Fig:2 Detail section of a single diversion wall

Now For the Long wall along the flow (considering the section A-A),
Total volume of earth filled gunny bags
So, no. of bags required per 850 m length of wall
[ it is assumed that 70% of the bags used for the 500 m long wall will be used for the adjacent wal
considering 850m wall length.]
Now For the Short walls perpendicular to the flow (considering the section B-B),
No. of intermediate walls per 500 m long wall
Total volume of earth filled gunny bags
So, no. of bags required per 850 m length of wall
So total no of gunny bags required per 850 m length of wall

Total Number of gunny bags required for full reach (0.00 -57.096 km)
Now total cost for Diversion Work involves the following phases1) Cost for supply, earth filling, sewing & laying for each bag
(As per Item No. 30, Chapter 21, Page No. 28, UPID SOR, Kanpur Commissionary)
So, total cost
(9.5*3647971)

2) Cost for shifting the previously placed bags by 2m - 3m at same chainage but changing the flow
( Here, only handling of earth filled bags are to be considered)
Let us assume, One person can handle and relay 40 bags per hour / 320 bags a day
As per SL. No.1, Chapter-1, Pg-3, UPID SOR, Kanpur Commissionary,
daily wages rate/labour
So rate for handling and laying bags in adjacent place for
Add 15% for contractor's profit
So, total cost =
(63.25*3647971)/100

3) Cost for moving 70% of reusable bags from the 500 m stretch to adjacent 350 m stretch by bull
It is assumed that 70% of Bags can be reused in next season and can be utilised in 70% * 500m le

So, Weight of one bag
So the number of bags that can be moved @ rate Rs. 118/Total cost for moving 70% usuable bags
[The cost include loading, unloading and stacking.]

4) Cost for shifting the previously placed bags by 2m - 3m at same chainage but changing the flow
The rate for this item will be same as Item no. 2
So, Total cost for laying earth fill bags in
(70% of 34655724.5)*63.25/100
adjacent 350 m will be,

5) Cost for the Disposal of the Bags by JCB Excavator

Rate for disposal with JCB is considered same as the rate given in Sl.No.-2(b), Chapter-3,
Pg-8, UPID SOR, Kanpur Commissionary,
Volume of bags to be disposed
Total Cost for disposal

6) Cost for dewatering from local pockets after closing the gate
Power of Pump

Length of the stretch
Assuming average depth of water inside the diversion wall
So,total volume of water to be displaced from local pockets after closing the gate as well
as the seeping water during construction
Assuming total number of 5HP pump provided
So required time for dewatering with 1Nos of 5HP pump
Hiring charges for 5HP Diesel Pump including P.O.L & Operator
(As per Lucknow Zonal Schudule of Rates, Irrigation Department UP)
So total cost of Dewatering

Time required to do the diversion wall

If the job is required to be completed in 3 years with no closure in canal from Month of
November to 15 th june Excepting closure of one month after Diwali and small closures
time to time by controlling the HR at 0.00 for construction of wall by earth filled gunny bags
Then the expected time requirement for non-excavation work, I,e for Diversion wall construction
is analysed.
It is assumed for management of the work following steps shall be followed.

1) The work will be completed in three years.

2) During construction from Mid october to mid June the supply has to be less and irrigation facility
can not be given as usual as the canal section will be halved in two parts.
3) The work will be splitted in two parts foe proper man & material management and execution.
4) each halve will again be splitted in 850 m segments where the diversion wall shall be constructe
for a legth of 500 m and remaining 300 m shall be constructed in next year by reusing the earth fil
70% of its existing volume i.e., work in this part shall be done with existing earth filled gunny bags
and no new one normally will be necessary though additional 15% gunny bags had been taken into
account.
5) same gunny bags shall be used in case of diverting the water in other direction at same chainag
canal. From left to right or vice versa.
6) The structure works shall be taken up simultaneously .
7) It will be targeted to come up above water level in first year of construction but if lagged in a pa
half for which the canal excavation is complete the it can be finishede with construction of ring bun

8) unlined canal excavation with cutting slope section must reach above water level in one period
of construction.
9) The work for IP and non-IP shall be second year of construction in that reach
10) In case of lining work shall be taken up with completion of earth work and to reach above wate
in the same working year. However proper compaction of side slope as bed of lining is essential.
11) The excavation work where necessary for widening shall be taken up with JCB or such excavato
shall be done with labours using section and level format.
12) The diversion wall considered here with construction with earth filled second hand gunny bags
job shall be done with unskilled and semiskilled labours.
13 ) Agency may choose diversion by sheet piles or any other suitable means as per his choice. In
estimate / tender the work has been considered with earth filled gunny bags but incase of otherv m
the agency shall make the rate with proper approval of the client's authority.
14) Diversion wall shall be completely removed at the end of work i.e., between october to decemb
in third working year to allow water to flow full section in third year and irrigation shall be available
early February in third working year.

Following above the principal activities will be

2) construction of labour camps and first aid centres within next 10 days.
3) Removal of shrubs and bushes by Dozers along with motor graders both of which shall also be n
for approach roads. This work should start by 3rd week of October.
4) Arranging gunny bags and dumping at sites from 3rd week of Octoberber and to complete by 3r
week of November for 50% work
5) Mobilisation of machinary from 10 th October within 3 weeks
6) Mobilisation of Labour from !st week of November and to complete by end of November.
( This time availability of such huge labour to construct diversion bund may be difficult
paddy harvesting season).
(Availability of labour also may be difficult for NAREGA works.)
7) The Head Regulators at 0.00 shall be closed by 4th week of October
and remain closed up to end of November.
8) Sundrying of Canal Bed for 5 days including pumping local pockets to complete
9) The Template for canal profile and bed level with CBW ( 1:6 ) shall start from 1st wee
end of November for each 500 m but full section of canal at 30 m c/c and two levels at c
If work is done by full closure then only two levels at corners and only one at center.
10) Construction of Diversion Bund from 1st week of November and to complete by 3rd
at all 500 m locations.
( Time analysis given separately )
11) Machine excavation to start from 1st November
12) Optimum water is released on end of construction of Bund by end of 3rd wk. of Nov
13) Earthwork excavation and shaping by labours by mid november
14) Completing canal in design shape by mid February
15) HR closed for 7 days after one side construction complete
16) The same wall to be displaced by 3m and internal cross walls to be completed on ot

17) Machime to work on other side after completion of the 1st side
18) Lbours to start work on other side from 3rd week of February and to complete by en

19) water will be released on 16 th June for full section the bags in position
20) IP work shall start from next year.

21) Lining to be completed with the completion of canal section after full compaction of
side slope including laying of Geotextiles and sand bed.
( Where lining necessary but not for 1st Tender of WAB).

22) Structure work to cvontinue with canal work and if necessary ring bund may be con
up to bearing level of pier & abutment .

Total volume of earth filled gunny bags
So, no. of bags required per 850 m length of wall
[ it is assumed that 70% of the bags used for the 500 m long wall will be reused for the adjacent w
considering 850m wall length.]

Now For the Short walls perpendicular to the flow (considering the section B-B),

[Theses walls are provided as stifeneres as well as a safety measure to prevent the work zone from
long wall fails]
No. of intermediate walls per 500 m long wall
Total volume of earth filled cement bags
So, no. of bags required per 850 m length of wall
So total no of cement bags required per 850 m length of wall
Total Number of cement bags required for full reach
Now total cost for Diversion Work involves the following items of works1) Cost for supply, earth filling, sewing & laying for each bag
(As per Item No. 30, Chapter 21, Page No. 28, UPID SOR, Kanpur Commissionary)
So, total cost
(9.5*1017230)

2) Cost for shifting the previously placed bags by 2m to 3m (as necessary) at same chainage to al
( Here, only handling of earth filled bags are to be considered)
Assuming, One person can handle and relay 40 bags per hour /
As per SL. No.1, Chapter-1, Pg-3, UPID SOR, Kanpur Commissionary,
daily wages rate/labour

So rate for handling and laying bags in

So, total cost =

(175/320)*100
Adding 15% for contractor's profit
(63.25*1017230)/100

3) Cost for moving 70% of reusable bags from the 500m stretch to adjacent 350m stretch
by bullock cart It is assumed that 70% of Bags can be reused in
next season and can be utilised in 70% * 500m length
As per Item. No.1, Chapter-II, Pg-2, UPID SOR, Allahabad Commissionary,
basic rate for carriage of materials/M.T
Again this rate has to be increased by 15% for canal service roads as per Item. No.1,
Chapter-II, Pg-2, UPID SOR, Allahabad Commissionary, rate for carriage of materials/M.T.
So, increment of carriage rate for canal service road will be by,
Therefore, rate of Transporting and moving of the requisite reusable Cement Bags
Vol. of one bag (1cft )
Density of earth
So, Weight of one bag ,
So the number of bags that can be moved @ rate Rs. 118/Total cost for moving 70% usuable bags
[The cost include loading, unloading and stacking.]

4) Cost for shifting the previously placed bags by 2m - 3m at same chainage but changing the flow
The rate for this item will be same as Item no. 2
So, Total cost for laying earth fill bags in
(70% of 9663685)*63.25/100
adjacent 350 m will be,

5) Cost for the Disposal of the Bags by JCB Excavator

Rate for disposal with JCB is considered same as the rate given in Sl.No.-2(b), Chapter-3,
Pg-8, UPID SOR, Kanpur Commissionary,
Volume of bags to be disposed
Total Cost for disposal

6) Cost for dewatering from local pockets after closing the gate
Power of Pump
Efficiency of pump set ()

Average bed width in this stretch

Length of the stretch
Assuming average depth of water inside the diversion wall
So,total volume of water to be displaced from local pockets after closing the gate as well
as the seeping water during construction

Assuming total number of 5HP pump provided

So required time for dewatering with 1Nos of 5HP pump
Hiring charges for 5HP Diesel Pump including P.O.L & Operator
(As per Lucknow Zonal Schedule of Rates, Irrigation Department UP)
So total cost of Dewatering
[Volume of water stored in each pocket of 500 m length
=
No. of 5 HP pumps required for total dewatering of one diversion chamber
If 3 nos of pump are allowed for dewatering, volume of water dewatered
So, time required for complete dewatering a diversion chamber using 3 nos. of 5 HP pump,

It is suggested to provide 3 nos. of 5 HP pump to complete the dewatering process within 4 hr so t

to ensure dry site condition]

7) Cost for dewatering the seeping water during construction

Assumed, 2 nos 5HP Pumps are used for dewatering of seepage water at every diversion chambers
These pumps are to be used for 10minutes at every 1hr interval. As, working hour is considered to
So, running time for two pumps at a single chamber will be,
2 X (8 X 10) minutes = 160 Pump-minutes/day
As, total no of working day (assumed) 14 months i.e., (14 X 30) Days
In 31.696 km of stretch, total number of diversion chambers
So, total Pump-Hour required to bail out seepage water in total stretch
Total cost of Dewatering of seepage water (considering the rate same as Sl. 6)
