7th Grade Unit 3: Expressions and Equations

Prerequisite Skills:

Understanding that a variable may take the place of an unknown value

Numerical Properties
Inverse Operations
Inequality symbols
Graphing an inequality on a number line

UNIT OVERVIEW: In this unit students will begin with extending graphing skills that were taught at the end
of 6th grade. Students will then dive into algebra. They will learn that a variable is used when a number is
unknown. The order of operations will be reviewed so that students can evaluate expressions. Students
will learn to solve for the value of a variable in an equation and an inequality using inverse operations.
Students will learn how to graph the solution to an inequality on a number line. Finally, students will also
be expected to be able to create expressions and equations that include a variable from a given situation.

Learning Target 1: I can generate equivalent expressions

Example
Translating written expressions to numerical
expressions

Learning Target 2: I can use the Identity and Inverse to write equivalent
expressions
Example
Using the multiplicative identity and additive
identity in order to create equivalent
expressions

Using the multiplicative and additive inverses

to create equivalent expressions

7th Grade Unit 3: Expressions and Equations

Learning Target 3: I can combine like terms
Example
Identifying constants and coefficients in order
to correctly combine like terms

Learning Target 4: I can solve one-step, two steps, and multistep

equations.
Example
Identifying inverse operations

Correctly applying inverse operations to

isolate a variable

Learning Target 5: I can solve multi-step real-life and mathematical

problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any
form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically.
Example
Using inverse operations to isolate a
variable when the equation involves
whole numbers, decimals and/or
fractions

Learning Target 6: I can solve word problems leading to equations of the

form x + = and ( + ) = , where , , and are specific rational
numbers.
Example

7th Grade Unit 3: Expressions and Equations

Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic
solution, identifying the sequence of the
operations used in each approach.

For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm.

Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?

Learning Target 7: I can solve inequalities.

Example
Using inverse operations to isolate a variable
in an algebraic inequality.

Learning Target 8: I can graph the solutions to inequalities.

Example
Using an open or closed dot to graph the
solution set on a number line

Learning Target 9: I can find the area of composed figures and circles.
Example

Learning Target 10: I can solve problems with scale drawings.
