Undergraduate Teaching Assistants

Roles and Guidelines


Fall 2016 - Spring 2017

1. TA Duties and Responsibilities:

By accepting an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant position, you are agreeing to:

teach the lab sessions assigned to you


come prepared, organized, and on time to your lab sections
grade and return homework in a timely manner
be available to meet with students during stated office hours (minimum of 2 hours per week)
assist the instructor with other course-wide administrative tasks
attend all required TA meetings
conduct yourself in an ethical, professional manner at all times
participate in the TA training program which will be held during the first week of the semester

If you need to miss your lab section due to an emergency, you are required to make arrangements for
another TA to substitute for your section and notify the course instructor regarding your absence.
Failure to comply with these regulations may result in termination of your position.

2. TA Recruitment Process and Undergraduate TA Scholarships:

by August 15, 2016. Students with a GPA 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply. Applicants will be evaluated
on the basis of commitment and reliability, mastery of subject matter, and prior teaching experience.
TAships will be assigned according to the availability of TA positions.
If you are serving as a Teaching Assistant for the first time, you will be enrolled for 3 credits in either the
CptS or EE 499 Special Problems course (UG TA Section) during the semester of your TAship. (Note:
CptS/EE 499 is considered a technical elective course. Up to 3 CptS/EE 499 credits can be counted
toward graduation in all EE, CptE, and CptS tracks except the EE Systems and Microelectronics tracks.)

Second and third time undergraduate TAs are awarded up to $1000 scholarships (per semester). The
scholarships will be issued during the first week of the semester. Second and third time TAs are not
required to enroll in CptS/EE 499. First time TAs are not eligible for an Undergraduate TA Scholarship. All
Undergraduate TAs must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA in order to remain eligible.

3. TA Training:

Mandatory TA training will be given during the first week of the semester to those who will be a TA for
the first time. This training program consists of workshops and tutorials in the specific content of the
teaching responsibilities as well as general training on the professional aspects of teaching.

In addition, all undergraduate TAs should complete the below required trainings before they start their
TAship duties:
- FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) Training

If students have taken the FERPA training within the past 3 years, they dont need to re-take it.
- Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training.

If students have taken this training within the past 5 years, they dont need to re-take it.

4. Time Commitment:

Your TA duties, on average, require approximately 10 hours per week. This will vary weekly over the
semester.
