Exam 2

1. You hear someone say, Ilocanos not a language, its a dialect!

How would you respond to this statement? Compose a short reply.

I would definitely snicker. Then after that I would say Its like
youre saying that a pig is a reptile, a triangle has 4 equal sides, puppies
are young cats, an elephant can fly up high into the sky, 1+1=7, the title
of the Philippine national anthem is Bayang Magiliw, Binay is a mestizo,
P-noy has the same hairstyle as Justin Bieber and my you heard my mom
saying that Im ugly even once. Well, if you do believe it then I would
accept that Ilocano is a dialect and not a language. Because as far as I
know, Ilocano has two dialects and these are Amianan and Abagatan. And
dont hold it against me if Im wrong, I just learned it from my Lingg 1
professor so if you ever get in trouble because of this, look for him and
not me.

2. The Philippines has around 180 languages. What do you think

will be the linguistic situation of the country a hundred years from
now? Discuss the factors that will contribute to your linguistic
scenario.

I think that hundred years from now, our native languages would
prosper and shine once again while the languages that we currently use
would also remain. Just kidding. Honestly, hundred years is a pretty long
time and I personally think that the Philippines would only have one
language, its either English / Chinese or there would be a new language.

First, it would be English or Chinese because of their strong

influence and we would be required to learn and master this language in
order to cope with globalization where in a scenario that this country is
on the lead.

The second factor would be imperialism/occupation. Because of the

formidable gap between the military power of China / America and the
Philippines, we would be defeated and forced to submit. In contrast with
the Spaniard imperialism in the Philippines in which the Filipinos are
prohibited to learn Spanish, they will teach us their language but in
exchange, we would be forbidden to speak in other languages other than
Chinese / English in order to prevent any plot of overthrowing the
current government.
And the third factor is that a new language would rise and pave a
way for Filipinos to have a spot in the international world. Every Filipino
would use it because its easier to use, no ambiguity and vagueness
anymore so there wouldnt be any misunderstandings anymore and it
also sounds good to the ear. Just kidding, every Filipino would use it
because its new and trending.

3. Identify a language policy in the Philippines (may also be a

language policy in an institution / school). Discuss its
implementation, merits and problems (if there are any). Critique
this policy.

We have this policy in our province (Roxas City) but its an

unwritten one. Its the same as when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Its not just you should speak their language in that area but you should
also be in in their culture. This is the same case wherever place you go,
you should follow the customs of those who live in it. You should follow
the lead of those who know and can show you the ropes.

Also, you should be the one to adjust and not them because first is
who the hell are you and second thing is who the hell are you again. This
is to prevent misunderstandings, to prevent being labeled as an outsider
or feign superiority and cause discomfort to others. This policy is a really
good thing because you will feel like you belong, that youre not out of
place, that you are not different and all alone. You will have that sense of
family and will not start to miss your own family because you already
have one in this place. And learning their language would also help you
develop new mindsets because language is a way to adapt to a culture.

BONUS: Is this statement semantically correct: I WILL ALWAYS

LOVE YOU.?
Explain your answer.

Find me, Ill prove it to you that this statement is semantically

correct. Kidding aside, its a yes because the word always is relative.
It is subjective on each individual on what you mean by consistent and
unwavering. And with respect to time, always means forever or perpetual
and its meaning lies on the person itself. What do you mean by forever?
The time till your lives extinguished? Then that would be easy to prove
that you will always love a person. But how about if forever means an
indefinite amount of time? There is so many things unknown to humans
and we really dont know what happens after death. So I will just leave
this here, Ill be loving you forever, deep inside my heart you'll leave me
never, even if you took my heart, and tore it apart, I would love you still,
forever.
