Instructional Design Model

The cycle learning model is a constructive approach to a learning

model. The center of this model revolves around the learners and

continues in a continuous cycle as the learner progresses. One key

important aspect of this model is the ability to continually build upon

prior knowledge while integrating that prior knowledge into new

material. This model is designed to be used in classroom setting, in

particularly in a hands on learning environment.

It is important when teaching students to understand their level

of understanding before any new material is introduced. The

evaluation of prior knowledge step allows for the instructor to gauge

where the class should start, so proper instructional design can be

appropriately developed.

The objectives phase of the model includes not only the

objectives that must be covered during new instruction but if needed

past objectives that still require mastery. The objectives phase is how

prior knowledge becomes integrated with future knowledge. Without

the objectives phase proper focus on the learners needs becomes lost

and misguided.

The instructional design phase takes into account not only the

actual construction of the ID but the environmental concerns and

actual delivery of the instruction. This step is the most flexible in that

creative instructional design is encouraged to cover a variety of

learning styles. The environment of instruction is a very important

aspect of ID. Knowing where the learning will be located is very

important so proper instruction can support and add to the learning

environment.

The evaluation phase should include student evaluation and

effectiveness of the instructional design. Students need to be

evaluated of their understanding however the instructional designer

see fit and the instruction itself needs to be evaluated on its

effectiveness, creativity, engaging quality and delivery method of

success. Since this model is a cycle the evaluation phase should be

continually revisited.
The feedback phase allows time for students to review over the

learned material after evaluation. This phase is intended to be an

additional learning opportunity for both the learner and instructional

designer. If a concept was not well grasped by the learners then this

step also allows for re-evaluation of the ID and a chance to fix any

deficiencies.

Finally the center of this entire circle revolves around the learner.

All instructional design is intended to help someone learn something

and that is the goal of this ID model.

Objectives of Instructional Unit

This instructional unit is on general shop safety and saw safety.

Students will be expected to safely and successfully use two different

saws in the shop as well as demonstrate proper safety procedures at

all times. The objectives of this lesson include:

Students will

Demonstrate understanding of basic shop safety

Identify parts of a band saw, understand proper use of a band

saw
Identify parts of a scroll saw
Understand proper use of the scroll saw
Comprehend proper safety procedures

Target Audience
The target audience of this instructional design unit is junior high

or high school students in a shop, technology education or agriculture

class. These students will be in an environment that includes a shop

setting and traditional classroom environment. These environmental

aspects were taken into account for the design of the safety

instruction. This lesson will cover 4 hours over a course of four days

and provides learning opportunities for the visual, auditory, and

kinesthetic learners.

Model Integration

The integration of my model began at the evaluation of prior

knowledge stage. I wanted to ensure that the instructor of the lesson

was provided a way to measure the knowledge level regarding shop

safety. I provided a pre assessment to gauge the level of

understanding and to use later in the delivery and continued creation

of instruction. This information will be used to determine the depth in

which the instruction should occur. If the students have a good overall

understanding of general shop safety then starting possibly a review of

the material would be sufficient and more time could be dedicated

leaning other equipment. For the sake of this project an assumption

was made that students will need to start at the beginning of general

shop safety.

I determined the purpose of this course by breaking it down into

manageable objectives. These objectives were also influenced by the

information acquired in the previous step. The objectives will be used

to guide the rest of the instructional design. Time was set-aside in the

instruction to review any information leading up the implementation of

new material.

The next step I utilized in the project was instructional design

step in my model. This step contains a lot of the actual creation of the

instructional design. The information discovered from the previous two

steps was integrated into this step. Also, I knew that for this lesson

several considerations needed to be made regarding the environment.

Two different locations will be used for the actual instruction and the

method of instructionally delivery varies. This was taken into account

when designing the lesson. Students will be provided with updated

copies of shop safety procedures, discussion and question time, videos,

lecture, hands on experience and posted safety guidelines at every

machine. Additionally the pre and post-test will also be used in

continue learning of the material and a required passing score of 80%.

When the students are allowed to work independently in the shop for

the creation of projects these safety rules will also continually be

revisited.

I mentioned in the previous step that students would be

evaluated in several different ways. They will be required to pass a

safety test with an 80% or better and properly demonstrate how to

safely interact in the shop. In addition to evaluating the students

overall evaluation of the instruction is to occur. This will be done by

observation of the students and their interaction with the machinery. If

the majority of students are having trouble changing a saw blade then

in the future more time will be dedicated to the overview of parts.

The final stop on the cycle model before revisiting the beginning

is the feedback stage. For this stage in my instructional design time

was specifically set aside for the review and discussion of the tests.

This was done as away to help those who might be struggling and

reinforcement for those students who did well. Also, time is provided

for an additional shot at passing the test. Since the nature of this is

potentially dangerous, adequate time must be reserved for review,

demonstration and performance feedback.

The center of my instructional design model is the learner.

During the creation of this project I tried to continually make sure that

whatever I outlined in the ID would be the most possible help for the

student. Time was spent creating guides, tests, posted safety rules and

videos, arranged in a way that would be as beneficial to the student as

possible.
