Message Switching

In this module, you will learn how to create and modify teletype messages and send them to a teletype
address. The system will retain all addresses sent to your printer.
Teletype addresses vary and are composed of seven characters. Here is an example of what a teletype
address.

ALLTRBW

TR Office/location designators

BW Carrier code

each address with a space.

Sending Messages with Priority Code

You can also send a teletype message with a priority code.

Note If a carrier elects not to use a priority code in the teletype address field, both ARINC and
SITA will assign either a QP or QK priority code.

YQUALLTRBW

Item Description

Y Primary action code

ALLTRBW The TO teletype address

Valid Priority Codes

Item Description

QD All Other Messages with a normal priority; the message is received within hours, but no later than
the next day. QD messages have the lowest cost and are the base of all other message costs.
For example, your carrier can send FLIFO messages to downline stations. These messages would
have a QD priority.

QK Messages with a normal priority. Message is received within 10 minutes. QK messages cost twice
as much as the QD rate.

QP Messages with a normal priority. Message is received within 10 minutes. QP messages cost twice
as much as the QD rate. Some carriers use QP for AVS messages, PNL messages, and Name
messages with an itinerary segment. If the flight departs within the next three days, you can send a
message with a QP code.

QU Messages with an urgent priority. Message is received within a few minutes. QU messages cost
four times the QD rate.

QX Messages with an urgent priority. The message is received within a few minutes. These messages
are for operation traffic such as aircraft incidents or accidents.

QS Messages with an urgent priority. The message is received within a few minutes. These messages
are regarding safety aboard the aircraft and/or human life. Only authorized personnel may use the
QS priority code.

Message Text

You can write a brief message by using codes and common abbreviations. When you send interline
messages, you should use codes and abbreviations that are industry standard. Remember, readers
need to easily recognize an abbreviation as a word or phrase. When typing a line of text, select the
Enter key at the end of each line.
Note A line of data can be 69 characters long, but no longer.
Note Messages can have the following special characters: (/) slash, (.) period, (-) hyphen, and (*)
asterisk. You need to spell out all other special characters (comma, colon, dollar).

Here is an example of message text:

YATTN ALL AIRPORT SUPVRS <Enter>
YPLZ BE AWARE OF POS EMBARGO <Enter>
YFOR SPACE AVAIL TRAVEL FROM <Enter>
YJULY 13-20. <Enter>

You can also type multiple lines at one time (10 is the maximum). Before using the carriage return
option, select the Home key or place the cursor at the top of the screen. Select the carriage return
(Shift+Enter) at the end of each line. You must then select the Enter key at the end of the message. If
the message scrolls, the lines at the top of the screen will be deleted from the message.

retransmit more than one message. You can retransmit a maximum of 50 messages per entry.
Only the sender can retransmit a message. You must advise the sender to retransmit the message and
specify the number or the number range. When retransmitting one message, include the message
