Problem Set

Problem 1
In a population, there is a common recessive albino trait. The normal allele has a population relative
4 1
frequency of 5 (N). The albino allele has a population relative frequency of 5 (D). A woman who is ND
marries a man with the normal phenotype but unknown genotype. What is the chance that the man will
pass on an N allele? A D allele? That they will have a child who is NN; ND; DD?

Problem 2
A newly wed plans to have four children and consults a seer. The seer pushes aside her crystal ball and
replaces it with a pascal triangle. The seer googles and finds that the probability of having a girl is 49%.
Whats the probability distribution for the four girls.

Problem 3
You need a frog to dissect in your biology experiment. The school ran out of supply of frogs because of
an intended increase in enrollment that was not communicated to the supplies office. Now your only
chance is to catch a frog near Kalayaan dorm where your boyfriend/girlfriend stays. Your classmates
told you that the chance of catching a frog in one hour during nighttime is 25%. Unfortunately, you can
only go out one hour each night because your parents are strict. It is Friday and you need the frog by
Monday. What is the chance that you will get to see your boyfriend/girlfriend for three nights over the
weekend? How confident are you that you will have a frog by Monday?

Problem 4
After realizing that the chance of catching a frog by Monday is not that high, you decided you should
help your boyfriend/girlfriend catch a frog for you. How will this increase your confidence you will have
a frog by Monday?

Problem 5
Suppose the number of rat snakes we expect to find in a one-hundred-meter square quadrat follows the
Poisson distribution with mean = .05. You need two rat snakes for your biology class. One for you
and one for your best friend who keeps on asking you to do his/her assignments for him/her. What is
the probability of finding at least two rat snake in your 1-hectare backyard?

Problem 6
Your teacher asked you measurement of weights of babies born in PCMC and find out how many
exceeded 7 pounds in the past month. Unfortunately, due to privacy concerns, the hospital refused to
give you access to hospital records. The hospital administrator, who turned out be a good friend of your
mother, told you that the average birth weight is 6.8 lbs with standard deviation of 1.2 lbs and that
there were 251 births in the previous months.

Assuming that the birth weight is, can you give an estimate of the number of babies born exceeding 7
lbs for the past month?

Problem 7
Given the above information, what is confidence interval for the true population mean at 99%
confidence level

Problem 8

the 40 cataract patients who came to him in the past month, 5 came to the seminar. Make an estimate
