The re-generated lake edge vegetation shall be removed to open up views through the plant growth to
create open lake edges. Work is essential to both edges of the lake to restore the setting and views and
as such shall be carried out in close liaison with Trent Country Park. Opportunities for bio-diversity shall be
entertained to enrich the aquatic and marginal flora. Boardwalks and viewing decks shall also be installed
with informative educational signage.
Reinstatement of the American garden with its views of the cascade shall be undertaken with the restoration
of the original planting.

Ice House Wood provides an important physical and visual boundary to the east edge of the North Lawn
drawing the eye to the lake and further northeast to the Water Gardens. The removal of Bevan House will
reinstate these views. Sassoons sequence of gardens from the Walled Kitchen Garden to the Water Gardens
via Ice House Wood shall be restored together will the re-instatement of the formal Lime avenue which was
lost at the beginning of World War 2.

managed for the future.

The key view from Wisteria Walk along the Long Garden to the statue at the rond-point was lost when the
Music Block was added to the Orangery. Removal of this block will restore this view and the rond-point will
be re-instated with focal feature as a significant component of this designed landscape.
The Long Garden is in a poor state of disrepair and is truncated with the addition of the Music Block.
However, with the removal of the Music Block Norah Lindsays Yew hedged enclosed herbaceous borders
will be re-instated to their former design intent.

network in the Country Park to the north. The boat house shall also be fully restored along the lake edge.

Integral with these works additional drainage, scrub clearance, tree management, and enrichment of the
woodland flora and the reinstatement of accessible paths through the Wood shall be undertaken.

The Yew hedged rose gardens with lily ponds shall also be restored to Norah Lindsays original intentions.
Positive hedge management will be undertaken to restore the hedges to their former condition and design
intent.
Yorkstone paving
The lawn has been over-planted with trees, which detrimentally affect the views and setting of the Mansion
House and diminish the presence of the mature trees. It is recommended that many of the immature trees
shall be removed to maintain the openness of the lawn and the preservation of the setting of the Mansion
House. These works have been agreed with close consultation with the Councils Tree Officer.

It is recommended to restore the cruciform arrangement of paths centred on the refurbished lily pond and to
retain some form of horticultural use with lines of fruit trees and raised beds along the southern boundary.
The remainder of the space shall be given over to sympathetically designed housing along the down slopes
to reduce the visual impact from the south.

Access to Mansion will follow the present alignment with a new spur to access the underground
parking to West Wing. The original central drive alignment to the Union Jack forecourt will be reinstated and the existing gate piers and Holm oaks to the west of the mansion will be retained to
mark and screen the entrance to the West Wing. The Union Jack forecourt will be fully restored
with matching masonry and stone bollards. Vehicular traffic will be restricted to emergency
access only.
Existing path just outside the red line provides good public access to the lake and cascade
between the two lakes and should be retained. A stepped ramp needs to be provided to provide
safe access down to lake edge path.
It is proposed to re-instate a link across the watercourse to re-connect the Mansion House with
the footpath network of Trent Country Park.
Wide borders with broad grass paths leading decor to the Rond Point
and Lime Avenue
Re-instatement of the Sassoon lakeside path with introduction of elements of boardwalk, viewing
decks, reed margins and informative educational signage will add to the interest and bio-diversity
of the lake.
The garden rooms along the spine will be reinstated with a new path arrangement to provide
public access.
The apse at the end of the pergola originally had a semi-circular seat, which will be reinstated.

Re-establishment of an east west path to the north of the formal lawn linking the arboretum with
the newly created rond-point

Retain cruciform shape of the original path arrangement within the walled garden, which will also
provide a public link through to the Wisteria Walk.

4,5 & 6 Nothing survives of Sassoons gardens from this point northwards. A new link in the spirit of
will be installed along the restored Lime Avenue. This will follow the crest of the ridge leading to

Little remains of the Walled Kitchen Garden today save the north and east extent of the perimeter wall, a
small section of the west wall, gates set in the north and east walls, the lily pond and some orchard trees.
The Georgian walls continue to define the garden but the cruciform layout has been lost.
