CRITICAL UPDATES OF 20TH CENTURY:
While modernism shared social
ideologies with Marxism and shared
Marxist desire

Interfuse with form and word

Its social revolution is easily

understood as analogous to
Modernisms

COLIN ROWE- INTRODUCTION TO THE FIVE ARCHITECTS

THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS IS 2 FOLD:

Firstly,
Colin Rowe presents the clear interpretation of Modernism as having equally
concerned with form and function.

While Modernism professed to be solely concerned with social revolution and

relegated the specic aesthetics of its buildings to purely scientic, functionalist.!!!!!!

For proof Rowe points to Modernisms conicted relationship with history, which
punished the use of precedents or historical references and therefore raised formal
creativity and newness.

A Style Which is Not A Style
In Practice We can recognize a Modern Architecture by its:

White walls

Surfaces

Cubism

The formal breakthroughs that Modernism made because of the extreme premium on discovery or creativity
were bound up and obstructed by its social crusade to bring about a new society, an enlightened population.

Secondly,

The eventual distance between Modernisms Form and Content

(function) led to failure as Modernism became an international Style.

In the late 1950s - 70s , as the Modernisms failure became

pronounced as Social agendas, A variety of Alternatives appeared.

For architecture to move forward, Rowe emphasized on Form rather

than its content.

Then came the New york 5

John Hejduk
The Wall House
Represents both
Form and Function
in architecture
unlike any other.

2001
The house is a study of the relationship between
inside and outside but a bit more eccentric.

2001
Wall House 2 is admired for it's fusion of Surrealist sculpture, Cubist
paintings and architecture, which reect John Hejduk's identity as an
artist, poet, educator and architect.
Organized around a central axis of
horizontal and vertical plane, a three-
dimensionality allows for experiencing the
spaces.

Accompanying these, a two-dimensional

plane disconnects but at the same time
groups the functional spaces which
appear separate from one another while
emphasizing the poetic nature of the
residence.
Use of light colors encourages visual distinction between volumes
accessible by means of a spiral staircase that sits at the backside of
the wall.
Dividing the space, the wall appears to be freestanding through the
careful design of Hejduk, as it is supported with a glass connection to
the volumes.
The Kreuzberg Tower
One of the buildings protected by Architectural
organizations to preserve post modern
buildings.

Hejduks project is composed of a 14 story

tower with two separate 5 story wings.

These extrusions serve as balconies and sun

shades for the low income housing units

The neutral colored tower and wings feature

green geometric shapes attached to the
facades.
Proposed refurbishment by the owners had
included changes such as removal of the sun
shades and expanding the balconies.

Instead of the initial changes, a full renovation

is planned for the Kreuzberg Tower, including
the surrounding gardens, which were designed
but never realized.
The 9SG exercise and the Texas House
The initial power and beauty of the nine-square problem was its immateriality, its
existence without function, site, client, body, and, to some extent, scale.

The 9SG Exercise was given to the students as a structural wire-frame and nothing else.In the
design process, students were expected to discover the potency of the 9SG structure and to
investigate spatial congurations within the limitations and possibilities of the structural grid.
Texas house 1 and 2
Designed 7 houses to exercise 9SG.

9GS transforms from a single storey to 2-3 storey.

For each house 9GS is used dierently.

In House 1 and 2 , he expands the 9GS to create extra

spaces.

In house 1 Asymmetrical Program is put into a

symmetrical form

Entrance through the Center square through the verandah

House 1 can be interpreted with central Circulation.

Texas house 1 and 2

House 2 has 2 entrances unlike House 1.

Has 3 bedrooms in the corners.

Services are not within the 9GS.

Texas house 3

House 3 denes a center periphery

relation with an open court in the center.

Column layout reduced,

Simplied.
Texas house 4

Most complete of all.

9SG transforms into 2 storey

Texas house 5

Single space with columns dividing it into sub-spaces

Texas house 6
House 6 is a 3 storey structure

Has separate stair tower

Texas house 7
House 7 is perceived as a 3 story
Structure but it is actually a 6 story
structure.

But at the end it is an unnished

proposal as it is an innite ending
process
