1.What is quality?

Quality does not have a universal standard, and consists of achieving or

surpassing customer expectations. Quality is applicable to products,
services, individuals, processes, and surroundings. It is a continuously
changing state, for example what is considered good quality today may not
be good tomorrow. This can be due to new technologies or advancements in
designs. Quality is easier to be seen or felt, than to be specifically defined.
The way in which a product or service fills the requirement of the consumer
can also differ.

2.What is TQM?
TQM is an acronym for total quality management. It is a business method in
which calls for optimal competitiveness via continual upgrades. This is
achieved within processes, services, people, environment, and the quality of
a product. The total quality management technique consists of a strategic
baseline, focus on the customer, strive for quality, the scientific approaches,
commitment overtime, high levels of efficient performance, and working as a
team.

3.How can we achieve organizational excellence with quality?
If set about and implemented in the appropriate manner, the total quality
management approach can guarantee optimal level of efficiency within any
organization. Achieving a certain level of value requires the best quality, cost
and service. An organization can focus in on problems and fix them, as to
allow all processes to work seamlessly. Top quality is always high on the
priority list to achieve overall organizational excellence.

4.What is the Deming cycle?
The Deming cycle was developed by W Edwards Deming, and it is a 4 step
model for continuous quality improvement. The cycle came about as a way
to bridge the production of a product with the needs of a consumer. It
specifically focuses on an organizations resources used to meet such needs
of a customer. The 4 steps are as follows: plan, do, check, and adjust.
Planning consists of defining the problem, performing market research,
identify causes, and determining the most efficient solution. Doing is simply
implementing the previously determined solution. Checking is observing the

implementation of a solution, and gathering data as a result. Adjusting is

necessary if results do not match anticipated outcomes. The adjustment
requirement is determined as a remedy to achieve sought after results.

5.What are the most common errors when starting quality initiatives?
There are many common errors that occur when starting quality initiatives.
One of them has to do with the senior management hierarchy. Proper
leadership is necessary to ensure all members of the team are actively
involved and working efficiently to maintain quality standards. Another
common error involves the establishment od corporate structure and culture.
Employees must be knowledgeable and understand how to properly work
together as a team. In order for this to happen supervisors must be
knowledgeable on how to lead and serve as a coach. The deployment
process can have errors when the creation of quality initiatives is not
mapped out with appropriate plans. Plans must be in place to ensure proper
integration of a quality process into the organization. Another source of error
is taking the wrong approach on applying total quality management plans.
What this means is that every organization is different, and all propositions
must be tailored to fit each unique organizations need. There is no one fits all
approach on this matter. Additionally, there could be confusion among the
terms education, awareness, inspiration and skill set building. All employees
must be provided the appropriate education to acquire the necessary skills to
take part and implement a quality plan.
6.Explain the cost of poor quality.

The cost of poor quality is determined by the costs of a low quality product or
service. This means that if something is not executed in the appropriate
manner the value of doing incorrectly the first time is the cost accrued. The
costs associated accumulate between the time of producing the desired good
or service, and the cost of a lost opportunity trying to ameliorate low quality
conditions. These can include, but are not limited to, customer returns,
waste, rejection, testing, inefficient use of time, pricing errors, billing errors,
unused resources, inspections, freight costs, complaints, expediting services,
lack of follow up, customer allowance, planning delays, etc.

7.What are the quality characteristics of a world class organization?
Quality characteristics in a world class organization consist of the use of
world class analysis, which then include cost efficiency and time efficiency.
Forecasting and collaborative planning are used in production and supply
chain management. Customization to each unique organization is also
universal in world class organization. Features necessary, such as ecommerce, is a quality of needing organizations. Employee compensation
incentives also allow for individual efforts to be rewarded and allows for
better production qualities. There can also be different divisions set up,
which have expertise and can follow through on each of these areas in the
most efficient manner (but not limited to): Customer service, quality control,
research and development, new technologies and innovation, teamwork,
planning, environmental, alliances and partnerships, reengineering, mergers
and acquisitions, consulting, political involvement.

8.Responsibility and total quality.
Accepting responsibility for a product or service in every aspect is considered
ethical behavior. It seems as though lack of ownership on failures due to
issues that can be avoided is becoming more and more common these days.
In an organizational total quality setting, each department or individual is
responsible for all of their shortcomings. Peak performance and execution is
always anticipated, so appropriate accountability must be set in order to fix
and prevent in the future. The integrity a company holds is very valuable to
customer retention. Consumers must feel an overall trust and security when
choosing an organization to work with and/or consume products from.
9.Discuss some models for ethical quality decisions.
There are many models for making ethical quality decisions. The categorical
imperative model shows value on what is ethically right and what is ethically
wrong. There are no gray areas here, everything is black and white. The full
disclosure model considers things to be ethical when it satisfies the values of
all stakeholders. The doctrine of the mean model considers the middle
ground option to be the ethical option. The golden rule model is based
around, Do unto others as you would have them do do unto you. This
approach also takes the values of stakeholders into consideration based
around ethical decisions. The market ethical model trusts that in the end, all
unethical behavior will be weeded out by legal action. This will then result in
only the most ethical products and standards being left in the market. The
organizational ethical model assumes that the most ethical interests are in
which best serve the organizations well being. An example of this would be
loyalty to the company. The equal freedom model allows for the organization
to do whatever they please, as long as it does not violate the rights of a
stake holder. The proportionally ethic model assumes that the good will
always outweigh the bad. This means that they want to keep a higher ratio of
rights and a are ok with a lower ratio of wrongs. The professional ethical

model states that all decisions are to be run through a board of peers for
review and analysis. There is usually some sort of set codes of ethic the
board should consider when evaluating the organizations decision making.
10.What is the engineering managers role in quality ethics?
Ideally, the engineering manager must set an example for ethical behavior,
which depends on the model the specific and unique organization is using.
They are to oversee and assist in the employee ethical decision making
choices. This involves promoting ethical behavior in the workplace to ensure
quality standards are being met. The manager is also responsible for
identifying non ethical behavior and rewarding behavior that follows ethical
guidelines. In doing so the engineering manager can take multiple different
approaches on how they want to approach their tasks. The best ratio
approach assumes that generally people are good and will follow ethical
behaviors. In some situations, they maybe tempted to be unethical, but it is
imperative that the manager set an environment in which the employee feels
a sense of encouragement towards being ethical. Under the circumstances of
indecisiveness, the manager must step in and make the decision to uphold
ethics. The black and white approach is when the manager knows what right
is right regardless of circumstances. The full potential approach s when
decisions are made under the consideration of how it will affect those
involved. The achievement of full potential is always sought, so there is no
infringement on the rights on others.

Dear Board of Directors and Stakeholders,
The purpose of this letter is to show the positive effects of running a fully
green and sustainable business organization. All measures necessary in
order to prevent any toxic waste or pollution to be unleashed into the eco
system, whether it be land, water, or air will be put into effect immediately.

All life on land, sea or air, must not be obstructed and at risk of extinction
due to the neglect of avoidable pollutants being generated by man. Please
refer to the above videos provided by Paul Ranky, in which show the
unspoiled eco system that we as inhabitants of this Earth must preserve.
Some factors that lead to the unnecessary depletion of the eco systems are
greed, incompetence, human error, and unethical neglect. There are
sustainable green, and eco friendly options that can be put into effect to
ensure that quality standards arent neglected, but also appeal to the
consumer. One way to start this transition is to use post consumer waste,
instead of aiding in the destruction of new and natural resources found on
Earth. Whenever possible, the use of paper product should be eliminated
entirely (go paperless), but when necessary recycled product may be used.
Biodegradable cleaning products can be used in the workplace, as they have
the same level of effectiveness without the harm. This is also beneficial to
employees well being because they will not be exposed to such harsh
chemical and toxins that can potentially harm their state of health. Compact
fluorescent, or LED lights can be swapped for incandescent bulbs. Not only
does this alternative light conductor last significantly longer, but it also uses
a much less amount of energy. Replacing old and outdated electronic items,
with new eco friendly options can not only put less strain on the
environment, but it can also save you on your monthly overhead energy
costs. Another consideration is to entirely run operations on alternative
energies, such as solar power, which there are many government provided
incentives on corporations for doing so. Using public transportation to work
can be less dangerous, more efficient, and least costly for employees. The
possibility of green online web hosting is also now possible. All of these
conceptual ideas, plus more, will save countless amounts of funds while
attracting more consumers as they become more education on eco
consciousness.
