Cameramans Journal

Role:
I had a key role in the filmmaking process. I had to capture every single
shot in the short film. I had to take care of all the movement of the
camera and also juxtaposition of shots. A role which was assigned to me
was to make sure that whenever there is a filming session taking place I
had to make sure I booked out all the necessary equipment needed for the
filming day. I had to work closely with the director so that I could clearly
display the directors vision. I also came up with alternative angles and
shots which made the appearance of the short film better and I also
helped make the film flow smoothly through the use of the shots. I also
had a hand in the editing process where I told the editor which shots were
best to use and which shots were just experimental and shouldnt be used
in the final product.
Filming:
The camera which I used for filming was the canon 700D DSLR. I was very
familiar with this camera as I had used it to film for media studies in the
previous year. I was very confident in using this camera and I rejected the
opportunity to use the newer model, the canon 70D. This made sure that
filming was done quicker due to the reason that I was quite experienced in
using the canon 700D. I learnt how to use the focus pull on
the camera to the best of my ability. This was used in
my final product during the revelation of the drugs
scene and it was pulled of very well.
Problems which were encountered:
A major problem which occurred was the factor of the
lighting. During our first few filming sessions we had a lot
of problem with film grain and noise which appeared in the film.
Our draft product we had grain all throughout the film so that meant that
we had to scrap the film idea. In order to remove some grain from the film
I booked out lighting equipment and screens to make sure that we got rid
of most of the grain. Even after doing this there was still some grain in the
final product. We also made sure the lights in the room was very bright
and we made sure we did this by using new bulbs in order to make sure
we had fresh lights. This had to be in every single room which we filmed
in. We even had to change location due to the dark lighting which was
inside the house at the first location.
Extra Notes:
After completing the filming I learnt how to pull off many different creative
filming techniques and I also was able to practice and better myself on

specialist techniques such as the 180 degree rule, match on action and
also the rule of thirds. I was also able to master the use of the tripod
which in the previous year I had difficulty using.
