A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier Lyric Project

For this unit you will utilize the music mentioned in Ishmael Beahs memoir or something current, including
something you compose, to write a song (or poem) about the theme of this memoir as well as Maus Volume I and
Persepolis; all the texts deal with oppression during times of war and their survival.

In your lyrics, you will persuade the audience to _____________________ (something you learned from reading the
unit texts such as war impacts every living person thus must be avoided at all costs) and include the elements of
RENNS in delivering your objective.

1) RENNS from A Long Way Gone

2) RENNS from Maus
3) RENNS from Persepolis

This song can be written from the point of view of Beah or Spegielman or Satrapi or written from an omniscient
perspective. But it must be consistent.

Your lyrics must also include at least two refrains that capture the theme of the novels, perhaps the objective of your
song. Remember a theme is not simply a word, rather the main idea or the underlying meaning of a literary work. So
love is not a theme, but the idea, love is blind is.

The theme will be the title of your assignment.

You must provide a typed final draft of your new lyrics with the name of the song that inspired you. The copy you
submit must be annotated with the required components (this means it must be underlined and labeled).

Lastly, you must perform your song in class. You may either use the instrumental track of the song that inspired
you, sing a cappella or use your own beat/ instrument.

If you want work with a partner, double the components of this project. But remember, only one grade.
