built the Austro-Hungarian Empire into a formidable world power and at
the time were the most dominant force in Europe. Such wealth led to a

remain the main attraction for most visitors, Austria’s cities reward
exploration. Vienna, the capital, as the seat of the Habsburgs, is built on
a suitably imperial scale - there are palaces, art collections, museums
and splendid 19th century architecture lining broad tree-shaded avenues.
Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, is an intoxicatingly Baroque city whose
skyline is punctuated with countless ornate spires, domes, belfries and
turrets. Further west, Innsbruck, situated in the valley of the River Inn at
the intersection of several Alpine passes, harbours a precious collection
of mediaeval buildings where the upper storeys of the houses almost
meet above the narrow streets.

Friendly people complement the spectacular scenery, excellent food, well-

developed resorts and high standards of services and facilities. Wherever
you stay you will experience ‘Gemütlichkeit’, an Austrian term meaning a
combination of hospitality, contentment and cosiness.

Salzburg

Salzburg
The stage of the world

Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, is a picturesque city straddling the

Mirabell Gardens
Salzach River and sheltered by surrounding mountains. The cultural
capital of Austria, Salzburg is set amidst natural beauty and combines
the charm of a smaller city with the extravagance of a cosmopolitan
centre. The old town is a Baroque masterpiece and everywhere glorious
churches and splendid palaces and mansions reflect the city’s
distinguished history. Salzburg literally means “salt fortress” – Salzburg’s
riches were based on the revenues from the nearby salt mines. These
riches were the foundation for the city’s glorious architecture, which is
why Salzburg has often been called “the Rome of North” for its
outstanding beauty.

All sights are within walking distance from the spacious old city (Altstadt).
A few miles to the south of the city are the historic towns of Hallein and
Werfen and to the west are the lakes of Salzberger, which are especially
worth visiting during the spring and summer when the wild flowers are
out.

Places of interest: Old Town, Bishops’ residence, Getreidegasse with

its wrought iron guild signs, Mirabell Castle, Mozart’s birthplace and
beautiful scenic Salzkammergut area.
For the family: Fortress Hohensalzburg overlooking the city, Museum of
Natural History, Helbrunn Palace and zoo and Werfen Ice Caves (largest
ice caves in the world).

Best buys: Old town and Getreidegasse offers the latest fashion, Mozart
souvenirs, confectionery, antiques, jewellery, traditional costumes, rustic
handicrafts and gingerbread. Famous Christmas markets.

Out and about: Concerts, theatre and opera. Many bars, nightclubs,
restaurants and coffee houses in the Old Town. Venues range from
