Newspaper timeline

The gutenburg printing press


October 30th 1447
The press allowed ideas to be shared quickly and was the start of the newspapers we have
today.

Regular newspapers
April 1st 1609
Germany, France and Great Britain began the first to publish the first modern newspapers.
They had information about corruption and evil in their own countries. The fist newspaper
published in Europe was Avisa Relation oder Zeitung
from Germany.

Americas first newspaper


December 19th 1690
This newspaper was published in Boston it was called Public Occurrences, it was not
authorised and was quickly discontinued, the publisher was arrested and all the newspapers
were destroyed. It wasnt
until 14 years later that
another newspaper was
published.

The daily current


March 11th 1702
Was the first ever daily newspaper and was published in London, inside the Daily Current
there was foreign intelligence that had been taken from foreign newspapers. It went out of
business in 1735.

Sweden protects the freedom of the press


May 5th 1766
Sweden passes a law to protect the freedom of the press they were the first ever country to
do this.

The first daily newspaper in America


July 18th 1784
The Pennsylvania Packet was founded in November of 1771 and was delivered three times a week. It
became the first daily American newspaper in 1784.

African American newspapers


June 21st 1827
The first African American periodical was Freedom's Journal, founded by Samuel Cornish and John B.
Russwarm. Many of the African American papers spoke for liberation and rights, demonstrated racial pride,
and informed readers of

events affecting the African

American community.

A penny per paper

August 26th 1833


In New York, 1833, one penny would buy a newspaper. This helped to open up the mass market for
newspapers.

Bigger machines
September 3rd 1850
In the 1850's the first large and powerful printing presses were invented, allowing ten thousand complete
newspapers to be printed in one hour. Also during this time the first pictorial weekly newspapers were
founded. These

pictures were

usually made from

wooden

engravings of an

artist's sketch.

First Ad
November 10th 1867
The first ad in a newspaper appeared in 1867. It was a double Colum ad for Lord & Taylor a department
store.

Linotype
December 5th 1886
Ottmar Mergenthaler invents a linotype composing machine. This machine allowed one person to do many
various news printing jobs, such as; type-setter, type-founder, justifier, machinist, and type- distributor. This
machine was first used by the New York Tribune in 1886.

First photo in a

newspaper
November 24th 1890

The first photograph appeared in a Dutch newspaper in February of 1890. The photograph was of The
Amsterdam theater burned down.

Newspaper numbers drops


April 14th 1940
Newspapers numbered about one for every two adults before the 1940's. After the rise of television,
newspaper numbers dropped to one for every three this may not seem like a big drop but it is. However the
rise of television did not end the popularity of the newspaper.

Newspapers go online
February 27th 1990
At the end of the 1990's more than 700 newspapers had their own websites. This allowed more information
to be accessible to more people.
