Ken Buckland (91) was a four year standout on the Raider wrestling team and
also ran cross country. He amassed an amazing 174-14 record (93%) in a
wrestling career that saw him finish in the top four at the State Tournament three
straight years, and in the process became Portlands first State Champion
wrestler. He won the MHSAA Class B State Title in his junior year (at 112 lbs.),
finished as the State Runner-Up (at 119 lbs) as a senior and was fourth as a
sophomore (at 112 lbs). He was named Team Captain his senior year, and
twice received the Coach's Choice award. Ken was on the Ionia County team
(twice), the Lansing State Journal Dream Team (twice), and was a 3-time
Ingham County League champ. He represented Portland and USA Wrestling on
cultural exchange trips to Japan (1989) and Brazil (1991). Ken went on to
wrestle at Central Michigan University where he was a four year letter winner.
After college he returned to Portland to assist for two years under Mark Holdren. Ken currently lives in
Grand Ledge with his family and stays involved in wrestling by officiating during the high school season.
2006 inductees
Mark Buckland (93) was a perfect 44-0 his senior season (at 125 lbs.) as he
marched to a Class B State Championship while at PHS. His career record was
149-11-3, 91%. Mark was a three-time ICL Champion and a four-time
All-County Team selection. He was third at States as a junior and qualified for
States as a freshman; only a broken arm his sophomore season kept him from
being a four-time state qualifier. Mark represented Portland and USA Wrestling
on a cultural exchange trip to Japan. After graduating from PHS Mark
continued wrestling at Olivet College where he wrestled on the varsity team for
four years. While at OC he was a three-time NCAA Division III National
Qualifier (at 126 lbs.) and three-time captain. Mark also received the Coachs
Award and Team MVP honors. He was named the Outstanding Senior
Academic Athlete and was an NCAA Division III Academic All-American. Mark
th
has been a 6 grade teacher for 10 years and has been the Assistant Varsity Wrestling coach at Grand
Ledge for six years. He currently coaches Grand Ledge middle school wrestling with former PHS grad
Greg Almy. Mark resides in Grand Ledge with his family.
1990-91 Varsity Wrestling Team was the first PHS wrestling team
to qualify for the MHSAA State Dual Meet Finals. Their season
record was 26-2, losing only to State Champs Eaton Rapids and
State Runner-up Grosse Ile. The Raiders defeated five ranked
opponents during the season and were fourth in the final Class B
rankings. They won three tournament championships; Carson City,
Maple Valley, and Ovid Elsie. The 90-91 Raiders were a dominant
dual team; their average dual meet team score was twice their
opponents average score. They were a perfect 7-0 in Ingham County League Duals and won the ICL
Tournament by a 58.5 point margin to capture the League Championship. The Raiders were District
Champs and Regional Champs on the way to the quarterfinals. They won the MHSAA Team District
Sportsmanship Award as well.

Adam Fedewa (90) was a very successful PHS wrestler. He was a team leader
and motivator while a Raider; characteristics that have benefited him as he has
gone on to be an accomplished wrestling coach. Adam won nearly 80% of his
matches, finishing with a 130-34 career record, while recording 51 falls. He was a
two-time captain, three-time ICL champion, and placed 1st or 2nd in 22 tournaments.
Adam was a three-time Individual State Qualifier; placing 5th as a sophomore at 105
lbs. and 3rd as a senior at 119 lbs when he finished with a 49-2 record. After
graduating from PHS, Adam wrestled a season at Ferris State before transferring to
Olivet College to wrestle the final three seasons of his collegiate career. He was a
Division III Academic All-American and a NCAA National Qualifier at Olivet where
he was selected as the college Male Athlete of the Year. He completed his
undergraduate work in 1996 and earned his Master's Degree in 2006. After college Adam taught in
Fowlerville and Portland, coaching wrestling at many levels. He coached youth in the Portland
Wrestling club returning much to the program, the school district and community. Adam was also the
head coach at Williamston High. He has worked with many talented individuals including National and
State Champions and All-State wrestlers. Adam has been involved in coaching wrestling for over 20
years, impacting many young wrestlers. He currently is the head coach at Lansing Eastern High School
where he teaches health and physical education. Adam lives in Portland with his wife Katie and two
daughters Ruthie (7) and Augusta (5), and a third child on the way.
Chad Guilford (97) was a hardworking and talented football player and wrestler
while at PHS. He proves the old adage, if you work hard, good things will
happen. In football Chad played defensive end and fullback for three years on
the varsity team. He was voted Team Most Valuable Player (MVP) as a senior
and was selected as 2nd team All-Conference (ICL). Chad was also a standout
wrestler winning 82% of his matches on his way to a 126-28 record. Chad was a
two-time ICL champion, three-time All-County selection, two-time Lansing State
Journal All-Area Team selection and a two-time MHSAA State Finals Qualifier.
As a junior, he was 2nd at 171 lbs. at the State Finals finishing with a 49-5 record.
He was 45-1 as a senior winning the Division III 171 lbs State Championship.
When asked what he found memorable about his PHS career, Chad mentioned
that he appreciated having dedicated coaches (Holdren and Sandborn); and
training partners Travis Opperman and Ben Spitzley and his twin brother Patrick who had the same
goals and commitment to being the best they could be. He also remembered how coach Sandborn
whooped on them.until they were juniors and finally got bigger than he was. After graduating from
PHS, Chad wrestled at Muskegon Community College where he registered 58 wins against 20 losses.
In his freshman year at MCC he was ranked 7th nationally; as a sophomore he was ranked as high as
2nd. Chad was a two-time NJCAA National Qualifier at 184lbs. After receiving his degree he entered
the workforce as a corrections officer. He presently works at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in
Ionia. Chad and his wife Nicole have four children; Lexie (11), Madison (9), Reagan (5), and Landon
(1).
2013 inductees
Tracy Selden (85) participated in wrestling, football and track while at Portland High
School. He earned two varsity letters in football (wearing #82), one varsity letter in track
and four varsity letters in wrestling. In track, he was versatile enough to run middle and
long distances, relays and the field events of the pole vault and high jump. It was in
wrestling that Tracy made his mark. Tracys coach for the last 2 years of his career,
Mark Holdren, told the committee that Tracy was the beginning of the Glory Years of
PHS wrestling. Coach Holdren indicated that his example of hard work and
success paved the way for the future successes of the program. He was the 1st MHSAA State medalist
in Portland wrestling history. In his four years as a Raider wrestler, Tracy was a three-time conference
champion (and runner-up once); he was a District medalist (2 times); Regional medalist; and was 4th at
the Class B State Wrestling Finals as a senior. Also, as a senior Tracy was named Captain of the team,
and named Outstanding Wrestler by his team and coaches. Over the course of his high school career,
he had a 72% win percentage. When he left PHS, Tracy had set a new record for career wins at 112.
He participated in the Freestyle club wrestling for four years and Freestyle open division for a year.
In addition to athletics, Tracy was a member of the National Honor Society and the FFA at PHS.
Adam Johnson (04) participated in wrestling (4yrs), football (3yrs), and cross
country (1yr) while he was at Portland High School. In his one year as a cross
country runner (his senior yr.), Adam was a State Qualifier. Adam was an
outstanding wrestler for PHS. As he grew into wrestling, the weight he wrestled
at changed. He started at 103 lbs., and ended his PHS career at 125 lbs. Adam
was successful at all weights. During his 4 years as a prep wrestler, he was First
Team All-County (4 times); Ingham County League (ICL) Champion (3 times);
and All-State (3 times)finishing 7th, 5th and 3rd at the State level. His high
school record was 178 wins (81 pins) with only 31 losses. When Adam graduated
in 2004, he had set records in career wins (178) and career takedowns (398). He
had also earned several team awards. Those include: Coaches Choice (2 times); Contribution Award;
and Most Valuable. He also received Academic All-State. Even as a PHS student, Adam coached in
the youth wrestling program and passed on his knowledge and love of the sport to many future PHS
wrestlers. Adam commented on the lessons that he took away from wrestling: Wrestling has taught me
how to overcome obstacles, fight through adversity, and make the most out of every situation. As Dan
Gable said, Once you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy. He also stated, I can honestly say
if it wasnt for all of the amazing coaches I have had along the way, I wouldnt be where I am today.
Wrestling is what pushed me to pursue a college education, brought me to North Central, and inspired
me to teach and coach. Adam feels that one of his most important life lessons that he learned from
PHS athletics came from his football career. Here is how Adam put it, During my junior year, Coach
Novara was faced with a difficult decision that forced him to choose between winning the Homecoming
game or compromising his moral integrity. He chose the latterand it is something that has stuck with
me. I have often referred back to this memory in my own coaching career. Adam was a Salutatorian of
his class (3.9GPA), involved in student council and the National Honor Society. After Graduating from
PHS, Adam attended North Central College (Naperville, IL) on a wrestling scholarship. He continued
his successful wrestling career (133 lbs.) at North Central by becoming a CCIW Conference Champion
2015 inductees
Ryan Fedewa (93) was on the golf team, wrestling team and part of the tennis club
while at Portland High School. Ryan played golf for three years and said there was
nothing extraordinary about his golf game (must be modest). He played on the
Tennis Club team (before tennis became an official sport at PHS). Ryan played
doubles, and was proud of the fact that this tennis club helped to promote the sport in
order to elevate it to an official school sport. It was in wrestling that Ryan excelled.
He has a career record of 93-23-1 (79%). He was a two time ICL Champion; two
time All-Ionia County Team member; and selected three times to the Lansing State
Journal Team. Ryan was a state qualifier as a sophomore; All-state finishing 4th as a
junior; and as a senior he was an All-state 130 lb Class B State Champion. He states that one of his
favorite wrestling memories was eating (over-eating?) with Matt Overweg after weighing in. Ryan still
holds the PHS wrestling record for single season takedowns with 185. After graduating from PHS, Ryan
wrestled for a year at Olivet College. As fellow 2015 inductee, Zac Hunter mentions in his bio, many
former PHS wrestlers are still involved in some facet of wrestling.as coaches, referees, mentors,
parents, etc. This was said to point out the lasting influence PHS wrestling has. Like many former PHS
wrestlers, Ryan has stayed involved in wrestling. He was an assistant coach at PHS for two years, and
remembers that he was on the mat as a coach when Jonah Lyons won the state meet to become a
State Champion. Ryan has also coached for several years in the Portland Youth Wrestling Club. Ryan
brings skill, discipline and enthusiasm to the youth program. It is interesting to watch Ryan deal with
20-30 four to fourteen year olds who are all asking questions at the same time. He manages, teaches,
coaches, and gives life lessons to these young wrestlers, many of whom will become PHS varsity
wrestlers someday. This is how successful wrestling programs start. Ryan is an Estimator and Project
Manager for a commercial company. He and his wife Jennifer (middle school sweethearts) still live in
Portland. They have three children: Kylie (20) who was once a cheerleader for Portland Junior Raiders;
Zac (14) who was a successful wrestler in the youth program, and is currently a freshman football player
and going to wrestle; and Ally (12) who is a cheerleader for the Junior Raiders. Ryan and Jenny also
have a beautiful one-year old granddaughter.
Zac Hunter (90) grew up in Eagle, and as he put it, is a proud graduate of Portland High
School. He was an excellent student, member of National Honor Society, recipient of
senior math award, top-twenty in class of 90; and an amazing artist, recipient of the
senior art award. While at PHS, Zac played football in the fall, wrestled in the winter, and
club wrestling in the spring. It was in wrestling that Zac left his mark on PHS athletics.
He was a 3-time state qualifier and finished 2nd at 130 lbs in the Class B finals in 1990.
He has a career record of 135-31 (81%). Zac was a 2-time team captain; 2-time team
MVP; 2-time League Champion; and finished first or second in 23 tournaments. He was
selected All-Ionia County, and was a member of the Lansing State Journal Dream Team
in wrestling. Some of his favorite memories from wrestling involved beating Lakewood
(ranked 8th) to advance to the regional finals before losing to perennial powerhouse
Lowell; and hamming around with his teammates. He also felt that he learned some responsibility from
wrestling...as the only two-year (and best - his words) manager while in middle school...he learned what
happens when you forget the med-kit! Zac also feels that he developed leadership skills by twice being
varsity captain. He stated that Portlands coaches and athletic traditions had a huge influence on him,
and his teammates. Zac points to the fact that many of his teammates (as he is) are still involved with
wrestling in some facet.as coaches, referees, mentors, parents, etc., as evidence of that influence.
He continued his wrestling career at the University of Pennsylvania from where he graduated (1994)
with a BA in History with a minor in Art History. Zac earned his MS in Education in 1996 at Penn. He
taught for a while in Pennsylvania, and then returned to Michigan, where he taught in Dewitt and
Stockbridge before he took a job teaching history and art at Portland High School in 2000. Zac has
been involved in coaching wrestling since his return to Michigan, as a club coach in Dewitt, an assistant
coach in Stockbridge and as the PHS head coach from 2000-2004. His 2001 PHS team was a
co-champion of the Ingham County League; he coached 8 All-State wrestlers, (3 finalists). Zac is very
proud of his 3-time All-State wrestler, Adam Johnson, who went on to wrestle in college and become a
3-time Division III All-American. Zac was married in 2004; he and his wife Tara moved to their house in
Chelsea, Mi, but Zac has continued to teach at PHS. He is in his 9th year as a volunteer assistant
wrestling coach at Chelsea High School. He earned his Ed-Specialist Degree from MSU in 2011, and is
working toward an impressive 4th degree (MBA) at Northwood. Zac is still an avid outdoorsman and
artist. Zac and Tara have 3 children: Arianne (10), Mireille (7) and Keaton (5).
