speed / velocity WS #5

1. An airplane travels from Calgary to Toronto in 4.33 hrs. Find the cruising speed of the plane (in m/s) if the
distance between the two cities is 4330 km.

2. Molly, a stray dog in the city of Pittsburgh, runs one complete lap around the base of the PPG Building in
exactly 10.0 minutes. The building has a rectangular base with dimensions 132 meters by 153 meters. Find
Mollys (a) total distance, (b) total displacement, (c) average speed, and (d) average velocity.

3. An executive jet cruises at 700. km/hr. If the winds are light, it consumes fuel at a rate of 38 L/min. If the jets
fuel tanks contain 6840 L when full, what is its maximum range?

4. A train travels 58.0 km at an average velocity of 77.0 km/hr west, waits for 15.0 minutes at a station, and then
runs for 30.0 minutes at an average velocity of 64.0 km/hr east. Find (a) the total distance the train traveled,
(b) the total displacement of the train, (c) the average speed for the trip, and (d) the average velocity of the
train for the trip.

5. During lift-off, the space shuttle travels straight up for a distance of 9045 m in 13.5 seconds. It then continues
at a speed of 1340 m/s for 25.0 seconds before dropping the solid rocket boosters. What is the average
speed of the shuttle during this first part of the take-off?

6. An ant climbs to the very end of the second hand on a wall-mounted clock at exactly 9:15:00. The second
hand is 13.5 cm long. When the time is exactly 9:17:30, (a) what distance did the ant travel? (b) What is the
ants displacement at this time? (c) What was the ants average speed? (d) What is the ants average velocity
at this time? (e) At what time would the ant have traveled a distance of 100. m (give your answer to the
nearest second).
7. Molly, the stray dog from The Burgh, runs 225 m north in 2.30 minutes. She turns east and jogs with an
average speed of 1.09 m/s for 2.50 minutes, then stops to rest for 1.45 minutes at a fire hydrant. Finally, Molly
sprints toward the west a distance of 163.5 m with an average speed of 3.91 m/s. (a) What distance did Molly
travel? (b) What was her final displacement? (c) What was Mollys average speed for the trip (in m/s)? (d)
What was her average velocity for the entire trip (in m/s)?

8. A spooked horse runs 22.0 m/s north for 30.0 seconds, turns completely around and runs 300. meters for 15.0
seconds. She stops for 5.00 seconds, then runs south again 150. meters at 15.0 m/s. Find her (a) total
distance, (b) total displacement, (c) average speed, and (d) average velocity.

9. In the morning before Homeroom Period, Mr. McNulty observes a particular sophomore doing laps around
the upstairs hallways. Beginning at precisely 7:25:00, he carefully times the student each time she passes his
position at the corner as shown below. On her first lap, she has an average speed of 1.090 m/s, taking
4 minutes, 26 seconds to complete the lap. She passes Mr. McNultys position again at exactly 7:33:08. If
she maintains her overall average speed at the end of the 2 laps for the rest of her walk to Mr. Hardens room
(235), will she be able to make it before the late bell rings? By how many seconds will she be late or how
many seconds will she have to spare?
