Objectives
1. The learner will accurately use a graph to represent the transfer of heat.
2. The learner will be able to describe temperature changes between two objects observed
during energy transfer.
3. The learner will be able to give an example of convection, conduction, and radiation.
Misconception
Misconception- heat is how hot something is.
Heat actually explains how much energy something contains.
Safety
Students will need help while using the hot water in the Explore.
Requisite Knowledge
Students will need to have an understanding of how to read and create a simple
graph.
Vocabulary-
Particle- small unit of matter
Energy- property of an object that can be converted or transferred
Heat- greater movement of atoms and larger amount of energy present
Convection-transfer of energy between fluids
Conduction-transfer of energy through a substance that is not a fluid
Radiation-emission of energy through electromagnetic waves
Goal:
The goal of this tag game is for the hot particle group to give away 5 of their
stickers to the cold particles. The game ends when each student ends up with 5
stickers.
Set-Up:
The teacher will have the students play a game of tag. The students need to be split
into two even groups. One group will be the cold particles and one group will be the
hot particles. In the cold particle group the students will be given a piece of paper
taped to their back. The students in the hot particle group will be given a sheet
with 10 stickers on it. You will need an outdoor space or gym to play this game.
Rules:
1. Have a set area for students to run in.
2. When a cold particle gets tagged they must stand still so they heat particle
can transfer their sticker
3. Only one person may put one sticker on another person at a time.
4. When a student has received 5 stickers or has 5 stickers left they stop running
and stand and sway.
5. Cold- slow, hot- fast
Exit Ticket:
Before the students leave for lunch have them complete an Exit Ticket answering
the following questions:
While students are completing this activity the teacher will go around asking the
students the following questions. This will help the teacher understand what areas
the students struggle in and what areas students understand.
When the video is complete read over the fill-in-the-blank answers with the
students. The students will have more than one opportunity to record the answers
throughout the video.
Conduction-
Convection-
Radiation-
Equilibrium-
Students will work with a partner to sort out pictures into three categories:
convection, conduction, and radiation.
The teacher will pass out Attachment D to the students. If this is the teachers first
time doing the activity they may want to pre-cut the sorting pictures or have the
students cut them as the activity progresses.
The teacher will walk around the classroom asking students:
-Why did you put that picture in that category? (This can validate the students
knowledge or can be a picture in the wrong category to help the students think of
the correct category)
-Can any of these examples be used in more than one category?
The teacher will check for the students overall understanding of the activity.
When the students have completed the activity the teacher will pass out
Attachment E. The students will work on their own using any examples,
explanations, or drawings to answer the questions. This will be a formative
assessment and will require the students to work on their own. When they are
complete the teacher will grade the worksheet on the following: accurate drawing
and complete sentence explaining the term.
Grading:
Each drawing and each sentence will receive a grade of 3 for being accurately
complete, a 2 for being somewhat complete and a 1 for inaccurate and a 0 for
incomplete. The total possible points are 24.
