Gritsizereferstothesizeoftheparticlesofabradingmaterialsembeddedinthesandpaper.Several
standardshavebeenestablishedforgritsize.Thesestandardsestablishnotonlytheaveragegritsize,but
alsotheallowablevariationfromtheaverage.ThetwomostcommonaretheUnitedStatesCAMI(Coated
AbrasiveManufacturersInstitute,nowpartoftheUnifiedAbrasivesManufacturer'sAssociation)andthe
EuropeanFEPA(FederationofEuropeanProducersofAbrasives)"P"grade.TheFEPAsystemisthesameas
theISO6344standard.OthersystemsusedinsandpaperincludetheJapaneseIndustrialStandards
Committee(JIS),themicrongrade(generallyusedforveryfinegrits).The"ought"system({0,00,000,...}aka
{1/0,2/0,3/0,...})wasusedinthepastintheUS.Cheapersandpaperssometimesusenomenclaturesuchas
"Coarse","Medium"and"Fine",butitisuncleartowhatstandardsthesenamesrefer.
