Sample Essay
Cases of snatch thefts are reported almost daily in our local
dailies. In some incidences innocent lives have been lost due this
unspeakable act.I recently was an eye witness to this dastardly

act. The horrifying incident unfolded right in front of my eyes as I

was walking to school for my football practice last week.

The football practice was scheduled at 8.00 in the morning. On

that fateful morning, I decided to walk to school instead of taking

the bus as I normally did. As I was striding along the brick

pavement, my eyes caught Miss Siti, my neighbour, standing on

the opposite site of the road waiting to catch a bus to work. She

was gingerly holding a big brown handbag in her hand.I waved to Friends Follow ing This Blog

As I strode past her, I saw two men on a motorbike riding slowly

towards her. Both were wearing full face helmets. I didn't give

much thought about it and just moved on.Suddenly, without

warning, they zoomed past her snatching her handbag in the

the horizon.

I quickly dashed to Miss Siti's aid. There was a look of

bewilderment on her pained face. I helped to check on

her.Fortunately, only her hand and leg were bruised but overall

she was alright. I immediately called and informed her father

about the incident. He drove there as fast as lightning and took

her home. Later, they went to the police station to make a

report. The barbaric action of the snatch thieves just made me

angry. At the same time, sad when I thought about all

the unfortunate victims who had fallen prey to them.

In order to prevent from becoming a victim of snatch theft,

people need to be more careful. For example, when they are alone

at a bus stop or walking back home alone- alertness plays an

important role in ensuring their safety. In addition, the

government should put up more street lights so the streets and

dark alleys can be bright and safe for the public.Lastly, I strongly

believe police presence in and around housing areas would boost

public confidence whereby their safety can be assured by the

police.

Thank you for the very useful tips. I'm wondering about the word limit though. The question says
to write between 120 to 150 words. How closely do we have to follow it?

This is a bit tricky because it all depends on your school teacher. M y advice is ask your
teacher what to do and listen to her. M OE has given the guide lines but it's still up to
the respective school teachers to allow the number of words for students to write
because at the end of the day it is they who are going to mark the papers....

As for my students I ask them to write 250 words.

Reading is one way you could increase your vocab base. For example, read the local
STAR newspaper. Look for news about crimes, road accidents, flood etc and jot down
the terms used for describing the incidents. You can a scrap book to write down the
vocabs...later, go through them and try to use them in your writing...

All the best...!

***You may email me for personal development only not for your school work or school
assignments...ok!

Hi Huda,

There is no specific format for an article. Writing an article is just like writing a normal
essay. Give a 'TITLE' for your article and depending on the question, you can write for
example....

Huda

at the left end corner of your article.

Dear student, let me be firm here....I do not believe in giving fish to my students-no
matter how hard they ask for it- I believe in giving them the fishing rod. I just tell them
to go fish themselves for I have taught them how to fish and also given one or two fish
to them....In current global scenario, one must learn to be independent and not rely
too much on teachers for help.

Therefore, I would strongly encourage all you students out there to give your best and
learn from mistakes---to be an expert angler one needs to be very patient and skillful --
same goes with writing an essay....!

I wrote 403 words for my PT3 Essay trials today. The word limit is the same and 4 points were
given but they required us to give two more points of our own aswell. I'm wondering if any marks
would be deducted? If so, how many and will it effect my grade a lot?

You have written a very long essay - I am sure your teacher will penalize you because
the required words are roughly 180 - depending on your teacher's discretion it can be
200-250 words. Anything more than that is way too long....but, it all depends on your
teacher.

From what you have mentioned I can see that you do really put a lot of hard work to
improve your English vocabularies...it's a good start Aiman....but, as you know there's
no short cut to success...therefore, in order to improve your vocab-do a lot of reading
and writing essays in English and ask someone to check them for you...the best person
would be your teacher....All the best Aiman...

I write this essay and hope teacher can check it.

Snatch theft cases have been bandied about by the public.Local dailies also shows that the
number of snatch theft cases escalating and ringing alarm bells across the country.Recently,I
became an eye witness of this cruel action. The incident just occurred right in front of my eyes.

It was a windy day and I was walking to my school for my extracurricular activities.I was striding
on a leisurely way as the weather was favourable. On the opposite road,M rs. Tan,my neighbour
was waiting to catch a bus for work.I waved to her but she did not notice me as she was
engrossed texting on her handphone.I continued my walk to school.

On the opposite direction of road, there was a motorcycle coming furiously.Their faces were
covered with helmets.I did not give much thought about them as I was going to late to my
school.Out of blue, the motorcyclist zoomed past her and the pillion rider snatched M rs. Tan's
handbag. She had butterflies in her stomach when she felt a strong tug on his handbag. She tried
to get back her handbag. He held her handbag strongly.M rs. Tan screamed at the top of her voice
for seeking help. The pillion rider kicked her in cold storage and they successfully snatched her
handbag.

I was stunned at that moment.I could not think of anything. However,I managed to note the
registration number of the motorcycle.I quickly ran to M rs. Tan and tried to lend a hand to
her.She was in trauma. Her arms were bruised.I quickly decided to call the police and lodged a
complaint.I also called M r. Tan,her husband to bring her back home.M r. Tan,drove his car as fast
as lightning and arrived at the scene in the nick of time.He brought his wife to the clinic which is
a stone's throw from that place.

I was frightened by the incident.Upon walking to school,I was thinking about the incident.I was
sad for M rs. Tan and at the same time angry with the thieves. They were willing to harm the other
for money without humanity.I hoped not to be a witness of this incident again in the future.

Safety precautions have to be taken in order to prevent from being a snatch theft victim.Snatch
thieves usually home in women who become a sitting duck.In order to be safe, women should
learn martial arts to protect them.Besides,we should not walk in deserted lanes alone. We should
also be on the lookout of suspicious people.Lastly,do not flaunt money and valuable in public
places. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.

You have written quite a lenghty essay. Good for you Sathya...

1)Snatch theft cases have been (bandied) about by the public- what is "bandied" in this
context.
2)Some of the words used do not fit in or are inappropriate.
3)Sentence structure and grammar needs improvement.
4)Use appropriate adjectives...

*Overall it is nicely written...keep up the good work and all the best...!
