SDPS 2015 & Convergence
SDPS Focus:
Knowledge Integration
Highly connected, complex systems are designed from the vast
disciplinary knowledge of our time. However, engineers are
challenged by current methods to design and integrate these
systems. A new and fundamental integrative science is needed to
open whole new areas of innovation, make new designs possible,
and allow new technologies to emerge. SDPS believes that the
best approach to achieving this level of integration is through a
fundamental Process Science.

Just as AI (Artificial Intelligence) was a keystone in the advance

of new technologies in the later part of the 20th century, so will
KI (Knowledge Integration) become a keystone to advancing
the technologies for the 21st century. The divided knowledge
of the disciplines has significantly impacted our design choices.
Consequently we tend to produce separate products and services
that align with those disciplines. As software becomes an integral
part of most products and services, a scientific approach to
knowledge integration can be seen as an essential element in
expanding our options and to yield solutions not possible today.
At this conference we explore this idea through Convergence.

What is Convergence?
The National Research Council in their 2014 report states:
Convergence is an approach to problem solving that cuts across
disciplinary boundaries. It integrates knowledge, tools, and ways
of thinking from life and health sciences, physical, mathematical,
and computational sciences, engineering disciplines, and beyond
to form a comprehensive synthetic framework for tackling scientific
and societal challenges... To unleash this new era of innovation,
convergence must include a fundamental science powerful enough
to join the knowledge held within the disciplines, otherwise the
results may be superficial. History has shown new predictive
sciences result in vast new businesses set within industries as yet
unimagined. They reveal new solutions to the complex problems
that challenge both technological and social development, allowing
a broader, more sustainable vision. For 20 years, this fundamental
synthesis has been our focus. You are invited to become a part it.

VENUE & TRAVEL

VENUE: For this Special 20th Anniversary Conference, we return to Dallas where the early ideas and development
of SDPS began. The Hyatt Regency is an iconic part of the new and revitalized downtown area. The Hyatt Regency
stands in the heart of the historic district, just minutes from entertainment areas, museums, concert halls, sports
arenas and major shopping centers. In 2013, it underwent over $30M in renovations. A DART (Dallas Area Rapid
Transit) rail station is just steps from the hotel lobby. The hotels 52 story Hyatt Tower gives a breathtaking, continuous
view of the city. Connected to the hotel is the fully renovated and historic Union Station where the conference will be
held. We look forward to seeing you at this unique event celebrating our history and vision.

TRAVEL: The Dallas/Fort Worth area is home to one

of the largest airports in the world: The Dallas-Fort Worth
International Airport (IATA: DFW). It is served by all major
airlines. The second airport serving Dallas is Love Field
(IATA: DAL) which is within the city limits and northwest
of downtown, but has certain restrictions on flights in and
out. If you are flying internationally or from another state
it is be best to fly into DFW International. Once you arrive
at DFW, you can take a taxi to the Hyatt, rent a car (Hyatt
has a parking garage or you can use Valet parking), use an
Airport Shuttle, or use the light rail system. Please review
this site for more options: http://wikitravel.org/en/Dallas

ATTRACTIONS: Dallas is filled with unique and

exciting attractions. The Hyatt Regency is just 2 blocks
from Dealey Plaza and the Seventh Floor of the Texas Above: The Nasher Sculpture Center Below: The Dallas Arboretum
Schoolbook Depository. This is the number one attraction
in Dallas. You can easily walk there from the lobby.
Experience Pioneer Plaza and the Old Red Courthouse
also just steps from the hotel. The Dallas Arts District is
the largest urban arts district in the country and is home
to many award-winning museums and galleries, including
the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center,
Meyerson Symphony Hall, and Crow Collection of Asian
Art. Dallas is host to excellent attractions such as the Perot
Museum of Nature and Science, the Dallas Arboretum, the
Dallas World Aquarium and the American Airlines Center.
Many stores and shopping areas are close by, including the
The West End Marketplace and Neiman Marcus. Dallas
is a revitalized and vibrant city with many new upscale
communities now located in the downtown area.

...Today, complexity is a word that is much in fashion.
We have learned very well that many of the systems
that we are trying to deal with in our contemporary
science and engineering are very complex
indeed. They are so complex that it is not obvious
that the powerful tricks and procedures that
served us for four centuries or more in the
development of modern science and engineering
will enable us to understand and deal with them.
We are learning that we need a science of complex
systems, and we are beginning to construct it ...
