SHIP DIMENSIONS

Hull: The structural body of a ship including shell plating,

framing, decks and bulkheads.
Afterbody : That portion of a ships hull abaft midships.
Forebody: That portion of a ships hull forward midships.
Bow : The forward of the ship
Stern : The after end of the ship
2

Port :The left side of the ship when looking forward

Starboard : The right side of the ship when looking forward
Design Waterline (DWL) or Load Waterline (LWL) : The waterline
at which the ship will float when loaded to its designed draught.
3

Forward Perpendicular (FP) : The vertical line at the point of

intersection of the LWL and the forward end of the immersed part
of the ships hull.

After Perpendicular (AP) : The vertical line at the point of

intersection of the LWL and the centerline of the rudderstock.

Midships (
) : The point midway between the forward and after
perpendiculars.

Centerline (CL) : A straight line running from bow to stern,

midway between the sides of the ship.

Baseline (BL) : The horizontal line parallel to the design waterline,

which cuts the midship section at the lowest point of the ship. The
vertical heights are usually measured from the baseline.

SHIPBOARD MEASUREMENTS
LENGTH
A ships length is measured in different ways for ships officers,
for architects and designers, and for registry. Terms used for
technical or registry purposes include registered length, tonnage
length, floodable length, and length by ABS (The American Bureau of Shipping)
rules.

SHIP DIMENSIONS
SHIPBOARD MEASUREMENTS
Length Overall (LOA)
A ships LOA is measured in feet and inches from the extreme
forward end of the bow to the extreme aft end of the stern.

10

SHIP DIMENSIONS
SHIPBOARD MEASUREMENTS
Length Between Perpendiculars (LBP)
A ships LBP is measured from the forward perpendicular to the
aft perpendicular.

11

SHIP DIMENSIONS
SHIPBOARD MEASUREMENTS
WIDTH
A ships maximum breadth, commonly called beam, is measured
in from the most outboard point on one side to the most outboard
point on the other at the widest point on the ship,

12

SHIP DIMENSIONS
SHIPBOARD MEASUREMENTS
DEPTH
The vessels depth is measured vertically from the lowest point of
the hull, from the bottom of the keel to the side of main deck.

13

SHIP DIMENSIONS
SHIPBOARD MEASUREMENTS
Freeboard
This is the vertical distance, measured at the ships side, from the
waterline to the top of the main deck edge. The freeboard
measurement is taken at the midships point.

14

SHIP DIMENSIONS
SHIPBOARD MEASUREMENTS
Draft-Draught
The vertical distance from the waterline to the bottom of the keel
is called the draft.

15

SHIP DIMENSIONS
SHIPBOARD MEASUREMENTS
The relationship between the drafts at the bow and stern is the
trim. When a ship is properly balanced fore and aft, she has zero
trim or on even keel. When a ship is drawing more water forward
than aft, she is down by the head.

16

SHIP DIMENSIONS
PROCEDURE FOR READING DRAFT MARKS
Loadlines/Plimsol numbers/Draft marks are numbers marked on
each side of the bow and stern of the vessel. Draft marks show
the distance from the bottom of the keel to the waterline.

SHIP DIMENSIONS
LOADED DISPLACEMENT is defined as the mass of the ship
including cargo, passengers, fuel, water, stores, dunnage and such
other items necessary for use on a voyage, which brings the ship
down to her load draft.

SHIP DIMENSIONS
DEADWEIGHT TONNAGE
The number of tonnes of cargo, stores etc. that a vessel is capable
of carrying when floating at her load draught is deadweight
tonnage (DWT).

21

SHIP DIMENSIONS
GROSS TONNAGE is defined by the measurement of the total
internal volume of the ship in cubic feet, divided by 100 cubic
feet.

Total volume of all closed spaces (ft3)

100 ft3

22

SHIP DIMENSIONS
NET TONNAGE is the remaining volume value after the
following volumes have been deducted from the gross tonnage
which do not directly effect the profit making.

8Accomodation and navigational spaces

8Ballast
8Water tanks
Net tonnage is the
8Fuel tanks
volume used for cargo.
8Water pumps
8Pump rooms in tankers
8Engine rooms and boiler rooms
