language. This refers mostly to abstract ideas
people can express ideas more detailed and compact with metaphors.
Sometimes, speakers want their listeners to know about their attitudes or interests.
This can also be done by a special language, a kind of indirect expressions.
For example, when one said; I froze when I was my ex-boyfriend, she didnt
mean that she froze, turning into a block of ice with the temperature of zero
degree when she saw her ex-boyfriend but it rather a figure of speech used
to explain the condition of becoming totally still when she saw her ex-
boyfriend. In understanding the mentioned example, it takes no time for
someone to understand the intended meaning as the metaphor used is so
common our culture and society.
Integrating metaphor, one will be able to explain abstract or complex concepts that

In the example above, the speaker; Brian, used dog tired as a metaphor for his
condition of being exhausted. The mother understands Brians condition
immediately as the metaphor dog tired carries the meaning where Brian (as in the
example) is extremely physically exhausted after coming back from a camp yet, he
is happy that he joined the camp.
Amin, used black sheep as a metaphor for himself, being that one out of place or
the different child in his family.
