BELOVEDS IN CHRIST Sing the body old,

translucent,
cartilage giving way,
body getting closer to the earth,
ready for planting.
Sing the body frail, bent,
curved by winds which now
all blow in one direction.
Sing the mind translucent
like the skin
revealing gnarled memories.
Sing the beauty of the old ones time,
where the present is selective,
the past sublime;
where the future holds all promise,
and holds the end of time.
Sing the beauty in the body old,
a beauty the old ones sometimes
cannot see,
but all who love can sense:
the beauty of the weathering,
the standing for:
the browned barn against green
summer fields.
(The Revd Dr.) Mark Harris (poetmark1940@gmail.com), beloved friend
and colleague since seminary days, published Sing the body old in Plumbline,
a journal of ministry with higher education for which I wrote and he edited
in the l970s when we were both in our 30s and in l984 in Good Hope
Poems. Now we are in our 70s and Mark has been diagnosed with cancer
and me with a litany of orthopedic challenges. For me, 2016 will be the
year I got old!
When you read this I will be recovering from decompression of the cervical
spine (neck) surgery on January 26. I anticipate recovering well as I have
from reverse right shoulder replacement last October. There are at least
three more surgeries I will need before my body can be as strong as my
spirit continues to be.

PREPARING (AND
PRAYING) FOR CHANGE

he late Presiding Bishop of the

Episcopal Church, Edmond Lee
Browning, reminded us in his book A
Year of Days that God is present in the
midst of change. Change can be painful,
as growth is painful some of the time.
With Peters upcoming retirement (see
his adjacent column), we will need to
prayerfully remember this as over the
upcoming months we execute an orderly
transition to our next rector.
Fortunately, the Diocese of Los Angeles
has a well-ordered process to help us
make this happen.
The Rev'd Canon Joanna Satorius,
Canon for Formation and Deployment for
our Episcopal Church in the Diocese of
Los Angeles, serves as a consultant to
congregations preparing to call new
leadership. She will be here at Saint
Michael & All Angels on February 19,
2017, the 7th Sunday after The Epiphany,
to help us begin the search process.
Joanna will assist with worship at ten
o'clock, then lead a program she predicts
will last two hours. Please plan to attend
as we plan for our new beginning.
For the Parish
Almighty and everliving God, ruler
of all things in heaven and earth, hear
our prayers for this parish family.
Strengthen the faithful, arouse the
careless, and restore the penitent.
Grant us all things necessary for our
common life, and bring us all to be
of one heart and mind within your
holy Church; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.

serious. It contains many short prayers
that can help persons dealing with a
life-threatening diagnosis. Some
examples include prayers For Each
Day Before Treatment Decisions,
During Chemo, Thanks for Life,
For Doctors and Nurses, For
Peace, and For Others. The
Prayers for Joy is special: The

chair, coaxing the sun to warm my pain
just a little longer. I smile. I sense
your Holy Presence. I am not afraid.
Your are nigh purring. Amen.

UNITED THANK OFFERING (UTO) is a

ministry of the Episcopal Church for
the mission of the whole church.
Through United Thank Offering,
men, women, and children nurture
the habit of giving daily thanks to
God. These prayers of thanksgiving
start when we recognize and name
our many daily blessings. Those who
participate in UTO discover that
thankfulness leads to generosity.
United Thank Offering is entrusted
to promote thank offerings, to
receive the offerings, and to
distribute the UTO monies to support
mission and ministry throughout the
Episcopal Church and in Provinces
of the Anglican Communion in the
developing world.

FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE

FEBRUARY 2017

Rectors Desk from page 1

So, I intend to retire mid-2017. Ideally, we will
celebrate the 50th birthday of our parish, Saint Michael
& All Angels, on the Birthday of the Church, Pentecost,
June 4, at 9am and that will be my last Sunday as your
rector. Then for me, the balance of June will include
cleaning out my office after twenty-nine years and seven
months and celebrating Farewells!
As I anticipate no longer doing full-time what I am
confident I am meant to do on earth in this body-bound
chapter of eternal life, Gods great humor is crystal clear.
Overall, for 44+ years of ministry in Holy Orders, I
have been able to support myself and family by doing
what I love to do, what gives me joy. And specifically
when I arrived in l987, I was told that our first rector,
(The Revd) John Rogers Davis, retired at age 60 after
leading this parish for almost twenty years because of
severe problems with his back. I responded impetuously,
Twenty years is too long, Ill be here eight to twelve,
and my body will be fine when I leave. Silly me!
Reflection on successes and failures will follow
before Pentecost. I set only one goal when I arrived; as
you can read on page 14 of Saint Michael & All Angels
Corona del Mar: A Celebration of 50 Years.
Within months, the rector spoke openly of wanting a
60/40 balance in the parish expenditures budget
targeting 60 percent to support mission activities outside
Saint Michael & All Angelsand he found himself
overjoyed when this goal was adopted by the Vestry in
l988 and then by the annual meeting.
However, the best we have done is 33-67, onethird of our parishs Program & Budget going toward
serving those who are not our members. Some would
say this is a failure, but by my sabbatical time in 1995
I realized my goal was unrealistic and said so here. As
always, I continue to hope and pray that we will become
more-and-more mission-minded.
As for successes, I can honestly say that I have
pastored, taught/preached and administrated to the best
of my ability, the limitations of which I am well-aware.
In particular, I am proud to have shared with our
parishioners my friendships with Dr. Mark Miller, Rabbi
Emeritus and Senior Scholar of Temple Bat Yahm, and
Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi, Imam at the Islamic Society of
Orange County. Friendships among children of Abraham
& Sarah and Hagar seem to me to be more critical than
ever in this twenty-first century.
My attitude of gratitude continues for, as the great
General Thanksgiving on page 836 of our Book of
Common Prayer puts it,
... for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of
love for the blessing of family and friends, and for
the loving care which surrounds us on every side for
setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and
for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and
delight us ... (and) for those disappointments and failures
that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you
alone. Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus
Christ . . .

Those who know me well will not be surprised that

my attitude as I sing the body old and prepare to retire
is well-expressed in the most famous poem by my
favorite Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, written for his father
while Thomas was in Florence with his family in 1947:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Yours, In Christ -

PRAYERS

A Memorial to Frances Fukuda

and her Ministry

HEALING

It has been a month since our dear

friend and fellow parishioner,
Frances Fukuda has passed away.
I wish she were here. I miss seeing
her slipping in the doors of the
church at ten minutes past and
making her way to the back right
hand pew to join the friends who sit
in the same place every Sunday.
Seeing her good morning smile. Her
space is empty and I can feel the
loss. And then there is the dark
brown wooden chair situated at the
end of the bookcase in the Davis
Library. This is where she use to sit
for Sundays at Nine. It is empty, too.
I wonder what she would have
thought about our Epiphany dinner.
I miss crossing paths with Frances
in the Saint Michaels parking lot as
she was coming to yoga class and I
was beginning my work day. And I
would often see her in the sanctuary
toward the close of the day and the
end of the week, putting together the
flower arrangements for the
upcoming Sunday. I wondered what
she would have thought about how
long the poinsettias lasted. I know
that she mentioned to me that the
flowers last Christmas were not the
best, and she would make plans to
find better ones. And that she did,
for this year s poinsettias were
stunningly beautiful, each red leaf
expertly shaped like the next. The
hand of God was in this work and
the works of God were in Frances
hands.
In each session of Confirmation
classes, I like to have the youth tour
the sanctuary. We look at the stainedglass windows and we consider the
icons and altars in the church. I
particularly like to have the youth
take notice of the altar flowers.
Frances knew how to purchase
flowers that would be meaningful
and contribute to the liturgical
calendar. Her careful attention to
and maintenance of the plant, called
The Crown of Thorns was done
throughout the year, ready for its
placement on the altar in Lent. The
orchids on the back altar, Frances
lovingly looked after. She gently

Frances Fukuda
continued from page 4
would take away whatever blooms that
had fallen down. This work of
Frances has always spoken strongly
to me of the joys of the Episcopal
tradition. Whether it is flowers or art
or incense or musical expression, God
is glorified and one can sit in the
sanctuary and see and hear and smell
and touch and taste the wonders of
Gods love in the created world. And
it is in the working with the forms of
this created world that parishioners are
behind the scenes using their gifts and
talents-doing what they love and sharing
it with one another.
Frances shared her love of flower
arranging with us.
During this month of February, when
many thoughts of love and kindness
and appreciation are shown, and hearts
of love and flowers are symbols, I
wanted to remember Frances. I emailed
Frances granddaughter, Katie Fukuda
and asked her if there were thoughts
she would like to share with us. She
said, If theres anything Id like people
to remember about my grandmother, it
would be on how full and lively a life
my grandmother led. She really was
young at heart, with her yoga and her
travels and her busy social life. I
also found that Katie had written a
lovely post on social media tribute to
Frances. I asked if she would let me
print it and she said, yes.
My Dear Grandma,
I miss you beyond words could say.
Your beauty, charisma, your grace is
missed by all. The church could barely
fit all those that have been touched and
loved by you. We will miss hearing
about your adventures and travels. But
I am glad you have a new wonder to
travel to. May God be with you in
eternal life. I take comfort in knowing
you will be with Grandpa again. I know
you missed him very much. We miss
you both. But never will you be
forgotten. You will forever remain in
the hearts of those you have graced
with your smiles and laughter. You are
an amazing grace.
Love forever, your granddaughter

The Saint Michaels Episcopal

Preschool board unanimously agreed
that the experience of wonder in Godly
Play is something we want to emulate
and build on. This decision led us to
quickly embrace a Reggio-inspired
preschool curriculum.
Reggio-inspired schools view
children as driven by curiosity, with
tremendous observational skills and an
ability to form strong theories about
the world around them. Reggio
teachers believe that when children
share their wonder with other children,
with their parents or with teachers,
they engage in a richer and deeper
learning process. Parents are seen as
partners and are a vital part of the
school community. The Environment
is the third teacher. The design of
time and space encourages
communication and relationships,
autonomy and organization.
Learning is made visible to parents,
teachers, children, and visitors in the
classroom through documentation
inside a portfolio of each childs art,
writing, scientific exploration, etc., to
further support observation,
reflection, and understanding.
Children speak through 100
languages is a basic principle of the
Reggio Approach. Preschoolers
construct their own knowledge by
working with a variety of materials.
Through clay, paints, mosaics, paper,
blocks, woodworking, wire, and
recycled objects, children can explore
ideas and theories on their own and
with the group.
An example:
Child: Why is the sky blue?
Adult: Hmmmmm, great question.
Why do you think its blue?
The child shares her ideas and her
response gives the teacher insight into
how that child thinks.
Adult: Those are very strong ideas
(and she files that away to return to
later). What else do you notice about
the sky? Is it all one color of blue? Do
you see anything else?
Child: No, its darker there and
lighter there. It has clouds. That cloud
looks like a dinosaur.
Adult: I see that too. How could you
share your thoughts with others?
(drawing, writing, clay, wire, etc.)

This is the beginning of independent

inquiry. A child wonders, observes,
conjectures, and discovers answers,
which leads to further investigations
and a love of learning. Just like the
wondering in Godly Play, this type of
learning doesnt have a gold star
outcome. Wondering is different
from asking Socratic questions,
which lead to the answer sought by
the teacher. Wondering is different
from asking factual questions, which
have specific right or wrong answers.
Wondering has no wrong answer.
In school, when group wonder is
guided by teachers using provocations
and questioning rather than handsoff demonstrations and telling,
children connect to the topic, gain a
confident voice, and learn to be part
of
a
learning
community.
Conversations sparked by one idea add
more questions and theories to the
conversation, increasing the groups
knowledge base, and leading to more
questions. Children in a Reggioinspired school learn there are multiple
ways to express an idea--whether it
be visual, verbal, written or through
movement and music.

CORNELIUS THE CENTURION

First Gentile Convert to the Christian Faith
A Centurion was commander of a company of 100 men in the Roman Army, responsible for its discipline, both in the
field of battle and in camp.
A Centurion was a Roman citizen, a military career man, well-paid, and generally noted for courage and competence.
Some Centurions, such as Cornelius, from what we know from the Gospel narratives, were men of deep religious piety.
The author of Acts considered Cornelius' conversion very momentous for the future of Christianity. He records that it
occurred as a result of divine intervention and revelation, and as a response to the preaching of Peter the chief apostle.
The experience of Cornelius' household was regarded as comparable to a new Pentecost and it was a primary precedent
for the momentous decision of the apostolic council in Jerusalem a few years later, to admit Gentiles to full and equal
partnership with Jewish converts in the household of faith.
According to tradition, Cornelius was the second Bishop of Caesarea, the metropolitan see of Palestine. Undoubtedly,
Cornelius and his household formed the nucleus of the first Church in this important city, a church that was gathered by
Philip the Evangelist.
