PETALING JAYA: The Kelantan Forestry Department detained 16 more orang asli
and two freelance journalists on Tuesday at the blockade site in the Balah forest
reserve, near Gua Musang.

According to lawyer Siti Kasim, who represents the orang asli, enforcement
ofcers moved in on the Matau Cawas blockade near Pos Bihai and dismantled it
while detaining the orang asli who have been manning the blockades in
Kelantansince last September. The orang asli were later released.
Five orang asli who were arrested on Monday were released early Tuesday.
"Today they have arrested the ones from Pos Bihai. Sixteen (orang asli) were
arrested as far as I know.

"Can't tell you much more. They are still inside so we're waiting for them to come
out," said Siti.
The two detained journalists are believed to be freelance television journalists.
Siti anticipates that the department's next move would be the remaining blockade
at Pos Pasik but access to the area was difcult due to a bridge that collapsed
from the heavy rains.

This comes just a day after the ofcers demolished a blockade at Simpang Petei
where the ve orang asli were arrested.

at the Department's ofce in Gua Musang on Monday.

The blockades set up by the orang asli to protest against logging in the area have
been the site of previous confrontations between the them and the state
government as well as loggers.

In November last year, the blockades were dismantled and dozens of orang asli
were arrested although they were later released.

Despite this confrontation, the orang asli later rebuilt the blockades.
Last week, a magistrate's court in Gua Musang ruled that "the orang asli arethe
ones with the rightful occupation and actual possession of the land".
While the decision only applied to land in Pos Balar, it did not determine exactly what
rights the orang asli had over the land.
