5 CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE (TROUBLESHOOTING)
Troubleshooting involves the detection, location and correction of failures in the equipment and the
replacement of the defective parts.
The troubleshooting procedure is carried out with the help of some flowcharts and tables, reported
hereinafter. Anyway this method does not deal with the following aspects (which are to be deduced in other
ways):
Usually maintenance is firstly done via software (TMN or Remote Craft Terminal) to locate the faulty
equipment and the faulty unit or the faulty path and then on site to physically solve the trouble.
ED 01 SC.4:NE MAINTENANCE
3AL 81947 BA AA 13 / 50

on site:
the operator is on site in case:
Units Alarms
Each port card or access card of the equipment is provided with a bicolor LED (green/red) or multicolor
LED (green/red/yellow) at the bottom of the front coverplate.
when red, internal failure (indicates that the unit concerned must be replaced)
when green, in service unit
when red, internal failure (indicates that the unit concerned must be replaced)
when green, in service unit
when yellow, means that the unit is part of an EPS schema and its status is standby
All the alarms detected on the units are collected by the EQUICO unit which will deliver centralized optical
indications (by means of LEDs on its front coverplate). Specifically, from the top to the bottom:
The analysis of these LEDs permits to detect the alarm type (Urgent Not Urgent Indication) and
relevant condition (Abnormal condition, Attended).
In case of URGENT or NOT URGENT alarm, after having located the alarmed equipment, the alarm
condition can be attended by pressing the relevant alarm storing push button on the EQUICO unit.
On the rack

50
On the front coverplate:
If both LEDs are on, the Attend command should be given twice : one for attending the NOT
URGENT (MINOR) alarm and one for attending the URGENT (MAJOR and CRITICAL) alarm.
The troubleshooting operation proceeds according to the information indicated in the flowcharts:
As indicated in the flowcharts the troubleshooting operation is done by means of the Craft Terminal, and
of the optical indicators (LEDs) present on the NE.
The Craft Terminal is cordconnected to the relative connector on the EQUICO unit front coverplate (F
interface).
The Craft Terminal applications provide detailed information on the alarm state thus facilitating fault
location and subsequent removal as indicated in para. 5.4 on page 18.
To correctly execute the troubleshooting operations the technician must know the exact
equipment configuration (see Equipment Configuration applications on the Craft Terminal).
The aim of the flowcharts which follow and of the maintenance tables is to locate the faulty unit and to
replace it with a spare as well as to locate a failure along the link.
The flowcharts/tables should be also consulted when the unit LEDs flash, because the flashing condition
might be due to external alarm causes usually related to line problems.

5.4 Troubleshooting by means of the CT
The troubleshoot proceeds checking the detailed information on the NE alarm by means of the craft
terminal.
The troubleshoot procedure with the the Craft Terminal consists of the following steps:
a) The alarms/status view organization for the equipment is shown in Figure 4. on page 20. Observe
the active alarms on the Severity Alarm Synthesis, Domain Alarm Synthesis and Management
States Control Panel always present on the window (it resumes all the NE alarms).
The alarms presence is indicated by the change of colors (and/or shape: rectangular= not alarmed,
circular= alarmed) of the icons representing the alarms.
Table 2. on page 21 describes the meaning of these alarms/statuses and the relevant maintenance
actions.
b) In case of alarm presence, access the Alarm Surveillance to troubleshoot. This application gives
the details of the detected alarms and helps for their localization.
Para. 5.4.4 on page 23 describes this view.
c) It is possible to analyze the detailed alarm presence on the TPs of each ports of the NE, following
the indication of para. 5.4.5 on page 27.
d) It is also possible to check alarm and status at Board view, Subrack view and Equipment view
following respectively the indication of para. 5.4.6 on page 31, para. 5.4.7 on page 34 and para.
5.4.8 on page 35.
e) Eventual housekeeping alarms can be localized following the indications given in para. 5.4.10 on
page 37.
f) These above said paragraphs describe general aspect of alarms meaning and relevant maintenance
actions that can be done with the information given in the applications.
g) The history of past events can be obtained by means of the Log Browsing option of the Diagnosis
pull down menu (see NE management section of this Handbook).
In case of unit replacement, follow the indications reported in chapter 7 on page 41.
The Automatic Laser Shutdown (ALS) is used to protect the operator who is working with the optical fiber.
When the ALS is active, it may be difficult to detect the link failed.
To locate it, it is necessary to force on the ALS, thus enabling the optical power transmission on the
opposite direction of the failed link.
WARNING: During this phase the operator has to pay attention when working with fibers and connectors.
1AA 00014 0004 (9007) A4 ALICE 04.10
The ABNORMAL indication inform the operator of the ALS forced condition.
After having completed the maintenance, enable the ALS.
The ALS states are indicated in the port view, as described in para. 5.4.5 on page 27.

The various units specified in the synchronous multiplexing hierarchy imply structuring the Transmission
network into three levels (sublevels of the physical OSI level):
Transmission bearer level. It is the support for the path level and can be further split into physical
level (Transmission media) and Transmission section level. The sections can be either regenerator
or multiplexer and utilized for specific functions associated to the EOW channels of the SDH frame.
The interface alarms (or section alarms, indicated in the tables) belong to this level (example: Line
LOS, LOS, B2, etc.).
Path level. It concerns the data transfer between the access points and the path. It does not depend
on the service nor on the type of Transmission media. It constitutes the circuit level support. The path
can be either lower order (LO) or higher order (HO) depending on the capacity of data transferring.
Like the regenerator and multiplexer sections, the paths too have specific functions associated to the
EOW channels of the SDH frame. The alarms listed in the cited tables, where path level
troubleshooting is required, belong to this level (example:TU AIS, TU LOP).
Circuit level. This level concerns the transfer of information between the access points and the
circuit proper. It is a direct support for the telecommunication services. It superimposes the SDH
function and is considered as the transport agent hence no SDH orderwire channel associated
functions are required. An example of this level alarm is Tributary LOS.
The above level structuring in the Transmission Network is depicted in Figure 3. on page 19.

The alarm and status indications depend on the unit type; for example SDH units is organized on two levels
of presentation (in the first is selected one of the available ports) and each view contains dedicated
indications.
An alarm box is displayed on each port, to indicate whether the port is alarmed.
An indication in the message/status area provides information about the board Administrative State:
inservice or outofservice.
The alarms of the board are reported at the bottom of the message/status area, by means of various
boxes containing relevant acronyms.
The nonalarmed condition of an alarm icon is represented by a green color.
The alarmed condition is represented by the color of its severity (as assigned by the ASAP).
A message under the mouse indicator provides the name of the alarm or object on which it is located, in
this way facilitating the identification of the alarm or status or object.
The alarms which can be found in the Board view are listed in Table 6. on page 25, where the relevant
maintenance actions are reported too.
IMPORTANT: when the BTERM unit is not present in the subrack is displayed the RUM alarm on
both HCMATRIX units (BTERM unit is not managed by the CT).
In case of board with multi access points (i.e. containing subboards) another view permits to select the
contained port, named daughter or subboard (see example of Figure 11. on page 33).
An example of daughter (subboard) view with the presented ports is in Figure 12. on page 33. It is

The alarms and status indications at subrack level can be obtained, following the indications given on the
NE Management section of this handbook.
An alarm box is displayed on each board, to indicate whether the board is alarmed. This board alarm
summarization is activated when one of the board alarms (those reported at the bottom of the Board view)
is active.
A lock symbol on a board indicates that it is inservice. Else, the lack of this symbol indicates its
outofservice state (Administrative State information).
A message under the mouse indicator provides the name of the alarm or object on which it is located, in
this way facilitating the identification of the alarm or status or object.

The HCMATRIX replacement procedure uses the EPS facilities of the matrix boards (HCMATRIX) that are
listed below:
the Protected HCMATRIX takes place in slot 22 and the Protecting HCMATRIX in slot 41;
the HCMATRIX protection is automatically created and presented in the left side of the Dialog
Box when the Spare HCMATRIX is created in the Set option of the Equipment menu; it is not
created with the EPS menu;
EPS switch can be induced by Automatic way (in case of hardware failure), or instigated by user
(by way of software commands);
on the Equipment view, by doubleclicking on one of the HCMATRIX board, it is clearly indicated
if the board is Active or StandBy; this indication is also reported on the front panel of the board:
if the LED is Green the board is Active, whereas an Orange LED means that the board is
standby;
only Manual Switch command is available and Manual Switch command is executed only if the
standby board is not in failure;
after a Switching command, it is NECESSARY to release it, in order to be able to switch back.

6.2 HCMATRIX Replacement
If the HCMATRIX board to be replaced is the Active board, follow these steps:
2) Perform a Manual Switch onto the StandBy HCMATRIX, via the menu EPS > Switch.
The traffic might be impacted during this switch.
4) Check on the Equipment view that the HCMATRIX to be replaced is in StandBy condition, and
that the other HCMATRIX board is Active.
5) Remove the HCMATRIX board to be replaced. Check the appearance of the RUM alarm (that
must be Minor).
7) Perform the Manual Switch back if necessary via the EPS > Switch menu.
If the board to be replaced is the Standby board, the above procedure has to be applied starting on the

7.1 P16OS1 and A12OS1 units replacement
B) perform the boards configuration operations from the CT for both the boards and the STM1
modules as for all the similar boards.
If the sequence indicated at point A) is not met, fictitions alarms can be cleared by removing and
inserting again the A12OS1 board.
Various procedures are utilized to replace a EQUICO faulty unit. They depend on the type of spares
available:
Spares with installed software, belonging to the same type of equipment and with SW release
identical to the unit to replace.
Spares with installed software, belonging to the same type of equipment but with SW release
differing from the one of the unit to replace, or belonging to other types of equipment or
unknown.
The flowchart of Figure 16. on page 43 illustrates the procedures to follow for the EQUICO substitution.
The procedure aim is to replace the faulty unit without causing configuration changes and/or unwanted
faults; when not possible this is indicated in the flow chart.

7.3 Handling/cleaning of MT connectors/PAROLI modules mounted on HCLINK
The present procedure lists the precautions, the handling and the cleaning of PAROLI modules (and
related parts such as MT connectors and dust caps) during system installation/commissioning or
PAROLI modules and MT connectors are typical multifibres systems (12 channels) and, comparing to
the monofibre standard case, are more sensitive to cleaning level; this is more and more valid for PAROLI
modules, due to their receptacle configuration that limits the easy access to active optical parts.
In Figure 17. is shown PAROLI module with SMC receptacle and in Figure 18. the relevant female MT
connector used in ribbon multifibre cables.

connectors.
Ferrule Mechanically and optically active part of a connector which, inserted into the adapter, makes
possible the optical interconnection. It always has an endface (optically active) where fibre
is polished; in order to obtain efficient optical transmission, it presents a precise mechanical
alignment structure.
Dust cap Used for the protection (mechanical and from dust) of optical connectors and receptacle
modules.
Receptacle Component/module part used for the direct insertion of an optical connector; practically it
simulates half an adapter.

During PAROLI module and MT connector handling, basic precautions must be observed:
When not interconnected, always protect PAROLI modules and MT connectors by using the
related dust caps; before using the caps, be sure they are cleaned.
For each phase during MT connector cleaning, use a new lintfree cleaningpaper; never
reuse consumable cleaning parts.
Avoid twisting fibre cables while turning end connector or routing the cable during installation.
Do not allow optical connectors to strike or drag across work surfaces or the floor.
Avoid touching endface of optical connectors with anything other than cleaning materials.
When not installed, optical connectors must be protected with related dust caps.
Always clean optical connectors before to insert them into PAROLI modules.
Remove dust cap from PAROLI modules only when an optical connector must be inserted on
it.
Many of the cleaning materials listed below are easily available on the market:
Pin per ferrule MT (Single mode quality, 2 pins mounted onto single pin holder, e.g.
Furukawa PN MPO(K)SPT)
included in the Kit with part number 3AL81681AA; it is used for the cleaning of the precise
alignment holes of MT connectors.

5. Moisten a new lintfree cleaning paper with alcohol. Clean the complete ferrule endface with
low pressure and following a movement normal to the fibre array (see Figure 21. ).
6. Dry, by using a new lintfree cleaning paper, the complete ferrule with low pressure and
8. Immediately insert the cleaned connector into a cleaned PAROLI module or protect the
connector with a cleaned dust cap.
Contaminated dust caps can easily soil cleaned ferrule and receptacles.
When a dust cap is applied, dust should be blown out of the dust cap inner area with air spray.
If necessary, clean PAROLI module by only blow out air spray inside its receptacle.

The 10 Gb/s Filter Preamplifier subunit named OPTF (see Technical Handbook) has to be replaced
when the wavelengths of the connection of a channel between the 1670SM and the 1640WM equipment
requires to be changed.
This substitution will need a new board configuration by CT (it is a new traffic channel).
the 10.6 Gb/s coloured port unit, named L642CF, which has to be replaced with another one
having a different wavelength (see Technical Handbook);
the Preamp. 10 Gb/s unit, named PR64, housing the OPTF subunit that has to be replaced
according to the sequence given in the following.
1) remove the PR64 unit from the 1670SM subrack and take a note of the RX / TX fibers
connections towards the OPTF subunit;
2) disconnect the above cited fibers by carefully unscrewing them from the relevant connectors;
3) unscrew the three screws on the coverplate of the OPTF subunit to remove the latter;
4) extract the new subunit OPTF from the original packing, preserve the labels present and verify
that this OPTF is the one corresponding to the desidered wavelength by checking the labelling
on the subunit side;
5) mount the OPTF subunit and then connect the RX / TX fibers again;
6) replace the previous label associated to the old wavelength (which is attached on the upper
extraction lever of the PR64 unit) with the new one supplied with the packing;
7) hence insert the PR64 unit with the new OPTF subunit into the 1670SM subrack and verify the
new channel functionality.
