PROCEDURE

Part 1. Preparing the Stock Solution

Calculate the number of grams of copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate, required to

prepare 100.0 ml. of a 0.200 M solution. Check them with your instructor. Once
your calculations have been approved, weigh out the required amount of copper
sulfate on a balance in a clean, dry weighing dish. Be sure to show your calculations
of the report sheet.

1. Transfer the solid to a clean, dry beaker. Use a wash bottle filled with distilled
or deionized water to rinse any retraining solid from the weighing dish into
the beaker.
2. Dissolve the solid in the beaker in a minimum amount of distilled or deionized
water, then transfer the solution to a 100 ml volumetric flask using a funnel.
Rinse the beaker with distilled or deionized water using a wash bottle. Pour
the rinse water through the funnel and into the volumetric flask so that
every bit of solution is transferred to the volumetric flash.
3. Slowly add more distilled or deionized water to the volumetric flask until the
flask is twothirds full. Place the cap on the volumetric flack and invert it
several times to mix the solution. Continue filling the flask until the liquid
level is almost to the 100 ml, mark. Fill to the mark with a pipet or wash
bottle drop-by-drop so that no water splashes up on the sides of the flask. Fill
until the bottom of the meniscus is exactly at the 100.0-ml, mark.
4. Cap the volumetric flask and invert it and mix until a homogeneous solution
is achieved.

Part 2. Preparing Diluted Solutions

You will use the following equation.

C1V1-C2V2

5. Place five clean and dry test tubes in a test tube rack and label them #1-5.
Laber one pipet and use it to transfer the stock solution only.
6. Using a 10-ml. graduated cylinder, measure and pour 10 ml. of the 0.200 M
stock solution into test tube #1. Calculate the concentration and record it in
table 1.
7. Using a clean Beral-type pipet, fill the 10-ml, graduated cylinder exactly to
the 5.00 ml mark with the stock solution. Try not to get any drops of solution
on the sides of the cylinder. Make sure that the bottom of the meniscus sits
exactly at the 4.00 ml mark. THIS IS DILUTION ONE.
8. Carefully fill the graduted cylinder to the 10.0-ml, mark with distilled or
deionized water. Do not-overfill.
9. Mix the solution in the graduated cylinder by repeatedly filling and emptying
a clean pipet with the solution three tunes. The agitation caused by filling and
emptying the pipe will mix the solution.
10.Transfer the mixed solution to test tube. #2. Calculate the concentration and
record it in table 1.
11.Repeat steps 6-10 using 3.00 mL of the stock solution.
12.Transfer the mixed solution to test tube #3. Calculate the concentration and
record it in table 1.
13. And record the necessary data for this solution in the Data Table. THIS
IS DILUTION TWO.
14. Rinse the graduated cylinder with water and dry it with paper towel.
15. Repeat steps 6-10 using 22.50mL of the stock solution Calculate the
concentration and record it in table 1. THIS IS DILUTION 3.
16.Repeat steps 6-10 using 22.50mL of the stock solution Calculate the
concentration and record it in table 1. THIS IS DILUTION 4.

Part 3. Measurements Using Spectrophometer

17.Your instructor may request that you use one cuvet for all five solutions. If
this is your instruction, first measure the mose dilute solution and work your
way to the stock solution.
18.Fill the cuvet with the solution. Handle the cuvet by the top to avoid getting
fingerprint on the surface. Wipe the cuvet with lint-free tissue paper on lens
paper.
19.Allow the spectrophometer to warm up for at least 15 minutes.
20.Turn the wavelength knob on the spctrophometer to 635 nm.
21.Fill a cuvet about full tih disilled water. Wipe the cuvet with a lint-free
tissue, then place the cuvet spectrophometer sample holder compartment.
22.Press the zero Abs/100% T button on the spectrophometer to set zero
Abosorbance.
23.Remove the blank cuvet from the spectrophometer compartment. Empty
the cuvet and add the solution prepared in dilution 4.
24.Record the absorbance reading in the Data Table.
25.Repeat steps 21 through 24 with solutions prepared the dilution 3, then
dilution 2, then 1, the stock solution. Record all absorbance readings.
26.Dispose all CuSO4(aq) waste in designated waste container.
