’ “WWE ee TRANSVERSE FORCE AT BIT TABLES TO AID IN SELECTION OF BOTTOM HOLE ASSEMBLIES HOLE ANGLE [> SHELL CANADA RESOURCES LIMITED DIVISION DRILLING SEPT. 1976 Copyt Issued to CONFIDENTIAL TRANSVERSE FORCE (NEGATIVE IF DIRECTED TOWARD LOW SIDE OF HOLE) WILL HOLE ANGLE INCREASE OR DECREASE TRANSVERSE FORCE TABLES (Output from SCHADS Computer Program) To Aid In Selection of Bottom Hole Selection eee ‘The enclosed tables show the magnitude and direction of the transverse force at the bit for various bottom hole assenblies and bit weights. Transverse force can be defined as the force exerted by the bit on the formation and acts perpendicular to the hole axis. The primary purpose of these tables is to give the foremen in the field an indication of the relative tendency of various bottom hole assemblies ‘to increase or decrease hole angle and to help him select an alternative assembly when a change in hookup is necessary to control hole angle. A positive transverse force tends to increase hole angle and a Regative transverse force tends to decrease hole angle. ‘The magnitude of the transverse force and the tendency of the formation to increase or decrease hole angle (magnitude of formation dip) jointly determine if the hole angle will remain constant or change. oo ASSUMPTIONS USED TABLE LIMITATIONS eae The assemblies listed in the tables were analyzed for hole between S° and 25° at bit weights between and 50,000. The hole size was assumed to be 8.8" and the hole axis was. assumed straight, The components used to make up these "standard" assenblies are descsribed in Figure 1. The length of drill collars between reamers or is recorded in multiples of 15 it. " DC) and the symbol "DC" ‘The assemblies are listed in the table in ascending order of transverse force at an The exact magnitude of the transversé force in a given field condition cannot be determined from the tables due to differences between the dimensions of the components used in the field and those of the "standard" assenblies used to derive the tables. In addition, bore deviation angle) and affects the accurate determination of the transverse forces is required, additional rms can be made using the geometry of the actual hole and drill string components being run in the field. . ] OTHER INFORMATION ‘The computer outputs are stored in the AVAILABLE Drilling Engineering Section if details other than transverse force are required. Other paraneters calculated include points of contact between the drill string and the well bore, contact forces, displacement of the drill string relative to the hole axis and bit aiming at various bit weights. BUMPLE OF USE If a well is holding angle at 10° OF TABLES using an SU, DQ, SU, DC— assenbly and an increase in angle is necessary to intersect the target area, an assenbly with a greater transverse force (greater tendency to increase hole angle) i a 1 ” should be run. a a The SU, DQ, SU, DC —— assembly has a transverse force of -2414 at 10,000f bit weight. Changing the assembly to 15' DC, SU, DC— would give a transverse force of 80# at 10,0008 bit \ weight and therefore this new assembly has a 4 greater tendency to increase hole angle than the Nate SU, DQ, SU, DC— hookup. However, going to a 60° i DC, SU, DC— assembly would result in a lower be transverse force (-382# at 10,000f bit weight) { and therefore would have a tendency to reduce hole angle. After using the 15' DC, SU, D0— assenbly for sufficient interval to observe its performance, it may be necessary to replace it with another assembly that has a higher transverse force if the hole angle does not increase at a sufficient rate. ANTICIPATED It is intended that the use of these tables and the SCHADS program together with discussions between operations and engineering Personnel will: 1. reduce the occurrence of directional drilling to change hole angle, 2, minimize the time required to zero in on appropriate bottom hole assenbly to effect a desired change in hole angle, and 3. allow higher bit weights to be nm ina given hole configuration by allowing selection of the best possible bottom hole assenbly. ce - Fee ee) - 20 eu uv7I09 Iva yv7102 T114a 3uyMds - dd MIZLUGVLS Iwulds - AS UaWVIY LNTOd 33YHL - TUNLWTONSHON s31d11 10 pS ete keel = ; j SLE = OI 09L°9 300 w5LE°2 = OT L 329° = TWNOOVIO .90°2?A008 40 00 HOLE SIZE: 3.8 BOTTOM HOLE ASSEMBLY 60" DC, R3, DQ, SU, DC 60' Dc, SU, 30" Dc, su, DC —_ Tendency to drop 60" DC, SY, DQ, SU, DC hole angle increases 75* DC, SU, DC in this direction 60" Dc, R3, SU, DC —_ aS¢ Downs) pc ee 60" DC, su, DC 75" DC, RS, SU, DC —_ 75* DC, SU, DQ, SU, DC —— 60" Dc, R3, DC 75' DC, SU, 30" DC, SU, DC —— 75" DC, R3, DQ, SU, DC_—— 45" DC, R3, DQ, SU, DC I 90" Dc, su, DC —_ Tendency to increase 90" pC, R3, bc hole angle increases 45" DC, SU, 30° DC, su, DC _—— in this, direction 4as* su, 45" DC, R3, SU, DC ve, su, 90" Dc, Rs, HOLE SIZE: 8.8 HOLE ANGL TABLE OF TRANSVERSE FORCE AT BIT ° fh, a, a a ee ‘Transverse For OT OLE EOL 1o,ou0 [ 20,000 | 30,000 | 40,000 [ 50,000) 90" DC, SU, DQ, SU, DC — -n “us -118 - OL - 64 90" Dc, SU, 30' Dc, SU, Dc — “an 144 17 - 1 + 64 90" DC, R3, DQ, SU, DC — -an -144 “17 - 91 + 64 RS, R3, DQ, SU, DC — 7138 -132 -130 -128 -126 SU, R3, DQ, SU, DC — -133 -131 7129 -126 124 RS, SU, DQ, SU, DC — -133 131 “128 7126 -124 ‘SU, SU, DQ, SU, DC — -131 -129 -127 -124 -122 45" Dc, SU, DC — -124 -122 -121 -119 -117 SU, SU, 30' DC, SU, DC — “123 -121 -119 -18 -116 SU, R3, 30* DC, SU, DC — -120 -118 “17 -us -14 RS, SU, 30" DC, SU, DC — -120 -118 -17 “15 -114 SU, DC, SU, 30° DC, sy — -119 “117 “us -14 “12 R3, RS, 30" DC, SU, DC — -117 -116 “14 “113 “1 RS, 30" DC, SU, SU, DC — -116 -114 “13 “a -110 30° Dc, R3, DQ, SU, DC — “116 14 “uz “110 -108 45" DC, R3, DC — “5 -113 12 “110 -109 30° Dc, SU, 30' DC, SU, DC — -no -109 -107 106 -105 TABLE OF TRANSVERSE FORCE AT BIT HOLE SIZE: 8.8 HOLE ANGL BOTTOM HOLE ASSEMBLY Dc » DQ, SU, DC — su, su, su DC, SU, 30° Dc, SU, DC — su ve, g 2/22 | Bs | PS RR RRR Ree eS ERREE & TABLE OF TRANSVERSE FuncE AT BIT ° HOLE SIZE: 8.8 NOL ANGE ‘Transverse Force at WOB of BOTTOM HOLE ASSEMBLY FERRE EE RSERSSRSe [BR|BRRRR ee gele| 28 #8 & re s{ | [8 | DQ, SU, DC —— gs BR Be 8 | su, DC —— ou — RRGEERE B & 8 & £ n i TABLE OF TRANSVERSE FonwE AT BIT HOLE SIZE: 8.8" HOLE ANGLE: 7-5 ‘Transverse Force at WOE of BOTTOM HOLE ASSEMBLY 60" DC, SU, 30" DC, SU, Do — 60" DC, R3, DQ, SU, DC —— Tendency to drop 60' DC, SU, DQ, SU, DC — hole angle increases 60" DC, R3, SU, DC — in this direction. 60" Dc, R3, DC — | 60" DC, su, DC — 75" DC, su, Do — 75" DC, R3, DC — 45" DC, R3, DQ, SU, DC — 75' DC, SU, DQ, SU, DC — 75" DC, R3, SU, DC — 75' DC, SU, 30 DC, SU, Dc — 45" DC, SU, 30° DC, Su, DC — 45" DC, R3, SU, DC — 75" DC, R3, DQ, SU, DC — Tendency to increase 45" DC, SU, DQ, SU, Do — hole angle increases 90" Dc, R3, Dc — in this direction, 90" pc, su, DC — 90" DC, SU, DQ, SU, DC — e = HOLE, ANGLE 7,57 BmeEBRBBaBBAZRE SR EER Se See ee oe ee eo ee TABLE OF TRANSVERSE FORCE AT BIT HOLE SIZE: 8.8" WoL AN BOTTOM HOLE ASSEMBLY 30° 30" DC, QI TABLE OF TRANSVERSE FORCE AT BIT TABLE OF TRANSVERSE FORCE AT BIT HOLE Size: 8.8" OLE BOTTOM HOLE ASSEMBLY at NOU of su, DC — su, Dc — DC, SU, DC, SU, DC, SU, pc — De — po — SU, 30° Dc, su, DC — 0Q, Su, DC, SU, DQ, Su, pc — pe — pc — co pc — DC, SU, SU, DC, SU, SU, " DC, SU, SU, su, DC — oc —— pc — RRR | q HOLE SIZE: 8.8" BOTTOM HOLE ASSEMBLY Verse Force att NUR of J!
