Where you can enter the actual date in your desired order, i. e. either Day/Month/Year
or Month/Day/Year or Year/Month/Day using a slash (/) or a dot (.) as separation mark
("Separator").
Before you can enter the date, you must select between a slash (/) and a dot (.) for
separation mark in the date.
In the "Date & Time" display, go to the "Date-Format" column and touch there the
field "Change", after which the following display appears:

After which the entered time appears in the time window of the "Date & Time" display.
2.3 SCALE
During excavation work, the progress of the excavating tool comes on display in a con-
tinuous way on a two-part graphic.
The graphic has graduated horizontal lines representing the depth and graduated verti-
cal lines representing sideward deviations.
One part of the graphic indicates deviations made in the X axis and the other indicates
deviations made in the Y axis.
The scale of the graphic is adjustable both in the vertical and the horizontal. To adjust it
to your individual requirements, proceed as follows.
In the "Adjustments" menu, touch the field "Adjust Scale" and the following display
appears:
skaling
Using the two uppermost arrows, set first the required depth (metres) of the excava-
tion. The depth is always negative wherefore the number is preceded by a "-" mark.
Using the respective arrows in the display, then set the desired scale for the presen-
tation ot the sideward deviations (for example from -25 cm to +25 cm).
2.4 GRAB
Some parameters concerning the size of the grab used must be entered into the control
system.
The three parameters required here are the expected distance which the grab will pene-
trate through the soil until the shovels are full ("Depth per cycle"), the size of the open
shovels in the X axis and the size of the shovels in the Y axis.
In the "Adjustments" menu, touch the field "Grab" and the following display appears:
grab
Using the two upper right arrows, set the correct "X" dimension of the open shovels
in the X field.
Using the two lower right arrows, set the correct "Y" dimension of the shovels in the
Y field.
Using the two left arrows, set the expected "Depth per cycle".
You will find your entered Depth-per-cycle value indicated by a bar in the right scale on
the operating screen.
2.5 DEPTH
The registration of the depth of the grab is dependent on several parameters which
must be adjusted in order that the control be absolutely correct.
In the "Adjustments" menu, touch the field "Adjust Depth" and the following display
appears:
depth1
Which is a sub-menu with which you can proceed as described in the following.
B-Tronic / 2006 2 - 10
ADJUSTMENTS
The depth value indicated by the control system must correspond with the actual depth
made by the grab, wherefore the following adjustment is necessary.
In the "Adjust Depth" sub-menu (see the foregoing page), touch the field "Calibration
Value" and the following display appears:
depth2
Where a value equivalent with the difference between the actual depth and the indi-
cated depth must be entered.
Actual depth
In other words: "Calibration value" =
Indicated depth
Fit the end of a measuring tape to the lower end of the grab, and lower the grab
down the trench by for example 10 metres as read-off on the tape.
Using the arrows in the display, enter your correct value of calibration.
Entering a value of 1.002 would in this case make the depth indication change to 10 m,
which is correct.
B-Tronic / 2006 2 - 11
ADJUSTMENTS
The big black dot to the right of the grab in the display represents the grab when it is
still. As soon as the grab is moved to the side, the dot will change into a direction indi-
cating arrow.
Check that the directions displayed correspond with the actual movements of the
grab.
If the directions are in order, the respective incremental transducers are correctly con-
nected.
B-Tronic / 2006 2 - 12
ADJUSTMENTS
For correct depth measuring, the control system must have been fed with some pa-
rameters concerning the items involved in the measuring. Depending on your type of
equipment, the measuring takes place either on the storage reel for the electric cable to
the grab OR on the grab hoist winch. They are both called "Drum" in this context,
whereas the cable or rope is called "Line". Check or readjust as follows until the values
of all the parameters apply to your equipment.
In the "Adjust Depth" sub-menu, touch the field "Basic Settings" and the following
display appears:
depth3-1
B-Tronic / 2006 2 - 13
ADJUSTMENTS
The next step in the adjustment of the depth is to enter the actual number of cable lay-
ers on your cable reel (or rope layers on your hoist winch, depending on your equip-
ment).
In the sub-menu "Adjust Depth", touch the field "Layers on Drum" and the following
display appears:
depth4
Using the two arrows in the display, enter the actual number of cable (or rope) layers
on the drum involved in the measuring.
In the "Adjust Depth" sub-menu, touch "Quit" and the "Adjustments" menu will reap-
pear.
B-Tronic / 2006 2 - 14
ADJUSTMENTS
2.6 INCLINATION
The inclinations measuring system is factory adjusted and does normally not have to be
readjusted by the user.
Should there, however, come a major inclination and deviation on display when the
control system is switched on, a readjustment is required. If so, begin as follows.
In the "Adjustments" menu, touch the field "Adjust Inclination" and the following dis-
play appears:
inclinat
Where you find a cross of the two axes to the left in the display; the square in the cen-
tre of the cross represents the position of the grab.
The arrows to the right in the display enables two calibration values be readjusted.
The lowermost field is for setting the measuring range of the inclinometer.
B-Tronic / 2006 2 - 15
ADJUSTMENTS
BTS0180F001.wmf
Inclination is the angle of the grab in relation to the vertical line; the measurement used
is degrees (0.00).
Deviation is the distance of the grab from the respective axis; the measurement used is
centimetres (0.00 cm).
Let the grab hang still and freely suspended to the hoist rope.
Using a measuring instrument ( a theodolite) ensure that the grab is vertical.
Using the upper arrows in the "Adjust Inclination" display, readjust the calibration
value for the X axis until the corresponding window to the left in the display indicates
0.00.
Using the middle arrows in the display, readjust the calibration value for the Y axis
until the corresponding window to the left in the display indicates 0.00.
Know the operating range of the inclinometer (it is specified on its nameplate) and
enter it, by means of the two lowermost arrows in the display, into the field indicating
the measuring range of the inclinometer.
Touch "Cancel" if your entered values are to be ignored or if you want to change
them.
Or, touch "OK" to confirm the settings.

OPERATING SCREEN
4 OPERATING SCREEN
This is the display which gives the operator information on the excavation progress. It
comes on whenever the control system is switched on and can also be selected in the
"Main Menu".
operate1
To the left:
A graph with horizontal lines representing depth and vertical lines representing devia-
tions in both the X and the Y axis, and two windows indicating the respective deviations
in centimetres.
The scale to the left is preset by the user and comprizes the entire depth of the trench.
In the centre:
Two columns each of which has a movable bar showing the grab's current depth in re-
lation to the entire depth (left) and in relation to the grab's "Depth-per-cycle" distance
(right) preset by the user.
A YELLOW arrow (here grey) with which the RED arrow can be reset to zero.
To the right
Two figures of the grab illustrating its inclination in the X and the Y axis, and two win-
dows indicating the respective inclinations in degrees.
On the bottom
"Measuring" In the Excavation mode, this word appears here in this field
whenever the grab is outside the trench. It offers a measuring
tour with the grab be started; touching the word makes it
change into "Set point" (see next).
"Set point" This word indicates that the Measuring mode is on. Touching
the word makes the control system register the current posi-
tion of the grab in order that bearing points for a graph of the
cut be collected.
"Reset" Touching this word makes the depth indication reset to zero.
"Print" Touching this word makes a graphic log of the latest collected
bearing points be printed out.
"Menu" Touching this word takes you to the Main Menu of the sys-
tem.
"Stop" Touching this word stops the Measuring mode and brings you
back into the Excavation mode.
CHAPTER 5
PRINT-MENU
5 PRINT-MENU
All bearing points taken in the Measuring mode are memorized and free to print out
whenever desired.
For example, after having completed a measuring tour (see Chapter 8) you may imme-
diately print out a log corresponding with the graph shown on the Operating Screen. Or,
you can print out a log of a cut produced some time ago. In either case, the procedure
is as follows.
In the "Main Menu", touch the field "Print-Menu" and the following display appears:
printmnu
Touch the field "Print", and a log (see next page) is made.
Or, touch "cancel" to undo your selection, and you will return to the Main Menu.
CHAPTER 6
FILE OPERATIONS
6 FILE OPERATIONS
Memorized data which are no more of use may be deleted from time to time.
There is also the possibility to copy memorized data to an external recording medium or
to export them in a format readable by another program.
Either you want to "delete, "copy" or "export", the data concerned must be selected in
the following manner.
To select:
In the "Main Menu", touch the field "File Operations" and the following display ap-
pears:
panel1
From where you still can return to the Main Menu by touching "Cancel", if you do not
want to proceed any further. Otherwise, go on as follows.
Using the two arrows, go to the "Panel No." of the desired cut(s), and mark them by
a slight touch on the number.
Or, touch the field "Select all Panels" and all the cuts that are stored will be marked.
panel2
Touch the field "Undo selection" if you want that your selection be ignored or if you
want to change it.
At this point you can still cancel the whole procedure and return to the Main Menu by
touching the field "Cancel". Or, you can delete, copy or export the selected data in the
manners described in the following.
To delete:
If you want to delete the data you have selected, touch the field "Delete".
However, before the selected data are actually deleted you will get the following ques-
tion:
delete
Touch "YES", if you are sure that the data of the selected cuts are not required any
more, after which they will be deleted.
Or, touch "NO" if you do not want them be deleted after all. After which you may se-
lect new cuts or undo the whole procedure by touching "Cancel".
To copy:
This possibility lets you copy data onto an external recording medium (e.g. a PCMCIA
card) in a compact format, enabling you to treat them later on.
Proceed as follows.
Turn on the grab control system and wait until the program is running.
Then, insert your external recording medium (PCMCIA card) into the drive or card
slot on the GCS computer (found in the electronic box in the control cabinet).
On the monitor, go from the "Main Menu" via "File Operations" into the "Select Pan-
els" display and select there, in the already described manner, the desired data.
Still in the "Select Panels" display, touch the field "Copy", and the selected data will
be copied to the recording medium.
If you have followed the instructions, you will now return to the Main Menu. Or, the fol-
lowing display will appear:
error
If so, check that the card or similar is corrrectly inserted in the drive.
Or, touch the field "Cancel" if you want to cancel the procedure.
After successful transmittance of data (the Operating Screen is back), the PCMCIA will
be removed from the B-Tronic and brought to a PC or laptop.

To export:
This possibility lets you transfer data onto an external recording medium (e.g. a
PCMCIA card) in a readable format (ASCII), enabling you to treat them later in another
program.
Proceed in exactly the same way as described in To copy (see the foregoing page), but
touch the field "Export" instead of the field "Copy".
When you use "Copy" or "Export", the selected data will NOT be de-
leted from the storage of the grab control system.
NOTE
Deletion of data can be executed exclusively by the "Delete" com-
mand.

MEASURING
8 MEASURING
Although depths and deviations come continuously on display during the excavation
operations, it is recommended to carry out a thorough measuring of the excavation in
regular intervals. This should be done in 3 to 4 steps for each cut, like in the following
example.
1st to -7.50 m
2nd to -15.00 m
3rd to -22.50 m
4th to -30.00 m
In each step, bearing points will be taken for example 5 times = every 1.50 m in this
case:
1st at -1.50 m
2nd at -3.00 m
3rd at -4.50 m
4th at -6.00 m
5th at -7.50 m
operate1
The measuring of the 1st step down to -7.50 m is described in the following.
Touch the field "Measuring" so that the word changes into "Set point" which indicates
that a Measuring mode is on.
Now, in the Measuring mode, insert the grab in the trench. In this mode, the move-
ments of the grab are not shown in the graph:
mess1
After which the direction of the excavated cut down to -1.50 m appears in the graph:
mess2
After which the direction of the excavated cut down to -3.00 m appears in the graph:
mess3
After which the direction of the cut down to -4.50 m appears in the graph:
mess4
mess5
Let the grab down to -7.50 m (= the end of the 1st step).
mess6
Touch the field "Stop" and you will get out of the Measuring mode.
The measured data are stored and the fields "Stop" and "Set point" disappear from
the screen.
Touch the field "Print", and a log of the measured step will be printed out.
