GUIDE CARD:

Decimals in Our Everyday Lives

Hey Whitey! Do you know how to count money using decimals?

I dont, but my playmate Brownies knows everything about

decimals.
Gosh! Friendship, can you help me to tell Brownie that I want to
learn aout decimals?

Ok friendship and I like too!

==

Hi Brownie, me and my friend Minnie wants to learn how to read

and write decimals. Can you help us?

Aww!! Awww!! OK

===

Hello Minnie, nice to meet you.

Same here Brownie, thank you.

Ok, heres how to know and understand decimals and money.

==

Before we go on, lets study the concept of Decimal Fraction.

Decimal fraction is a fraction which is written without a

denominator. It is always less than one.

==

When we write numbers, the position (or "place") of each digit

is important.

In the number 327:

the "7" is in the Ones position, meaning 7 ones (which is 7),

the "2" is in the Tens position meaning 2 tens (which is twenty),

and the "3" is in the Hundreds position, meaning 3 hundreds.

"Three Hundred Twenty Seven"
==

Study the chart. It shows the place value of every digit in

333.333. notice the use of the decimal point.

HUNDRED

TENS

100 10 1 . 0.1 0.01 0.001

3 3 3 . 3 3 3
3
3 3 1000
1 00
3 10
0.003
30 0.03
300 0.3
Now take a look on how do you read and write decimal numbers.

Study how they are read and written.

0.8 : Eight tenths

0.26 : Twenty-six hundredths
32.73 : Thirty-two and seventy-three
hundredths
7.042 : Seven and forty-two thousandths
As we move left, each position is 10 times bigger!
Tens are 10 times bigger than Ones
Hundreds are 10 times bigger than Tens

... and ...

As we move right, each position is 10 times smaller.

From Hundreds, to Tens, to Ones

But what if we continue past Ones?

What is 10 times smaller than Ones?

110ths (Tenths) are!

==

2.346 & 2.326

Are the ones digits the same?

Is the tenths digit the same?

Are the hundredths digits the same?

4 is greater than two,

So 2.346 > 2.326

==

We compare digits in decimals just as we do for whole numbers.

==

You come across the decimals and money in your everyday life at
home, in school, when you take jeepney or when you pay for the
things you buy in stores. All along these activities you make use
of money. You pay when you buy your snacks from the canteen.

Money

We use P for pesos and C for centavos.

We all know that there are 100 centavos in 1 peso.

We use the decimal point in separating the pesos from the

centavos.

5c - P .05 - 5
100

10 c - P .10 - 10
100

50 c - P .50 - 50
100
3 pesos and 75 centavos = P 3.75

155 pesos and 50 centavos = P 155.50

Just remember, separate the whole number to decimal.

To add decimals, follow these steps:

Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points
lined up

Put in zeros so the numbers have the same length

Then add using column addition, remembering to put the decimal point
in the answer

Example: Add 1.452 to 1.3

Line the decimals up: 1 . 452
+ 1.3

"Pad" with zeros: 1.452

+ 1.3 00

Add: 1.452
+ 1.300
2.752

==

Oh my goodness! Now I know how to use the decimal system in

my everyday life. Thank you very much.

Hey wait, I will give you both some exercises is it ok?

Yes! Were so excited to do exercises.

==

Great job! You know already the decimals, how to read and write
decimals, and how to convert fractions to decimal form and vise-
versa. Here is the next activity to enhance your knowledge on the
concept.

Complete the table:

ASSESSMENT CARD

Hey Whitey and Minnie, whats your feeling?

Excellent!

Both of you knows already how to rename the fraction in decimal

form and the place value.

Yeah, thank you so much for teaching us how to read and write
decimals and how to rename decimals to fractions. Now we can
manage to do all of these. We can separate writing whole
numbers and decimals with confidence.
Youre welcome, but before I leave please answer the next activity
for both of you to evaluate the understanding with the concept.

Write > , < or = to compare the decimals.

1. 1.5 1.9
2. 6.4 6.2
3. 0.9 0.19
4. 8.07 8.7
5. 0.6 0.60

Arrange the decimals in order from least to greatest.

0.8 1.8 1.08 0.18 0.108
