saying, Put up thy sword. Now to us, in this work, there is never a resistance
to sin, disease, death, lack, or limitation. There is never even a mental resistance, a mental fighting
of it. Rather, on the other hand, there is a complete relaxing in the realization, Yes, but that's only
the arm of flesh. That's only a material force that isn't a force at all. It isn't even a power. Love is
the only power. The word of God or Truth is the only power. The Infinite Invisible, the kingdom
of God within me is the only power. These words of Hezekiah are really power. They're power for
you. Swords aren't power. Guns aren't power.
We had an experience in Hawaii. In our little swimming group we go out with these Japanese
goggles, and swim under water, and of course, the formation under water is even more beautiful
than the scenery above water. There the magnificent rock formations and coral formations and
dens and places where fish abide plentifully. Well now, we go down there and we swim right along
with the fish, or rather they swim along with usschools of themsometimes one, two, or three
fish, and sometimes a hundred and fifty at a time. And they'll swim right under us or beside us, and
sometimes come up and rub our legs. They have no fear. They have no hesitancy, and never yet
have I seen one of these fish run away from us, except when someone probably made too big a
splash or too deep a splash and it frightened them.
But, ordinarily we have learned to swim on top of the water and also to swim under the
water, and to do it so slowly and easily that we don't even disturb the water, much more the fish.
And so we really have a wonderful time down there with fish that are so beautiful that you just
want to look at them for minutes and minutes and minutes at a time, and some of those tropical
fish are really beautiful.
Now the strange thing is thisno, it isn't strangebut the thing is this, that when these
natives down there go out spearing for these fish, they have to chase them all over the bottom of
the sea. They can't get them to stand in any one place and wait to be caught or speared. No, the
minute the fish are aware of their being on the scene, they scurry. Now, that is the same thing that
has been found in animal lifethat the moment you come armed, the moment you come in a
protective sense against an animal, it will jump at you. Why? It isn't afraid of you. It is afraid of
the fear that it feels in youthat protective sense, that self-preservation businessthat's what it's
afraid of. And it is going to strike you before it can be struck, or it's going to run out of danger
before you can get up to it. That is the normal, natural response in the fish world and in the animal
world.
Well, I want to tell you it's the same response that you will meet in the human world. Let me
illustrate that for you. When a salesman goes into a business house to sell, the conditions are the
same now as when I was a salesman, the buyer immediately puts up a defense. The first thing is,
Oh no, I don't need any. The first thing is No, and there is that defense, and the salesman is
supposed to break down the defense, and there's a reason for it. The salesman is in there to sell
something, not to be concerned whether the buyer needs it, not to be concerned whether the
buyer needs it today. That salesman is intent on one thing, making a sale. I'm speaking of the
average salesman in ordinary selling, the intent is to make a sale. And that buyer, who may not
need that today, or may have some other source for buying it, that buyer knows that the salesman
is out to get him if he can, and automatically that mental defense goes up, and the buyer says no.
When I was in the business world a firm that I represented sent me to Pittsburgh, and told me
I was to take that for a year, and I called on a buyer in the biggest department store, and the first
thing she said after I introduced myself was, No, she didn't need anything.
And I said, Well, of course, you don't know me, so would you mind if I explain a little bit
about myself? I said, I have to come here in accord with my contract for a year, and that means
twice a month for about nine months out of the yeareighteen times, and that each time I'm
going to come in and call on you.

1951 Second Portland Series

If you say to me, No, I don't need anything, Ill either walk out, or talk to you about
something else, but never will I say, Will you reconsider, or I have something or other, and she
looked at me and said, You'll never make good as a salesman. You know, a salesman's work only
begins when the buyer says no.
And I said, You've met an entirely different type of salesman. I know what I have in my
trunk. I have a marvelous line of merchandise. It's as important for the buyer to have it as it is for
me to sell it, and it is up to the buyer to know that, so I will offer it with all the love in my heart,
and if the buyer doesn't want it, that will be all right with me, too.
And that lady, that year was my biggest buyer in my entire territory, because she came to
realize that I was telling her the truth. I valued what I had in my trunk, and I knew it was good,
and I knew it was good for her, may not be good today, may not be good every time I came
around, but it's a good article, and sometime or other it should be good, and on that basis I
worked.
If a salesman were to go into a business house in the realization that I have a fine product,
and if you need it, or if you need it today, it is available to you, if you don't need it, or if this is not
the right time for you, I hope God will give you the wisdom to say no. If a salesman would
proceed with that atmosphere, with that sense, the buyer could never put up a wall of resistance,
because there would be no opposition coming from the salesman. There would be no force of
being on the make, of trying to get, so there would be nothing to defend themselves from. There
would be a sense a buyer would feel that that salesman was not coming in there to make a sale,
but to be of service, to be of service either by selling or not making a sale.
Now, we have the same conditions throughout life, since we're all salesmen. Never think for a
moment, that any one of us is not a salesman. We are, in one way or another. Every one of you is
a salesman in some way, and in some form. Supposing I were to stand up here and in my mind, in
my consciousness were the thought of what I am going to get from you. You know what would
happen out there? A wall would go up. A wall would go up, and you'd be on the defensive, and
you'd be holding on to your purses, and you'd be holding on to your minds even, for fear that I
might take something from there.
Oh no, there's only one reason that we have this kind of a flow going on in here. You know,
and you knew before you came in here, that the one on the platform was not seeking anything
from you, but was seeking rather to share that which came from the Father, to share that with
you. You knew that before you came in here. And it was true. There's only one purpose in being
on this platform, and that is to share.
And in the same way, you did not come here to get anything from me, or you would have
shut off the supply. When you came here, you knew it was a truth lesson, and you know that the
only one who can teach truth is God. The only one who can reveal truth is God, so you had no
thought of the speaker except as a vehicle or as an avenue. What you are attuned to was the
message of God.
And now I want to tell you something. We can love each other unreservedly. We have no
defense against each other for only one reason. We don't want anything of each other or from each
other. We are all here for one purpose, to receive of God and to share it with each other, and it is
for that reason that you couldn't stir up a lawsuit or a battle in this room. But you see why. Each
one of us is attuned to God. Each one of us is reaching to God for our needs, and not to each
other.
If you carry out that principle in your human affairs, try it with your family, your business,
with every other relationship in life, realizing that it is your oneness with God that brings you your
good, and that you are not looking to man whose breath is in his nostril for anything, except the
opportunity to share whatever of good you have. That's following up what we said this morning,

610A - The Arm of Flesh

isn't it? If we could face this world, if we could even go out to the department store to buy our
clothing, or to the grocery store to buy our groceries, with the idea that we're going out, not to
get something, but to exchange or share something.
If we could turn to every even going to a bank to make a loan, with the understanding that
we're not going there to get a loan, but to bring about an equal exchange, since the bank has to
make loans in order to live, therefore, loans on their part are as important as loans on the
borrower's part. But, when the individual goes and they're thinking they're going to get something
from the bank for their end, they shut off that supply. When they realize that this is a mutual
exchange between me and the bank, through which both will benefit, they won't be cut off, ever,
never.
Every one of our relationships must be based on not fighting, not using the weapons of the
world, not trying to get from each other, but share with. This sounds idealistic and transcendental,
but be assured it is the most practical thing there is in all the world. It is the most practical,
because the moment we release the other fellow, the moment we release him from being a victim
of our desire to get from him, we enable him to be free in his own spirit, without being completely
on the defensive, and then they can act naturally and be natural.
The truth student is training himself to depend completely on the Lord, our God to fight our
battles, whether the battles are physical, mental, moral, or financial. He is learning, more and
more, to rely on the Iinfinite Invisible, the kingdom of God within his own being. And in
proportion as he does that, he withdraws his gaze from men and women, and stops thinking of
men and women as people from whom, or even through whom, he must get, and in that release,
we find harmony.
Be assured of this, you know that it's true, that we cannot fight with each other, and the only
reason is that there isn't a possible thing in this room that we have to give each other or to get
from each other. Every bit of supply that I ever will need in my days can come to me from the
Father. It may come to me through humans or it may not. I have enough confidence and faith in it,
that if it were necessary, it would fall from the sky as manna or be brought to me with the ravens
or multiplied as the loaves and fishes.
And therefore, when I stand before my students I stand in the attitude of, Let us come
together and share that which the Father gives us of truth. And in that way we are not dependent
on each other. We're dependent on the one Source. And so with my students, they quickly realize
that they don't even lean on me for truth, that they come to me, and we share the truth that
unfolds from the Father, and in that relationship we are a very, very happy family, a very happy
family. None of them are dependent on me, and I'm not dependent on one of them, but always we
share in this relationship.
Now this same thing takes place when we go into hotels or into the railroad or airplane office
for accommodations. As long as we're going in there, not with the idea of getting, but with the
idea of sharing, of releasing, we find that available which is necessary to our experience at that
moment.
Now, the Master used the term I have meat that ye know not of. I have said this: that we have
soul faculties. We have a soul. As a matter of fact the correct way to say it is, We are a soul. We
are the soul, or the soul is our being, but we have soul faculties.
We have something greater than seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling. We have a
developed consciousness or awareness, and we can make things without seeing them, hearing
them, tasting them, touching them, or smelling them.
We can make things through this inner faculty, call it soul faculty, or call it soul
consciousness, or spiritual consciousness, but through it we can know things that the human brain
can never know, and in the same way I bring this to your attention. There is a soul power within

1951 Second Portland Series

each of us that can work out every problem of our existence, whether it be physical, mental,
moral, financial, marital. There is a soul faculty, a soul-power within us, and its purpose is to work
out our destiny. Its purpose there is to work out our problems. That is its purpose within us.
It is that very thing that Hezekiah called the Lord our God. It's the very thing that Jesus
called the kingdom of God, or My Father. My Father doeth the works, and My Father is where?
The Father, he said, within me. I call It the Infinite Invisible or the soul faculty. These soul
faculties know my need before I do. These soul faculties, being spiritual, omnipotent, and
omnipresent go before me to make the crooked places straight, to draw unto me my own, to bring
into my experience fulfillment. I Am come that ye might be fulfilled. I Am come that ye might be
fulfilled.
Let us say I. I, that I at the center of your being is your Soul or Spirit, and Its faculties have
come, and are there that ye might have life, and that you might have it more abundantly. That I at
the center of your beingnot a man who lived two thousand years ago, and not a new messiah of
today, but I, say it, I, that I at the center of your being is God. That is the Christ or Messiah or
Savior. That is the presence and power of God in you, and Its purpose there is that you might be
fulfilled, that you might have life, and that you might have life more abundantly. And until you
come to the point of reliance on It, instead of on person, place, and thing you will never realize
that It can go out before you to make the crooked places straight, that It can arrange all of your
human affairs.
It can lead you to the buyers who need you. It can lead you to the sellers who need you. It
can lead you to the friends and relatives and patients and students who need you. It can bring into
your orbit, into your very experience, all those necessary for your fulfillment, and you never have
to leave your home unless you're directed. You never have to leave the place whereon you stand,
because even that place is holy ground, and your good will be drawn to you, or you'll be so driven
by this urge that you will be led to where you are to find it.
The secret is, first of all, in accepting the truth that God can do these things, but again
knowing that God is the I, I, I. God is the I at the center of your being. It is your very own Soul,
and It has faculties beyond those of seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling. It has an
activity of awareness which extends beyond the range of your five physical senses, so if that which
is necessary to your fulfillment exists in Africa at this minute, be assured that somewhere in Africa
the stir is being felt, and it is on its way to you. Or if it's in China or if its in New York or Chicago,
wherever that is, or rather, he or she is, necessary to your experience, the moment you realize that
I in the midst of you am mightyisn't that wonderful? I in the midst of you.
That I in the midst of you is mighty to the bringing down of strongholds, that I it is that is the
embodiment of all of the activities and faculties that you'll ever need, and It silently, secretly,
unseen, unheard, is all out in the world, all over the world, bringing to you that which is necessary
to your fulfillment.
Do you know that as a tree stands in the ground and the roots underneath, that same power is
drawing into the roots just the very minerals or vitamins or foods or elements or substances that
that particular tree needs. If it is an orchid plant, then that life force is drawing into the orchid root
just the elements that the orchid needs, but if it is a daisy, It is drawing into it just those things that
the daisies require. Why this is infinite Intelligence that can so discriminate as to bring unto each
flower, each fruit, each vegetable just the elements that they need, and in just the amount that they
need. And the Master says, if God can do that for the sparrows, can't he do it for us?
If only we had that same reliance on the Infinite Invisible, on the I of our being, on our Soul
force, our Soul faculties, you can be sure It would draw to us just the elements and substances
necessary for our harmonious and complete unfoldment. Instead of that, we try to be humanly
wise, and decide that we know who we want, and when we want them, and we know what we

610A - The Arm of Flesh

want, and we also know when we want it, instead of a resignation in the great truth, in the great
realization: All that the Father hath is mine. All that the Father hath is mine and then allowing
that I at the center of our being to draw it unto us.
Q: We're asked a question here. The meaning of this, Rise, let us be going, and behold he is
at hand that doeth betray me. Is that the one? Rise, let us be going, and behold he that is at hand
that doeth betray me.
A: That goes back to the whole long story of the betrayal, and of course, it would apply in
our individual experience as we are divinely led, as we are divinely inspired, we too know those
thoughts in our mind, or those temptations that beset us, that would, in the last analysis, betray us.
There isn't any one of us that hasn't temptations within our own being that would betray us,
whether we call them Judas, or whether we call them animality, or covetousness, or whether we
call them mad ambition, we have that within us that would destroy us. And of course, we'll never
know about it until we're destroyed, unless through spiritual intuition we are told: Watch out for
that fellow, that's your Achilles' heel. That's your weak spot. Drop it away. That will harm you.
We exist as consciousness, but just as Jesus embodied within his consciousness a Judas to
betray him, and a Peter to deny him, so do we have within our being, that which, if we're not
careful, will deny us at a critical time, and even betray us. But through spiritual discernment,
through a complete reliance on this Father within, the moment the betrayal comes, we look out
there and say, One of you has a dagger up your sleeve, and then we'll learn how, we're taught
how to avoid it, if the experience is to avoid it, and in the case of the Master, the experience was
not to avoid it, but to demonstrate its powerlessness.
Jesus knew what Judas would do, but he also knew that if he accepted crucifixion as
something to be feared, he would be giving it power, and so he knew that for the final
demonstration, he must show the world that even the strongest arm of flesh, crucifixion or the
dagger or the atomic bomb isn't power, and so he's willing to go through the experience to
demonstrate the powerlessness of the arm of flesh.
Q: Well now, we have here a question on meditation, and I can only answer that by saying
that in the First San Francisco Lecture Series, June, 1948, you have the whole treatise on
meditation, practice it along that line, and if any further help is needed, write to me, and whatever
help I can be, I will be very glad to be, to anyone wanting to go further in meditation. Of course,
when it comes to our class work that is one of our major activities. In our class work we meditate
never less than twice, sometimes three and four times in a session depending on how we're guided
and directed.
Q: Well, this is a question I answered yesterday, Where does error come since God is all in
all?
A: Of course, error doesn't come because error doesn't exist. Where does two times two is
five come from? There isn't any. No matter how many times it presents itself to you, please know
and until you prove it to yourself, take my word for itin the whole history of the world there
has never been one single two times two is five, never, never, never.
No one has ever discovered anywhere under this blue dome, one single two times two is five.
Can't be found, and so, from that stand point, let me say this to you, Jesus Christ, in his entire
ministry, never found a sin or a disease or a death, because every time he came into the presence
of an appearance of it, the appearance quickly got up and ran away. It dissolved. It disappeared.
And so I say to you that in the presence of any degree of spiritual consciousness there is no
such thing as sin, disease, or death. They never have existed any more than two times two is five
existed, and when you see them or experience them, remember you are only seeing or
experiencing the same thing you do when you get two times two is five in your check book, just a
little error of belief. And as you recognize that you're not dealing with an entity or identity, but

1951 Second Portland Series

rather with a belief, you will find the way to make that thing, which isn't a thing, disappear.
And I might take a few minutes, right here, to caution you about that word illusion. In
metaphysics we say that the sin or the disease is an illusion, and still, I wish you could know how
many letters I receive saying, You know this illusion still stays with me, and I can't get rid of it.
You know, all there is to treatment, all there is to healing work, is the discernment that the socalled condition exists as illusion, after that you don't do something to it or think something about
it or treat it or try to get rid of it.
The Hindu's have wrecked their entire country, and their entire health and their entire wealth
and freedomthey've lost their freedombecause of a misunderstanding of the word illusion.
If you ask the average Hindu about illusion he will tell you that this material world and this
material body are illusion, and that someday you must put them off or get rid of them, and that's
how India has been wrecked.
You know the nature of an illusion? An illusion doesn't exist out here. You can't get rid of
something out here that has no existence out here. The illusion exists as a mental misperception.
Now, let's look at the car tracks that come together. That's an illusion, isn't it? Can you get rid of
it? Can you send a gang of workmen out there to move those tracks?
Where is the illusion? In your thought, and how are you going to get rid of it? Your
recognition that it's an illusion is that which gets rid of it. There's nothing to do after that. Your
acceptance of disease as illusion is the treatment. Now don't try to do something to the illusion.
In the same way, even in metaphysics, you will find metaphysicians trying to treat the illusion
or get rid of it out there on their bodies. In isn't on their body. Never has there been a disease in or
on the body. Never, never, never. It has no existence there. If it ever had, there never would have
been a metaphysical healing from the very first day, because nobody that I ever heard of in the
metaphysical world has ever tried to cure a disease in the body or on the body, because it isn't
there.
The disease exists as a belief about a body, and it exists only in thought. It's a misperception
of that which is there. That is one reason why, in the message of The Infinite Way, every book that
I have written has a long chapter on the nature of error. Why? Not to frighten you about error, not
to make a lot of error, but to bring home the real nature of error which is non-existent, if nonexistence can be said to have a real nature.
Don't you see that there is no disease in the body, and there's no disease on the body? Where
would God be if there was a disease also? What would you think of an infinite God, good, that
permitted disease? There is no disease. Disease is merely a belief that we, in our atheism, in the
centuries of atheism that we've had: the years, the centuries of atheism before Jesus Christ came
on earth, the years of atheism before Buddha, and Lao Tzu revealed the truth, and the years of
atheism since 300 ADthat is what constitutes our diseases. Thats atheism. That conviction that
if there is a God, it's something unknown up on a cloud up there, and with a lot of praying to It,
we'll get help. That's atheism, and that atheism constitutes our disease.
The disease is not a condition of body. There is no disease in or on the body. If there is, there
is no God, good. You can't have an infinite God, good, and an infinite Power of good, an
Omnipresence of good, and have disease, can you? It just doesn't make sense even humanly, much
more spiritually.
Then what of disease? According to all metaphysical teachingdisease can only exist as a
belief, as a temptation, as an appearance, as an illusion, and where can those things be? In belief,
in thought, not in the body and not on the body, in thought. What dissolves them? Not using the
arm of flesh, not using physical power or mental might; a reliance on the word of truth dissolves
them, the reliance on the Lord God Almighty that fights our battles, that dispels our illusions, and
they rested in the words of Hezekiah.

610A - The Arm of Flesh

If we were to rest in the words of Jesus Christ, whom we take as Lord and Master, if we
were to rest in the words of Jesus Christ as the Hebrews rested in the words of Hezekiah we
would find the enemy fighting itself and destroying its own king. We would find the diseases of
the flesh destroying themselves, if we would stop the battle.
Because I know this: Joel can't heal, but the Lord God Almighty in the midst of me can, and if
I can open my ears, open my consciousness, so that the presence and power of God can be made
visible and manifest. It will open the Red Sea. It will make manna fall from the sky. It will make
the sins and the diseases of the body to disappear.
Joel can't, but the presence of God appearing as Joel can, but Joel must get out of the way, let
his consciousness be the arena, and let the activity of God do the work, and that's done in silence.
And that is the major part of treatment, even if you use the first half that I outlined to you, even
then your work isn't done until you have completed the second halfget quiet, rest in the word.
Let your consciousness be the arena, but rest, rest and let the word of God come through.
There is one of the hymns of Mrs. Eddy's. I was just thinking, I will listen for Thy voice, lest
my footsteps stray. Some of you, perhaps, remember it. I will listen for Thy voice, lest my
footsteps stray. You see, the moment the voice of God comes in, even if it isn't a voice, if it's a
sensing of the presence of God, the footsteps can't stray, the ill health can't remain, the lack and
limitation can't remain, because you can't have the presence of God and error. And so if there is
error or discord in your experience, you haven't a conscious awareness of the presence of God,
and there's only one way in which you'll get thatsilence, silence. You must be still and let the
presence of God come through.
Q: Please say in a few words in regards to Mrs. Eddy's meaning of reflection.
A: I can't do that because Mrs. Eddy had in many places in her writings a wrong concept of
reflection, which she corrected in another. In one place she says that reflection is like your image
in a mirror or in the water, but in another place she says definitely that she does not mean that by
the word reflection, that it has nothing to do with an outward image, that reflection means more
like reflex thinking, in this sense: When I'm thinking of God I'm reflecting on God, and that's not a
reflection out there, but my thinking on God reflects itself in harmony outside. Reflection is a very
difficult word to understand unless you can see this: that whatever it is that's in my consciousness
is right now reflected on my face. That's how I understand reflection. Well, you see the sinner, the
dissolute liver, walking down the street, their state of consciousness is reflected on their face. We,
however, are not reflections. You are not reflections.
You are Soul. You are Spirit. You are life eternal. I'm quoting from the Master: I Am the way,
the truth, the life. I Am the resurrection. I Am life eternal, and you're nothing less than that.
Q: The explanation of the glass as a tumbler is very clear to me illustrating God, the
substance of all form. I can understand the dust on the tumbler as being super-imposed, but I'm
still unable to understand God as the substance of a bomber or as a gun or as any of those things.
A: There you have this: Whatever it is that appears to our sense as evil represents the human
misconception or misperception of that which is divine. When dynamite was invented, it was not
invented for gun powder. It was invented as a blasting instrument to take up big roots and move
rocks. It was man's misuse of dynamite that put it into gunpowder.
When atomic force was experimented with, it was not expected to be used for destructive
purposes, but to run the world. I can remember back more than twenty-five years when I read that
someday we were going to have atomic power, and that one thimble full of it would power an
ocean liner to Europe and back for an entire year's trip. That was the hope of atomic force.
In our misconstruction we have misused these things, and it has nothing to do with God. The
substance of all form is God, even of atomic power. It is our misuse of it and misperception that
causes the evil, just like money. There's nothing evil about money. It is the fact of our hugging it

to ourselves as if it were supply, as if it were necessary.

It is the very same thing that has sprung up in some of the metaphysical work on the subject
of human love. My God, you would think that human love was a sin or a crime. You'd think that
marital love was something to be ashamed of, instead of the most magnificent experience in all the
history of the world, when love is its foundation. There's nothing wrong with human love. The
wrong is in the misuse of it, in the abuse of it, in the using of it for physical pleasure instead of the
divinity of two souls becoming one.
There's nothing wrong with any phase of human existence, except man's perverted use of the
divine energies and the divine wisdom and of the divine powers on earth. Let us learn this: God is
the substance of all form, and everything that is is beautiful and harmonious, only let us not
pervert its use. It's like our being here together.
We're here together to share in the unfolding of God, and the moment we would use this
coming together for some purpose, some selfish or personal motive, why we would have knocked
this whole meeting into a hat, and destroyed its use and purpose, while our being here together is
being consciously one in the presence of God. Who now would want to turn around and
commercialize that or take advantage of it or exploit it? If they did, it would be an abuse of the
love of God that has drawn us here together. Is that clear?
I thank you.
We have a question here, Will the closed class in January be held in the evening so that
business men may attend? Yes, it is an evening class, and not only is it an evening class, but I will
call your attention to the fact that it is ten consecutive evenings: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. There are no breaks in it,
and those who plan to attend should so arrange their time that there will be no necessity for them
to take a breaknot to be away Saturday, not to be away Sunday. This is one occasion that
comes before family ties. This comes before duty; this comes before anything because it concerns
your religious welfare. It concerns your seeking and finding the kingdom of God within your own
being.
It should be an occasion on which, if necessary, you could travel many, many miles as you
will learn that many will do. People will be here from New York, from Toronto, California,
Chicago, and probably as far away as Australia or London.
Our classes have brought people from all corners of the globe. And if they can do that, and
spend weeks and weeks of time, and in some cases a thousand and more dollars for that, you must
realize, that if its worth anything to you, it is worth your giving up these ten evenings.
And even a little bit more than that, because after the sessions at night, there should be
occasion in your home for more study and meditation before retiring. There should be some
opportunity during the day or before coming in the evening so that you do not come in rushed,
and lastly, everyone should arrange to be in their seats between 7:30 and twenty minutes of eight
since we require at least fifteen to twenty minutes of quiet meditation.
You know now, that if there is a secret in this work, it lies in meditation. Whatever secret of
success there has been in this work is due to meditation. Why? Because in that quietness, in that
stillness, in that calmness, you can meet God. God is not in the whirlwind; God is not outside in
the storm and tempest, God is in the still small voice.
And so, if we hope to make that contact, to achieve that conscious oneness with God, it must
be in the depths of the silence of our being, so I say to you that this class work to which I dedicate
the best part of my life, and from which I had all of my hopes for the success of the work, let it be
as sacred to you as it is to me, and all of us will come through the experience richer.
